What does your dog do all day?

My dog sleeps.
Occasionally gets up to be let out for a wee, or to eat and drink.
Then back to sleep.and to dream, judging by the sleep woofs.
She’s almost 11.

I have noticed for my Schnauzer the best part of any walk for her is to meet another dog, preferably one that wants to play, and play... and play ... Grin
She craves attention from other dogs. She doesn’t need to walk as such she just wants to play, she does love humans but other dogs make her day.

onemorecakeplease · 12/01/2018 20:35

Sleeps, eats, cuddles. That’s it really

He gets one walk a day and two bigger walks at the weekend but he’d be happy just being left to snooze on the sofa really.

He’s 1 and a Lurcher cross.

BestIsWest · 12/01/2018 20:37

missyB1 same here. They’re never happier than when meeting other dogs. Schnauzers too.

theuntameableshrew · 12/01/2018 20:39

figrolls your dogs are gorgeous 😍

DDog (not really mine, but I look after him a lot for a friend) is unfortunately left while we go out to work - not something I like, but not something that's really in my control / my responsibility as he's not actually mine.

Anyway, I'm pretty sure he mainly sleeps during the day as the house is never destroyed (or even lightly damaged) except for the bed having been slept in / enrichment activities played with and if for some reason he has to be awake all day on a non-work day he is begging to go to sleep by 6/7pm. Naturally he is walked extensively in the evenings and weekends.

Here is the spoilt madam Smile

Up at 6:30, out in the garden, then breakfast.
Then Big Dogs lie in front of the fire/begging for bits of toast from DP.
Little Dog comes back to bed with me and farts at me while I eat my breakfast. When I get up for my shower she crawls into my warm patch and goes to sleep.
The rest of the day is spent napping/playing in the garden/out for a walk.
Tea at 5pm, followed by a chew.
Evening spent jockeying for position in front of the fire/on the sofa with me and DP.
Bed at 9.

fairgame84 · 12/01/2018 21:32

Sleeps all day and all night. Occasionally gets up for a sniff, stretch or drink. Only pees twice per day. Has a very short walk before I go to work. He literally walks to the field at the bottom of the street, has a poo and then refuses to walk any further unless we are heading back home.
He will follow me into the kitchen when I'm cooking just to see if anything gets dropped. He gets up if he hears the oven timer as well Hmm
He never plays but was a stray until last year so has never had that growing up and he's 6 ish now.
He is the laziest dog I have ever known.

TropicPlunder · 12/01/2018 21:51

I kind of agree OP. I live in Africa and my dogs live outside mostly. They don't play as such, or have formal walks, but they are really sociable and enjoy trips out. They're a local breed and traditionally hunt (never look like They could be arsed) and guard villages. They sleep a LOT. Otherwise they are really content to follow us around and ' join in' in a low-key way. I enjoy their company immensely....even if they won't chase a ball or pull a rope with me!

Areyouready · 12/01/2018 21:54

You see my theory is that dogs are inherently lazy, and are not unhappy being left to themselves so long as they have food, water, a sniff once in a while and a chance meeting with another dog.

Figrollsnotfatrolls · 12/01/2018 22:16

Ddog is fed up with TV - her frequent past time.

Christmastits · 12/01/2018 22:18

Thievery! Today he did a really great job of robbing things! Went to Pets at Home and didn't notice him half inching a pig until we got to the car.. we went back and paid for it.

But usually he asleep after his walk.

Dozyoldtwonk · 12/01/2018 22:24

My secret is to have more than one…they entertain each other for hours Grin (all neutered). That and the DC keep ours on their toes & entertained - then there’s eating (2x a day), drinking, going out into the garden whenever they fancy, sleeping and (most days) a fairly lengthy walk off-lead. I have to confess though there is the odd day we don’t walk. Just the odd one. We do have a big garden however Blush

Every other week they have a bath; they go completely nuts every time Shock

Mine have never been into toys or chewing thank god

I don’t disageee with your points @areyouready

Unicornsandrainbows3 · 12/01/2018 22:25

missy my schnauzer is the same, right down to the manic 'zoomies' at bedtime phase each night. Fancies himself as quite the hunter too, loves stalking and chasing bugs, lizards, mice and whatever else but has never yet caught anything. Other than that he is my little shadow.

ScreamingValenta · 12/01/2018 22:26

@Christmastits Those eyes! What a gorgeous chap!

Areyouready · 12/01/2018 22:31

You see Fairgame84 why do you assume he has missed out on play? He probably got to play as a stray in his litter, up until he was 4 or 5 months old, and then just became a dog. An inherently lazy creature, with no motivation what so ever to create wealth, schools or health care systems. Dogs are like that.
And happy doing nothing

OP posts:
Areyouready · 12/01/2018 22:34

No intention of doing anything, ever.

Missy does your dh/dp mind being called a madam?

Shadowboy · 12/01/2018 22:35

Sleep. A bored dog never sleeps. Ours sleep about 19 hours in every 24!!

Tatie3 · 12/01/2018 22:36

My 4 year old greyhound takes his retirement very seriously, he's a real velcro dog so he follows me from room to room sleeping wherever I am. We go for a brisk 20-30 mins walk first thing, then breakfast and the school run on weekdays, another walk at lunchtime and then the afternoon school run. Usually we pop out at tea time and zoom around the garden for 5 mins before bed.

missyB1 · 12/01/2018 22:40

shushpenfold she’s been called worse Grin

missyB1 · 12/01/2018 22:46

Oh unicorn I forgot about the hunting / stalking! Squirrels and rabbits are her favourite. I must admit I sometimes take her to Pets at home to look at the rabbits and guinnea pigs just to keep her happy! Blush She doesn’t bark at them just stares through the glass and wags her tail madly!

Mumelie · 12/01/2018 22:52

Up first thing to pop out for a quick wee, then it's 'how much cat food can I steal before I get yelled at' time. A walk after breakfast then snoozes all day (bar barking at the postman). Comes out on the school run and another walk at 3 ish. Back home to bother the cats til her dinner time. Then it's take up as much of the sofa, snooze and fart a lot til bedtime! It's a dogs life

IamLucyBarton · 12/01/2018 22:53

OP I have been wondering the same for quite some time. I think I agree with you totally.
