Feeding a dog once a day

Does anyone feed their dog just a lunch time. The dog walks 2 hours in the morning returning at 12. She then has a 45minute walk in the afternoon and half an hour in the evening . She is a 14 kilo terrier.
Would feeding her at 1pm be ok.
She does have treats on the morning walk and afternoon walk.

Very small breakfast, more substantial lunch and dinner. OhDog is a small terrier, though, and it’s to stop his blood sugar level dropping. Maybe when he’s older he will swap to one mid morning and late afternoon, like my mum’s dog.

How long have you had her? My rescue gets very loose stools when stressed but a bit of pro biotic paste sorts her right out. She gets fed 3 times a day

My dog has a biscuit at breakfast time and is occasionally in the mood for a bit of toast or egg if I'm having some. I generally offer food at lunchtime which she may or may not eat. If she does eat it she generally won't be hungry at dinner time, although I always offer food. She would starve if she only ate once per day, as would I!

@Deep friedPizza we have had her 4 weeks. We were told that she was a nervous dog. She has settled in well, but jumps at every sound. Could you tell me a bit more about the probiotic paste.

She seems to do good poos one day then a bit sloppy the next, even though we are consistent with food. She is not unwell, very lively and has lots of walks, but, because it is all new to me,I don’t really don’t know what is normal

My dog has a small kibble breakfast and then a tea of kibble and wet food . OP do the sloppy poos happen on walks or in the garden ? My dog will occasionally do a second , small sloppy poo on a walk almost as if he feels he has to squeeze one out whilst he is out although he never does sloppy poo at home .

AstrantiaMajpr · 17/01/2018 09:46

She only poos on walks. Our garden is paved and she only ever goes on grass. She is walked 3 times a day. Without wishing to sound like a poo troll, she goes twice on the morning walk, then again on the night time walk.

Be glad yours will only poo on grass. Mine chooses pavers over grass in the yard and it’s a nightmare trying to keeep them clean.

It's called pro-Kolin, I got it from Amazon. I just used it until they were consistently firm then stopped.

Pizzapup was the same when we first got her, would sometimes do a solid one then the next would be water. She really benefits from Bran Flakes in her food in the morning, we have kept up with the bran flakes even now we've had her 5 months. We notice a real difference if we forget. She was/is a nervous pup but has got a lot better.

Sloppy poos are also a sign of overfeeding. If we've been a bit treat happy then she gets a bit loose.

Thank you for that.

My little rescued dog came to us from dogs trust on dry food, but he wasn’t eating any of. We changed him to Caesar (didn’t know any Better) and his poos became very sloppy. We changed again to 2 meals a day with Forthglade complete wet food and haven’t looked back, happy dog and happy owners.

AstrantiaMajpr · 25/01/2018 14:13

I have ordered the pro-kaolin and changed her food to Lily’s Kitchen. She seems much better. I wonder how much the pooing on every walk was due to nerves. She is a very nervous and reactive dog.

The advice on here has been great. She now has three small meals a day and only poos on her morning walk. She also has been having Bach rescue remedy, which is supposed to settle nerves.

My how our lives have changed. I cannot believe that coffee time each morning now involves dog poo discussions.

Mine get fed kibble in the morning at 7.30 am. If it is cold, they get it with hot water which softens it and gives it a gravy - they go bonkers for it! They then get fed at 7pm - kibble (JWB) and meat (Butchers).

They do well on this, although the little one is very prone to putting on weight, so I have to be very careful making sure he doesn't get more than he should by stealing the other one's food!

Bedknobsandhoover · 26/01/2018 19:53

I think it’s a very outdated thing to feed only once daily, most dogs in this country get two meals a day.
However, I know a retired guide dog whose owner was told to feed only kibble, only once daily, and to never give any treats, so she thinks this is what working guide dogs get.

3 small meals a day here for my JRT plus he has a kong stuffed with cooked chicken either when left or to keep him quiet in the evening!
