Her name is Matilda.

BiteyShark · 05/01/2018 10:20

I had to look up some pictures of that mix as I couldn't visualise what she might look like in my head Grin. I think with the husky mix you probably do need a dog walker for all that energy Wink.

Lovely name Smile

Anyone want a 6mth old Welsh Terrier? Just caught him trying to dig a hole through my iPad....

He must have grown a bit as he couldn't reach that shelf a few days ago. Oh well I guess a few more scratches on the screen don't really matter. Now off to see what else he can get hold of now.

BiteyShark · 05/01/2018 10:40

Elphame ouch that could have been expensive Sad

reebsr33bs · 05/01/2018 11:07

Hi everyone- I have a 9.5 week cocker and oh my gawd , over the last few days she has really upped her biting game, it feels almost constant and the kids are scared of her!

I'm doing redirection to toys, treating calm behaviour and timing out if it gets too bad.

The only thing that helps when it's happening is a carrot stick or kong but I'm wary of over feeding using these too much??

Anyone else got a baby shark on their hands ?

BiteyShark · 05/01/2018 11:15

Mine is a cocker and I thought the name cockerdile suited him very well and my username is in honour of him Grin.

Yes the biting was particularly bad and I had holes on my jeans from his sharp teeth. It does get better Grin

AllRoadsLeadBackToRadley · 05/01/2018 11:18

If anything I'll probably outwalk her! 😃

KinkyDoritowithsparkleson · 05/01/2018 12:00

I'm thinking Crocopoo for mine. It is nuts here too reebs - I've just purchased some very attractive lambs' tracheas from where I buy my food on advice to try. She said to give them frozen.

To be honest, it's not really chewing here - it's the excitable, playful biting that is the issue. I'm going to have a go with time outs as suggested on the thread. He's 9 weeks, 1 day. He seems to think feet are far more fun than any nylabone on offer.

ZivaDiva · 05/01/2018 12:36

I know the advice is generally not to squeal but it does seem to work with mine, he turns the nip into a lick then sits and looks at me so I then treat or give him a toy.
Big pup is also doing a fab job of teaching him to keep his teeth to himself! They’ll play a bit but the moment pups gets overexcited big pup will close down the game and go and lie quietly. I’m taking my cue from him as he speaks dog language much better than me.😀

BiteyShark · 05/01/2018 16:32

Well two down one to go. Staples are out but we need to make sure he doesn't go skidding about for a while. That's fine as he's a pain to walk on the lead so we can get some lead training in for the next few days.

He no longer needs his boot Grin

The downside is he can't lick his paw (which the little monkey was doing in the car when I got back home Shock) so the cone has to stay on him for the weekend so he's still giving me the evil eye Sad

KinkyDoritowithsparkleson · 05/01/2018 20:20

That's a good start, Bitey. Pleased to hear his staples are out. So long horrid boot!

Yokohamajojo · 05/01/2018 20:42

Still here but not posting much! Glad to hear about pas bitey! That’s great news! Smile

ziva it totally worked for ours too Blush

And for anyone with new puppies and kids! Our one who is now 1 was a bit of a nightmare with jumping on them and nipping and our puppy class training teacher taught us and the kids ‘to be a tree’ just stop still hands across chest and look up! So works and we still use it!

Yokopup who is an Irish terrier is doing great but as bitey said earlier we all have issues and our one is recall! 😔 he is such a great dog and in bigger spaces he is great and w can have him off lead, local park with joggers, bicycles and kids not so much still on a long line

Cocobananas · 05/01/2018 21:40

Bitey, glad progress is being made, at least he will be able to pee in comfort now.
Ziva, our old lab girl took new Heeler pup under her wing many moons ago including banging her paw down hard on the kitchen floor if he overstepped the mark. Wish she was here now to sort out cocodog when she gets silly😢
Reebs, use some of daily food allowance to stuff Kong, they are so useful to distract and teach calm time.

beanhunter · 05/01/2018 21:52

So beanpup can go for a walk tomorrow! Also have out first puppy clsss which I’m looking forward to. Though he will doubtless pee and poo all over the class!

KinkyDoritowithsparkleson · 05/01/2018 23:38

bean have a lovely walk! I can't wait to go outside.

A quick question, I may need to work in a week's time. I would need to leave him for about 1hr 45minutes in the afternoon. I'm not sure whether I should leave him this long? How long would you leave your pup in the early weeks? Thanks. Flowers

BiteyShark · 06/01/2018 06:28

I'm glad some pups stop biting when you squeal which is somewhat easier and quicker than removing yourself. It just made mine 10x worse and it took a while for me to throw that guide out the window and do timeouts which is why I greatly advocate them if squealing isn't working as I spent far too long at the beginning trying to go by some guides thinking they must be right.

Yoko you have my sympathies as recall was BiteyDogs big issue in the past and it tends to make walking quite stressful at times.

bean enjoy your walk. I took BiteyDog out last night and you would think he was a daft puppy on his first walk again. Almost pulled my arm off and me over at times. I have some work to do to get him back under control on the lead again. Bloody illnesses and accidents keep knocking our training back each time and we have to start again Angry.

KinkyDorito I left pup alone whilst I hid everyday from day one for a bit and tried to extend it each time to get him used to being left. At 13 weeks I had to leave him alone for up to three hours when I went back to work. This is my personal opinion and I know others won't agree with me but I think a lot of the time the pups just cry because they are sad and want to be with you 24/7 (true SA is different like with Wolfie and blues pups) so I used to leave mine and spy on him and yes he cried initially but I wouldn't go back if he was just crying. He would settle himself eventually and then I would go back, not make a fuss and then leave again increasing the time gradually. It was hard and like I said others won't agree with leaving them to cry at all but I did in the day when I knew they had been to the toilet and it was just noise.

How long have you left him so far and how's it going?

ZivaDiva · 06/01/2018 07:51

I’ve been leaving Zivapup for short periods of time from day one. Just 10mins to start with while I nipped to the shops , now about an hour at 9.5 weeks. Sometimes I’m just upstairs and ,more often than not, DS is in his room upstairs or DH is in the study, but as far as pup knows he’s alone, apart from big pup of course who has free range of downstairs. Neither dog is allowed upstairs.
All has been peaceful so far.

KinkyDoritowithsparkleson · 06/01/2018 08:28

Thanks - I've left him for 10 minutes or so to get DS ready for school. Because I've only recently finished my main work, I still have childcare so DS went to school with his childminder. Dpup cried for the whole 10 minutes I was upstairs.

I think I might drive DS to school next week, so the round trip will be about 20-25 minutes. Once I know that's okay, I'll walk it instead for about 40 minutes. DD is at uni, so in the house and able to keep an ear out for Dpup.

By the time I need to try and do the 1 hour 45 minutes, he will be nearly 11 weeks, although DD said she will try and be here for him.

That is the maximum time I will need to leave him for work now as I've changed what I do (from teaching to tutoring on an afternoon/evening), and I thought that was pretty good going. Then I started reading a behaviour site which thinks you should never leave them alone and started to feel very guilty!

KinkyDoritowithsparkleson · 06/01/2018 08:31

I took BiteyDog out last night and you would think he was a daft puppy on his first walk again. So pleased and excited to be out again! I'm happy for you - I can already see how desperate Dpup is to get out and explore; it must be so hard when they're already used to doing that then have to stop.

BiteyShark · 06/01/2018 08:33

There are so many different opinions that as long as I am happy with what I am doing then I go by that. We all bring up our pups differently as no dog/household is the same so I ignore any website that is 'our way or no way' iykwim.

BiteyShark · 06/01/2018 08:35

Ha yes Grin I am just having breakfast then going to brave another bouncy walk with him (going to put on walking boots so he can't pull me over Grin)

ZivaDiva · 06/01/2018 08:41

Good luck Bitey. DH has taken bigpup out for a mud bath so little pup and I are having quality time. 😍🐶💤

KinkyDoritowithsparkleson · 06/01/2018 08:44

Bitey I think it's unrealistic to expect to never leave them alone. I would say that you need to train them to be okay for some periods, just in case you have to leave them. I'm going to work on building up his times over the next week and a half. I hope you have a more settled walk! Smile

KinkyDoritowithsparkleson · 06/01/2018 08:45

Ziva Lovely Smile.

BiteyShark · 06/01/2018 10:15

Well I managed to stay vertical during our walk (just). He's now sleeping so I can catch up on some with.

Awww Ziva how cute Smile
