Urgent help please? - vomiting dog.

1 year old lab.

Dosey DH forgot to buy her food, so this morning he popped to the local shop and bought her some cheap crappy Wagg food for breakfast. Fed her at about 8am.

She has also managed to squeeze past the baby gate and eat a bowl of dry cat food. She also has a taste for cat poo.

At about 5pm she threw up what looked like undigested food.

She has since thrown up about 10 times if not more. Now just bile.

She doesn't look sorry for herself, she now just wants us to feed her.

I would rather starve her overnight if I can.

No diarrhoea, just vomit.

Do I need to contact emergency vet?

I have offered her water.

I'd have already called the vet for advice by now tbh. Could she have got out and eaten something suspect?

Sorry to drip feed. But the reason why we haven't called already is that she seems fine in herself. And, she does have a sensitive tummy and is sick maybe once a week.

I think it's the food she had this morning on her sensitive tummy.

I have made some shredded chicken and rice for the morning.

Well, if she seems okay other than the vomiting she probably doesn't need to actually see the vet but if you're worried or unsure what to do, ring the vet. I would in your shoes.

Any emergency vets I've dealt with over the past 30 plus years of pet owning have been more than happy to offer advice over the phone.

I'd be inclined to hold off any food at least till the morning and chuck out the food your DH bought, it clearly doesn't agree with her. Any change in food should be done over a week or so, she's probably just had a reaction to the sudden change.

Is she drinking the water?

I’m sure she’ll be fine. I’d do what you said and starve her overnight and then a small portion of food in the morning.

I am a vet. As you say that she is not unwell in herself, I would just withhold food overnight (not water though) and try a small amount of her usual food in the morning.

How likely is it that she has chewed/swallowed something which could have got stuck in her intestine (e.g. a toy/sock/pebble)? If unlikely then I would just play it by ear tomorrow. If likely, book a vet appointment tomorrow.

Yes she has had some water now.

Is she running a temperature or shaking?

If not I'd probably wait so long as she'd had some water. Last time my pup was like this we gave her watered down milk to get her to drink. Depends on your dog's lactose tolerance though.

I don't think she has eaten anything that could have got stuck. We will keep a close eye on her and if she seems to not be herself I will contact vet ASAP.

Silly question. I know rice is a bit dodgy and can make you ill. Is it OK if I keep it in the fridge?

We don't have any of her normal food, DH forgot yet again! He will get some in the morning. But I suspect she will be whining at the bottom of the stairs from about 5am.

I wouldn't give her milk. She was very sick once after having that squirty cheese stuff in a Kong.

I wouldn't keep rice in the fridge.

I give mine rice when they have a dodgy tummy, but cook it from fresh and discard whatever's not eaten.

Just anything bland tm morning then - plain chicken and rice, or bland scrambled egg. I agree that milk a bad idea with a dicky tummy!

Rice can be safely kept in fridge as long as put in as soon as cooled down. It can contain toxic spores which are not destroyed by cooking, which then grow at room temperature if rice has been cooked (moisture and warmth activates spores) and left out of fridge for hours.

Well she didn't keep the water down.

Partyfops aside from your dog being poorly today, do you not think it would be a good idea to get her looked at anyway by the vet for her regular vomiting? (you said in your second post that she has a sensitive tummy and is sick maybe once a week). It could be something that is relatively easy to treat, like gastritis, or something more serious. Whatever, it must be miserable for her to be nauseous so often.

If she is not keeping water down there is a risk of dehydration.

If she were mine, acting as described and had not kept a reasonable amount of water down by morning, I would be going to the vet tomorrow (first thing tomorrow).

We have seen the vet for the vomiting. They put it down to her eating cat poo. It's really hard to keep her away from it. However, we had 3 cats until about 2 weeks ago, we now have 2. The second one is going back to live with my mum as he isn't a permanent fixture.

We might need to muzzle her in the garden to keep her away from it.

She's not sick at the dog boarding place when we are on holiday as they don't have cats.

I found drinking too much water in one go for a sick dog was making them bring it back up so encouraged small drinks every 15-20 minutes to keep them hydrated.

Yes, I wonder if she drank it all in one and it was too much.

A few sips at a time is better. Of course no lab will ever agree with that.

I have left a small amount of water out for her.

DH on phone to out of hours vets as there was a FB post of a local dog poisoning. But I think they are ruling that out.
