Greyhound coming for home check tomorrow

Tatie3 · 13/12/2017 14:10

After years of desperately wanting a dog we are having a home check with the Greyhound Trust tomorrow and I just want to share my excitement with you all! I went along to the kennels on Monday with my toddler and was matched to a very handsome 4 year old blonde haired ex racer that has been around the volunteer's young grandchildren. We took him for a walk and I just fell in love!

Congratulations!

Get a bin lock.

Our greyhound is an ex-racer bordering on the dull! We've had him six months and he's slept for 179 days (probably). He's just started going off lead in the park as we realised he doesn't recognise other dogs as the same species unless they are the same silhouette.

I haven't managed to train him to sleep on my feet while I work as he rotates between his crate (with duvet) and the couch. We all luffs him.

I'm really enjoying hearing about all your lovely experiences, I'm counting down the hours now til he arrives!

Hope all goes well, I’m moving to a much bigger house next year and a rescue greyhound is top of my list after we move!

retirednow · 14/12/2017 10:37

What an exciting day, pics please.

BagelGoesWalking · 14/12/2017 11:01

Estee Lalonde adopted her greyhound Reggie from a rescue just down the road from us. I think Reggie has his own Instagram page - my DD follows him!

I love anyone who adopts and doesn't "shop".

Twopeapods · 14/12/2017 11:14

Brilliant OP!
Very exciting times. It's so rewarding having a rescue. We have a podenco rescue, who is about the same size and body shape, and is very similar nature wise. Ita true for him that he loves dogs that are lurched types.
I am able to let him off lead and he's fine. No prey drive in him even though ex hunter.
I think it will just depend on his nature.
Good luck!

Twopea - he is absolutely beautiful.

Guns - if you are getting a bigger house, get two hounds, so much better than 1 :-)

EeylopsOwlEmporium · 14/12/2017 14:11

Oh my goodness, Twopea your Pod is absolutely gorgeous! I'd love a pod but it's just not feasible at the moment we needed something lazier. OP, honestly he settled himself in from day one, we've hardly had any trouble around the house with him. He howled at first when left but loved his crate so we just built the time up slowly and only go back in when he's quiet, he's fine for an hour or so now. Had a few days of counter surfing but he was mortified when I caught him at it and told him off, he's never done it since as he hates being in trouble. I haven't let him offlead yet but he's not been here long enough to try that. The only real problem I've had is the stupid whippy tail got split open on the first day and never healed, it's ended up having to come off after a lot of vet trips and blood everywhere. I wish I'd known on the first day how to treat a happy tail injury! Hope everything is going well for you today.

gunsandbanjos · 14/12/2017 15:21

Haha @userxx we definitely have plans for 2 dogs but not 2 hounds unfortunately! I’ve managed to sell my husband on 1 but the other is to be his choice.

userxx · 14/12/2017 16:39

Eeylops - how do you treat the injury? Our's was minus half his tail when he arrived.

Guns - was worth a try wasn't it !!

Tinselistacky · 14/12/2017 16:58

Where's the pics then???
Invested folk here op!!

Tatie3 · 15/12/2017 14:41

Sorry I've been busy enjoying cuddles! I'm utterly smitten with him, he's just had a mad dash around the garden and flopped down in his bed. He's such a gentle giant. His farts are evil though!

Aww he’s lovely!! Jealous.

userxx · 15/12/2017 15:25

Wow, didn't realise he would arrive so quickly!!

He is absolutely gorgeous and looks like he has fully made himself at home!

EeylopsOwlEmporium · 15/12/2017 15:26

He's beautiful OP, congratulations! Userxx, I should have had something to protect the cut from day one. It started as just a small cut but it opened up every time he wagged his tail and hit it (on everything) so it just couldn't heal and eventually got infected. And then after the amputation he hit it again and opened the wound. The vet who saw him that time taped a plastic syringe case over the end and it now has a cling-film inner tube on it - just something to stop the wound getting continually hit and split open. We've managed nearly a week with no blood splattered around the house now Grin

Iamagreyhoundhearmeroar · 15/12/2017 15:31

He's gorgeous Smile

daisychicken · 15/12/2017 15:36

Oh he's gorgeous! Is he staying with you?

I'm hoping to get a rescue greyhound next summer (lost our old boy last December) when I can have a block of time to settle him/her in so I'm avidly reading all threads for tips!

Nomoretears56 · 15/12/2017 15:47

He's gorgeous and yes Greyhound farts are noxious Xmas Grin

CMOTDibbler · 15/12/2017 18:25

He's gorgeous! I have two lurchers of my own, and foster, so currently have three lounging hounds

SunnyL · 15/12/2017 18:33

I met Harvey the whippet this morning on my walk who was having a sit down protest 10 metres from his front door. It was not whippet weather apparently. Wish my daft mongrel had felt the same way.

Good luck! I was brought up with lurchers and loved them all

Wolfiefan · 15/12/2017 18:39

Oh my. He's gorgeous.
I second equafleece. They even come in wolfhound sizes!!
Have a look at safe spaces near you. You can hire a secure field for exercise.

userxx · 15/12/2017 20:00

Eeylops - didn't realise the tail gets infected but it makes sense if it isn't allowed to heal properly, it also makes sense that the vet whips it off. Hope it heals quickly and your days of cleaning up blood are over....... it doesn't sound like much fun Wink

Tatie3 · 15/12/2017 23:50

Yes the home check went well as although they understandably don't re-home to households with children over Christmas it was quite clear that he is my dog and not a novelty Christmas present for the kids.

After seeing his bolting around the garden I can't wait to find somewhere secure to let him run free. He loves to chase a ball but doesn't know he needs to pick it up when he gets to it!
