He's gone to the vets for X-rays

He ran out on to the lane by our house and a pick up with a trailer hit him

I am devestated. The dc are quiet and asking when he is coming home

Vet just rang to say it's his back end and they will know more once he he had tests done.

Hand hold please while we wait....

His op went well. Six broken bones - my poor baby
Two pelvic fractures, two hip joints and two bones in his front paw plus more damage to pelvis which will repair itself.
But he is ok that's the main thing, long way to go for recovery but we will get there.
He was so good despite being in so much pain, wagging his tail and saying hello to everyone. He gave us lovely cuddles and kisses before we left.
Vet says he will be easy to nurse as he's such a good boy
Cage rest for four weeks then housebound for 6-8
We should have him home next weekend the vet wants him walking and pain free first. I think I am a little bit in love with the vet he was so lovely!! - all the nurses too and the receptionist who was so caring.

So sorry this has happened to you. My dog saw a pigeon a couple of years ago and shot through the gate. My friends husband was driving home from work and I just jumped into the road and yelled at him to stop... Glad your boy is insured. I try to impress the importance of insurance on anyone I know who owns a dog!

TheDailyWail · 21/10/2017 05:19

My dog got run over at 11 months too. The car was going slowly as it was just over a hump in the road. She had broken her back leg. The vets said it was a possibility that she might die from shock, so it was a 24 hour wait. We had to take her to a specialist who put a rod in her leg - she cried the whole way there Sad. She recovered really well and lived to 14.5 years, having only died a couple of weeks ago. (Missing her terribly)

Your dog is gorgeous and I hope he recovers just as well. X

onemorecakeplease · 21/10/2017 05:37

Oh daily I'm so sorry to hear you have lost your friend - what a good life she had with you tho 14.5 years

Yes just so glad we have good insurance it's probably going to be around 7k all in as already have a 5k bill just from the op. By the time I pay the vets here and we get more X-rays and physio and hydro I'll be maxed out.

I said to dh as we were driving home I feel terribly sad for anyone who has to say no they can't go through with the surgery as they can't afford it. How awful to be in that situation.

Good luck wings hope the surgery goes well too x

On our insurance complementary treatments such as hydrotherapy are separate from the main pot (ours is £4K), but restricted to 10 sessions. (Petplan).

Teacupinastorm · 21/10/2017 09:01

What a beautiful boy! I have been thinking of you all, so horrible when something like this happens. Fingers crossed for a speedy recovery!

UnbornMortificado · 21/10/2017 09:09

So pleased it went well.

Six bones the poor lad.

My great uncles dog escaped and ended up badly burnt on his face, luckily they had insurance and he lived to 15.

My uncle loved that dog, he ended up in a bit of a physical altercation when some bloke called poor Ddog the ugliest thing he'd ever seen.

Floralnomad · 21/10/2017 09:35

So glad you have had a good , successful outcome , he's a very lucky boy.

Wolfiefan · 21/10/2017 09:53

I'm so pleased it went well and yes thank goodness for insurance. All our pets are insured. I couldn't stand worrying that I may have to pts because of financial reasons. Good luck with the rehab.

PandorasXbox · 21/10/2017 09:56

So many broken bones, poor Ted. Really glad to hear he’s doing ok though. He sounds like a gorgeous boy. Smile

Blodplod · 21/10/2017 10:02

Glad things are looking up for Ted.

Whywonttheyletmeusemyusername · 21/10/2017 10:21

So pleased it went well for the beautiful boy

BiteyShark · 21/10/2017 14:09

Glad it went well for Ted. Thank god for insurance as worrying about money on top of worrying about the dog would be awful and I agree it's so nice for that not to factor into any decisions. Here's hoping for a speedy recovery Flowers

glovesonstrings · 21/10/2017 17:05

Glad it went well. X

mirren3 · 21/10/2017 17:26

weallhave If it is Broadleys in Stirling they are fantastic, we were referred there with hip dysplasia in our Lab, turned out he had torn his cruciate ligament in his knee. The whole team are brilliant, I'm sure it will be fine.

WeAllHaveWings · 22/10/2017 00:55

mirren it is broadleys, good to hear a positive experience. Dh was there with ddog last week for his consultation/X-rays and said it had a good feel about it. Still dreading him going and the recovery as I’ve heard orthopedic surgery is a harder recovery than normal surgery. He is 38kgs of Labrador so it will be difficult to support him.

onemorecakeplease · 22/10/2017 21:28

Well Ted seems to be doing well.
The nurses call each morning to give me updates, he can't stand yet but is eating well and seems bright enough.

They hope to get him up in the next couple of days and support him to walk.

I'm missing him so much. I just can't wait to have him back home - looks like it might be longer as they won't let him home until he can walk and in less pain.
He's in the right place and in good hands but the house is so quiet without him.

Good luck to all those having surgery soon x

justdontevenfuckingstart · 22/10/2017 21:33

He will be home soon, glad it's worked out and good luck for everyone else too xx

Wolfiefan · 22/10/2017 21:36

Hope he's home soon.

BiteyShark · 22/10/2017 21:37

Yes he is in good hands but hoping he is back with you soon. A house without a dog is very empty Sad

onemorecakeplease · 22/10/2017 21:57

It really is empty. He snuggles with me every night and I sit up far longer than I should at night as I don't want to put him to bed!

It's his 1st birthday in December. Just hope to have him back on his feet and take him a walk to his favourite field. The dc want to have a little party too.

Does anyone have any suggestions of things to keep him occupied in his crate for the first month? Good toys you've found last well or keep their interest?

Thanks

OP posts:
Wolfiefan · 22/10/2017 22:03

Ha I'm sitting up now!
Stuffed Kong? We used to soak dried food. Stuff Kong and freeze!
Raw carrot is a good low fat chew.
Nylabone is robust.
A puzzle feeder?

insert1usernamehere · 23/10/2017 11:38

Ditto all the suggestions Wolfie has made.

Once he's able to support his weight on three legs and bat something about with a front paw, the Kong Wobblers are brilliant

Poundland has some rope ball toy things that DDog loves to destroy

You can also get inventive e.g. taking a silicone trivet with a honeycomb pattern and spreading peanut butter onto it so that the dog really has to work with their tongue to get it all out again www.ebay.co.uk/i/172797912471?chn=ps&var=471582235071&dispItem=1&adgroupid=45816795725&rlsatarget=pla-370377404333&abcId=1128936&adtype=pla&merchantid=113369764&poi=&googleloc=9045995&device=c&campaignid=856936463&crdt=0

Ddog also likes nothing better than to snuggle under the duvet covers, so yours might appreciate having a spare duvet in there to sleep on or under.
