Exh attracts them all, there is the woman who carries a can of mace a weighted stick and talks at length of how she is ready for anyone who might be a threat. That we live in the back of beyond with low crime and can easily not see a single person on a walk if you choose seems a bit OTT. The bloke who advises him on such varied topics as women's gynae procedures, obscure historical and geographical facts and an update of the Brexit situation. The woman who doesn't walk a dog but instead carries a cockatoo.
Funnily enough none of them bother with me at all which I assume is because I have a very intolerant manner.

Squirrel26 · 18/07/2018 15:40

Friend and I went to a local National Trust property with SquirrelDog once, where you’re not allowed to take dogs into the main gardens to get to the cafe (don’t get me started on the NT and it’s dog friendly -ness Angry )

They had a volunteer specially stationed at the gate to tackle all these dreadful people with dogs who wanted a cup of tea. My friend went to the cafe, and I stood there with SquirrelDog, and had to listen to a couple going on and on about how this was an excellent idea, and how dogs were the devil’s work, and basically shouldn’t be allowed anywhere for about 10 minutes. Then they went away, and the volunteer said to me ‘I’m so sorry, I love dogs. I’ve got a dog. They just wouldn’t go away.’

Why would you make a point of going over to harangue someone about something that isn’t happening to you (they remained un-savaged by any dogs, remarkably,) and not give a shit about the fact that you’re almost certainly going to piss off a total stranger who’s just following the rules and minding their own business? People are incomprehensible. I imagine them spending their lives stalking round places BEING OFFENDED. Grin

Soubriquet · 18/07/2018 19:25

Bloody Dh has broken the dog lead. Angry

No spare in the house either. Going to have to go out tomorrow and get a new one. She will be pissed off im leaving her behind on the school run though

Wolfiefan · 18/07/2018 19:30

Bugger. You're not near Glos are you? I have a lead or six spare. Blush

TropicPlunder · 18/07/2018 19:31

This is why it's SO important to have a beautiful collection of dog leads Grin I now feel justified.

Avocados, I think having a dog puts you at the same risk of unsolicited advice as having a new baby in public. Suddenly you are public property and some folks love to do a bit of educating (whether you want it or agree with it or not!)

Soubriquet · 18/07/2018 19:33

No not near glos but thanks Grin

Hmmm I think I'm going to have to start a collection of leads and harnesses just in case

BiteyShark · 18/07/2018 19:44

Soubriquet how have you only managed to buy just one lead? What is the magic self willpower you possess I have to binge buy leads and collars even though you can only ever use one at a time Grin

OP posts:
Soubriquet · 18/07/2018 19:46

I tend to buy the expensive stuff...lead was £20 and the harness was £34. Therefore I tell myself I can't buy more.

However the julius K9 harness keeps calling to me....

Hi, I'm posting here because I have no idea how to start a new thread, numpty that I am. Anyway, we have a six (aporox) year old staffie rescuse, we've had her for just over four months. We've had staffies before and we are experienced dog owners. That's the background. She is an absolute delight, so loving and gentle. No problem with toiletting and no destructive behavior. She's had her acl done while we were fostering her, 13 weeks ago. All seems well there.
We have one issue with her, that I think we are slowly overcoming, but which totally baffles me. When she knows it's walk time, she gets v v exited. Than runs away from us and has to be coaxed out.
I know that horrid things may have happened to rescue dogs. But what may have caused this? She clearly wants to go for the walk, right up to the time she has to leave our home, then she seems to have a rethink and backs off.

We're dealing with it by calmly putting her lead on and moving her on (sometimes by carrying her a few steps). Once she starts walking, she seems fine, but she does pull a lot on her lead when she realizes we are on our way back.

As I said, she's getting a lot better. When we first got her, she would only walk if two out of the three of us came too, now she will walk with only one of us, once we get her off the drive

Do you think there is anything else we could do, or anything we could do differently to help her enjoy her walks?

Oh, and we have tried her favourite treats, but like a lot off staffies, she can be very stubborn when the mood takes her

TropicPlunder · 18/07/2018 19:50

Blush TropicHound has a harness, a raggy old lead, an every day collar and lead, 2 'smart' collars of different local craft design and a 'smart' lead. There are others I have my eye on.

BiteyShark · 18/07/2018 19:52

I do find though that the downside of having multiple collars and harnesses is that I can't be arsed to keep transferring name tags so have to get another one cut everything I buy one Grin

Welcome user1471453601. Not sure what else to suggest but maybe someone else will have some ideas.

Do you think walking outside is just a bit overwhelming/scary so whilst she would like to go for a walk she is both excited and scared at the same time?

steppemum · 18/07/2018 20:11

This is why it's SO important to have a beautiful collection of dog leads grin I now feel justified.

That made me laugh out loud!

welcome user!

I wonder if he feels really safe at home, and has panic moment thinking that you are leaving and leaving might mean not coming back.
Steppedog is a rescue, and he loves walks, being out, vsiting my mum etc, but he is always REALLY happy to be home again. Sometimes he lies down and does a really deep sigh, and it is like I can see him visibly relax.
We have to send him to friends while I am on holiday in August and I think he will worry the whole 2 weeks Sad

user1471453601 · 18/07/2018 20:36

Thank you Step and Bitey, you've both articulated what I think. She's some how scared she won't be able to come back, she has a very cushy life here. Nothing less than she deserves.

Thanks for the welcome, I'll get my DD to help me post a photo of our beautiful girl. She really is a beauty too.

Seem like we're doing the right things. We're working on her self esteem. As I daid, she's an absolute beauty. We'd like her to be more self confident for her sake, but we can easily live with her as she is, iyswim

Wolfiefan · 18/07/2018 20:42

I too wonder if she thinks that lead on means she won't be coming home. Maybe put the lead on to go out in the garden for treats and play?
Erm leads.
If DH finds this I will need to name change.
I have a lovely leather slip lead for showing.
2 chunky slip leads of different lengths for when she was a pulling puppy.
A puppy lead that snapped and was made into a slip lead. Oh and another puppy lead.
An extending lead and two long lines I used as a small pup around the cats in the house/garden.
An adult leather lead
An adult posh lead.
A thick lead I bought in a panic after she broke a lead.
A couple (ok three) Ancol everyday leads.
I think I have a problem. Blush
Maybe the problem is not enough dogs?! Grin

BiteyShark · 18/07/2018 20:52

Stands up and says 'my name is BiteyShark and I am a serial lead and collar buyer not even going to start on all the toys and beds I have bought'

2 slip leads
2 double ended leads
2 normal leads
2 extendable leads (never used)
4 collars
3 harnesses including one ezydog and perfect fit

Wolfie fortunately DH is like me when it comes to buying stuff for BiteyDog so he just laughs when another parcel for the dog turns up. He asked me to order some delux biscuits for the dog for our holiday, £6 for a very tiny box Grin

TropicPlunder · 18/07/2018 20:58

Grin thanks lead-enthusiasts! Now I feel better. Glad I'm not the only one with 'smart' leads. I barely have smart clothes!

Good luck user! Hope you manage to upload a photo

Wolfiefan · 18/07/2018 21:04

Hah. Even the dog knows that if a parcel arrives it is likely to be for her.
Soooo hoping to make Crufts next year. Now THAT is a shopping opportunity! Grin
And no. I don't have smart clothes either. Except the lovely jacket I bought. For dog showing. Grin

Madam in her "posh collar"

General Dog Chat Part III
TropicPlunder · 18/07/2018 21:16

Lovely! It suits her, kind of Celtic green.
Here is TropicHound modelling her new masai beaded leather number....needed new one as her neck grew (it really did)

Wolfiefan · 18/07/2018 21:29

Of course it grew. Grin
Oooo. We don't have a beaded one! Grin
It's actually gold and black. But often with muddy undertones. Wink

BiteyShark · 18/07/2018 21:30

Hmmm you are both putting my boring coloured ones to shame off to browse collars

OP posts:
Wolfiefan · 18/07/2018 21:32

Haha.
Other women have designer shoes. Grin

TropicPlunder · 18/07/2018 21:32

Yes, now I see gold. Very regal either way!
