Aww cutie :)

SlothMama · 25/06/2018 20:04

I brought home a 9 week old Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever this weekend! She is such a sweetheart but I think she may be part shark as she loves to bite. We are working on it!

ohheckwhatnow · 25/06/2018 22:22

Jumping in on this one

So our new golden lab puppy is arriving on Sat eeeek!!

We lost our much loved choc lab a few months ago. We got him at 10 months so missed the pup phase with him. After much deliberation we have decided to take the plunge and get a puppy.

Our first puppy in 20 years and I can't remember have blocked out the puppy phase. I am super excited but feeling quite apprehensive too.

I fully expect sleepless nights, pee all over, nippy teeth and lots of time spent training. Looking forward to all the good stuff having a dog brings too Smile

I suppose I am just looking for some moral support really, all I am reading is about the worst bits of puppy ownership, it's not all bad is it?...…………….

newme175 · 26/06/2018 06:41

How exciting! The best things are sleepy puppy snuggles and lovely new puppy smell :) Enjoy your new addition and the hard parts are relatively short, my pup is 5 months now and we are coming out the worst bits, but he still wakes early which I worry that's just how he is and I need to adjust.

PookyHook · 26/06/2018 09:57

It's not all bad ohheck, it's hard work but over quickly, and they're so cute when they're small.

Pookypup ripped my brand new top 30 minutes after I put it on. It was cheap, but still! She's also ripped two pairs of jeans and a cardigan. I can't wait until the sharp puppy teeth fall out.

She has also learned how to go upstairs, so I think we may have to get a stair gate. We've only just recently got to the stage where all our kids are old enough to get rid of stair gates and now we need a puppy gate.

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 26/06/2018 10:01

Ours is just coming up to 5 months too - she has been through a nasty bitey phase which seems to have come to an end with teething, thank goodness. She is now into jumping up the whole time and no amount of 'no' and 'get down' seems to stop her! However, she does sleep all through the night and wakes around 5 - we have a dog door so she can go in and out as she likes. I am hoping she will sleep later when the mornings are not so light!! She is absolutely gorgeous though and I have fallen completely in love with her!!

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 26/06/2018 10:03

PookyHook- yes I have had 2 cashmere jumpers ruined and can only wear trousers once as they get so dirty where she jumps up. It's horrid wearing long trousers in this weather but I know if I wear shorts or a skirt, I will end up with scratches all down my legs!

ohheckwhatnow · 26/06/2018 11:36

I am really looking forward to him coming home on Saturday. I am probably over thinking everything because that's what i do best 😊 I'll no doubt be back on here asking for advice from all of you puppy survivors!!!!

Iamblossom · 26/06/2018 11:42

Bit reassured yours are all jumping up too!! Drives me mad

ealingwestmum · 26/06/2018 14:29

We have a jumper here too iamblossom! I just about cope because she’s 7kg but not great in this rare, bare legs week Grin

katmunchkin · 26/06/2018 15:37

Our GSP Betty is now 13 weeks old and has been out walking for 2 weeks. From day 2 we let her off the lead (in a safe but open area) to "test" her recall and she's great - I don't doubt we'll soon have the teenage phase but as she's already so big (12.5kg!) and an active breed, she was desperate to let go and run for more than the 8 seconds to the end of the garden!

Aw very cute. Congrats!

Elphame · 01/07/2018 15:45

Ah she's sweet!

I'm currently dog sitting for a friend so have 2 bored and over heated dogs. Both want to play or go out for a walk but it's much too hot and sticky so they are both out of sorts, jumping at shadows and following me whenever I try and leave the room.

We have been promised a thunderstorm - for my sanity I hope it strikes soon!

elphame is there nowhere near you with water so they could have a splash about? Ford or pond or something?

Bedknobsandhoover · 01/07/2018 20:17

I’m walking early while it’s cool. Pup gets bored later when it’s far too hot to go out. He’s got a paddling pool in the shade which he loves and still has the energy to play with the neighbour’s dog who is twice the size of him.

Iamblossom · 01/07/2018 20:22

Dh walked pup early yesterday. Back fired massively as he then slept alllll day and was up for the day this morning at 4.41. ShockHmm

Elphame · 01/07/2018 21:12

lamb Sadly not really - it's too far to walk in the heat and my car isn't suitable for two dogs. Elfpup has made do with our garden pond and I have muddy paw marks on my carpet...

Less than a week til I can join in...
DH is visiting BastardPup tomorrow and then bringing him home on Friday. He'll be 11 weeks. Last time I had a pup was 1993....

Iamblossom · 08/07/2018 20:35

Took Blossompup for a lovely walk this evening, he had his first swim. It was a bit accidental so not sure how impressed he was!

Both my dogs were off lead the whole time, loads of other people and dogs. When I saw people approaching I started making sure he was aware of me, getting his attention, then he would run up to greet the people and dogs but listened to my "down" and recall commands and didn't jump up once! Lots of treating when he responded. Really pleased. Obviously I look and sound like a complete nutter to everyone and I am totally focussed on the dogs and can't chat but I think people can see I am training him.

He is completely toilet trained. He sleeps from whenever we go to bed, in his crate downstairs in his own, no noise at all, until 5.30-6am. He sits and stays. His recall is awesome. Love him to bits.

If I can just get him to stop treating our miniature dachshund like a chew toy!!! She went for her booster jabs on Friday but couldn't have them as a puncture would from his teeth on her neck is infected and she is now on ABs!!!

He is 16 weeks on Tuesday.

Is anyone else’s puppies eating less in this heat. Badlypup is no longer the food hoover she was. She should be getting through 700-800g of food a day. But is only managing about 600g. Is this something to worry about?

BiteyShark · 10/07/2018 09:48

ThisMorning I think quite a few dogs are eating less when it's very hot. Mine left his favourite breakfast the other day which is unlike him and he is well in himself. As long as they are healthy and not losing lots of weight (will be doing a lot less in this heat) I wouldn't worry.

SlothMama · 10/07/2018 09:56

My girls been the same, she's not eating all of her food and sleeps during her last feed. Yesterday was cooler and she ate all of her food with gusto!

Noonelikesfruitcake · 10/07/2018 20:54

Hi, can I join in? We are getting 10 week old cakepup in a week and a half and I'm so excited!
I've never had a dog before, though I've looked after friends' dogs on occasion. I'm reading everything on the KC website to get ready. Tomorrow I'm going shopping for bed/crate/toys/carriers etc etc. Any recommendations?

Can anyone else recommend any other books or websites etc I should read? It feels like there's a million things I need to remember and consider. Going to have to make some lists!!
