Talking of wildlife, you have to be a stupid squirrel to visit our garden when the patio doors are open. BiteyDog has just had fun chasing him out of the garden (shame he had to chase him through our flower beds Angry)

Yay!!! There's a dog thread!!!

WheelyCote · 25/05/2018 08:58

I have two rescues 9yr olds who lived in shelters for most of their lives. Had them about 3 months now.

Today I'm taking them to the beach, not sure if they've seen the seaside before. I'm excited.

One is great off the lead. The big one will be staying on the long lead.

I have a harness for the big one (she pulls like a trooper) and was told I've been using the harness wrong haha I'm meant to attach the lead to the chest loop, that way if she pulls...she turns herself round. Will be trying thisGrin

BiteyShark · 25/05/2018 09:00

Welcome Wheely, hope you have fun at the beach Grin.

I have a harness with a chest and back loop. I use a double ended lead so I can pull the front one more if he starts to pull. On my harness they say don't just use the chest loop (use both chest and back together) but yours may be different.

OP posts:
Squirrel26 · 25/05/2018 10:37

My harness also says not to just use the chest loop, but I do Blush SquirrelDog is bloody unbearable with even a double ended lead on his back - it brings out his inner Husky.

I check that the stitching is intact every time I use it, and resign myself to replacing the chest piece at regular intervals!

WheelyCote · 25/05/2018 16:04

Ohhhh that makes sense...using both clips.

What lead do you use that had two clips??

I used the front loop st the beach and it made a bigggggg difference but conscious it's not a metal loop and might break

BiteyShark · 25/05/2018 16:50

I have two as I like a back up Grin

I have a halti training lead and a perfect fit double ended lead. A double ended lead does get a bit of time getting used to it but I have mastered using one hand and jerking the front part if he pulls Grin

OP posts:
BiteyShark · 25/05/2018 16:51

I should also say you can use two ordinary leads at the same time but I prefer a double ended one when we are just out walking when I know he will pull at any opportunity to get to the next sniffing place

noitsnotteatimeyet · 25/05/2018 19:35

There are loads around - we’ve got a couple like this and they’ve been fine. Teatimetoller is usually ok with just the back clip but occasionally we’ll use the front clip as well for a bit more control (usually when there’s lots of food within tempting reach ...)

GooodMythicalMorning · 25/05/2018 19:43

Such a trying couple of days here. Indy has got really nippy and keeps getting my feet and randomly my elbows. Thought he'd stop this now he's a year but if anything its getting worse. Sad

BiteyShark · 25/05/2018 19:53

Sorry to hear that Goood. Any pattern to it?

OP posts:
GooodMythicalMorning · 25/05/2018 23:34

Not really. I'm wondering if the heat is making him unsettled and grumpy

WheelyCote · 26/05/2018 06:15

What breed is he Goood?

Double ended lead sourced, thanks!

Anyone any tips on managing moulting? Don't know how they have any hair left hah

BiteyShark · 26/05/2018 06:22

Goood even at a year old I found that they sometimes 'regressed' and pushed boundaries. Firm No's and timeouts were still occasionally being given if I remember correctly.

Looks very thundery for the bank holiday weekend here Sad. Shame as I was hoping to sit outside and relax and watch the bees whilst being pestered to play ball by BiteyDog every 5 mins

OP posts:
BiteyShark · 26/05/2018 06:23

Wheely we get our cocker clipped so don't have a lot of problems with moulting so can't help on that one.

OP posts:
Wolfiefan · 26/05/2018 08:06

We don't have much moulting either as I have to hand strip Wolfie pup.
Hoping we are thunder free. Have to leave her alone for a bit today, I'm volunteering at a shelter tomorrow and we have a show Monday.

BiteyShark · 26/05/2018 08:09

Good luck for the show on Monday.

I have found BiteyDog really doesn't care what is happening around him whilst I have a ball in my hand. Thunder and lightening and he growls in the house but grab a ball and he will happily play outside Hmm

Squirrel26 · 26/05/2018 09:44

SquirrelDog has a bone, to keep him occupied while I get on with household chores drink coffee and dick about on the internet. Except he wants to rest his bone on my foot, while he rolls around on my other foot chewing it. Urrrgh.

BiteyShark · 26/05/2018 10:22

Awww he just wants to share the fun with you Squirrel Grin

OP posts:
GooodMythicalMorning · 26/05/2018 12:19

He's a bulldog.

That's what I'm doing, with putting his Nylabone in his mouth to try to distract him. Got the rolly kong toy that you put treats in too as meant to help but doesn't distract him for long.

bluetongue · 26/05/2018 13:33

Bluepuppy is one and still had ‘off’ days. He has been much better at not jumping up when I come in the front door but was leaping all over the place the other day when I came home and managed to scratch me on the arm. He also pulled on the lead terribly today while on a group walk. Good thing he’s cute Grin

BiteyShark · 26/05/2018 13:55

blue any luck on finding another pal for bluepuppy as I know your were looking a while back.

OP posts:
bluetongue · 26/05/2018 15:04

I’m still keeping an eye out for another whippet Bitey but I’m not in a hurry. I really need to be able to take at least a week off work to settle him / her in and my workplace is short staffed at the moment.

BiteyShark · 27/05/2018 07:03

Well I was going to take BiteyDog out for an early ball play in the countryside which he loves. Got up and fed him thinking we would leave in about an hour. Hmmm think I might have to delay that now as massive thunderstorm just appeared Sad.

The good news is though by playing ball in the garden during that last daytime thunderstorm seems to have solved his nervousness as he just popped his head up to the thunder and then just curled back up to sleep.
