Feeding a dog once a day

Does anyone feed their dog just a lunch time. The dog walks 2 hours in the morning returning at 12. She then has a 45minute walk in the afternoon and half an hour in the evening . She is a 14 kilo terrier.
Would feeding her at 1pm be ok.
She does have treats on the morning walk and afternoon walk.

I feed mine 2x a day as recommended by my Vet.

nooka · 14/01/2018 07:48

We feed our dog three or more times every day but I think that's fairly unusual. Most of the other dogs in my family seem to be fed in the early evening.

InfiniteSheldon · 14/01/2018 07:50

We havebdruednfoid out all the time, generally they eat late evening and mid morning and come and ask if it runs out out but they will sometimes not eat all day and sometimes eat loads.

NargleFlargleZoobah · 14/01/2018 07:50

I don't think feeding once a day is a good idea, especially if your dog is a breed susceptible to bloat/GDV.
Mine get fed at 7am and 7pm and never before a walk.

InfiniteSheldon · 14/01/2018 07:51

Have dried food Blush

Accountant222 · 14/01/2018 08:06

Mine get fed twice a day, morning and mid afternoon, not huge amounts though

BiteyShark · 14/01/2018 08:54

Is there a particular reason you only want to feed once a day?

Mine has wet twice a day and I don't think he could physically consume the daily quanitity in one sitting.

DumbledoresArmy · 14/01/2018 09:09

My dog is once a day & on dried food that is weighed out.
She has a dog treat in the morning.

rightsaidfrederickII · 14/01/2018 09:22

Is there a reason / perceived benefit of feeding once a day?

PestDog gets his morning and evening, but as he's not enormously food motivated his morning kibble often lasts until evening.

We have not had her very long and trying to find out what suits her best. I asked for general information from those that do feed once a day. . At present she is fed Twice a day on Food that was supplied to us by the rescue. She poos quite frequently with very soft stools. I am thinking that 3 small meals a day may be better judging from the responses so far. She was quite a nervous dog but has gained in confidence now.

Maybe change the food? Look on allaboutdogfood.co.uk to compare all the different brands etc.

We had to change food a few times to get something that worked for our dog as he used to have soft/sloppy poos before we found the right one.

AstrantiaMajpr · 14/01/2018 09:49

I have introduced some Lily’s kitchen but it has not made any difference. I am a bit reluctant to change the food as when we first had her her poos were fine.

We feed our lab three times a day It seems to suit her and she never steals food as she is never really hungry. She will mooch a bit with big appealing eyes though! Ever the chancer.

Valerrie · 14/01/2018 10:04

My working breed dogs are fed once a day once they reach 12 months. They are of a breed where they pack a lot in at once and then won't eat again, so it's more their decision than mine. It's quite common in dogs on a raw diet.

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 14/01/2018 10:48

I feed my lab three small meals a day rather than one large meal as labs can be susceptible to bloat.

Oops4 · 14/01/2018 10:50

My dog goes through phases of eating less often. Mentioned it to the vet and they said a lot of dogs only eat once a day so aslong as weight ok if they only wanted fed once just go with it

Elphame · 14/01/2018 10:51

Like Bitey's mine gets two meals a day as I'm sure he couldn't actually manage it all in one sitting

trevortrevorslattery · 14/01/2018 10:52

We just put the food out in the morning and they can eat it whenever they like during the day

AstrantiaMajpr · 16/01/2018 08:19

Thank you again for the advice. I have kept the same food and fed 3 small meals a day. A great improvement in the poo situation.

My young whippet is fed 3 times a day. He burns up calories so quickly that it’s the only way to keep weight on him.

chipsandpeas · 16/01/2018 10:43

Mine gets wet food twice a day but has access to a bowl of dry food all the time

BiteyShark · 16/01/2018 12:20

That's good news OP. Sounds like her stomach just struggled to digest the amount of food hence being better with more smaller meals.

monkeywithacowface · 16/01/2018 13:20

We do three meals a day. If you're getting runny poo it does help to give smaller regular meals.

fleshmarketclose · 16/01/2018 13:37

Eric gets his main meal early evening but he does get a "snack" after his morning walk at about 11am which is either a small portion of his dinner to come, a bone, some veg and a bonio or veg and a couple of markies. It's basically to encourage him to settle down for a snooze after his walk tbh rather than because he might starve without it.

noitsnotteatimeyet · 16/01/2018 20:44

My dog gets three meals spread out throughout the day - he burns calories like nobody’s business and on two meals (same total quantity of food) he was throwing up bile overnight as he was getting hungry. Giving him a before bedtime snack has stopped that completely
