Does anyone fancy a puppy survival thread part 3

Continuation of the support thread.... anyone is welcome whether they have new or older puppies, just want a chat or are battling with ongoing puppy problems.

I thought I would start this thread off as I am hoping it might be the last one I need support from as BiteyPup is now 9.5 months old and we have survived the early puppy months and his teenage antics seem to be subsiding. Still working on our relationship and recall but it's getting better and can finally see some light at the end of the tunnel (fingers crossed) Wine

Awwwww some gorgeous puppy pics guys! So so cute. We just experienced our first thunder storm on a walk - didn't care one bit Grin just wanted the ball thrown again!

BiteyShark · 19/07/2017 18:56

SkeletonSkins my old parents dog used to destroy most of the room during a storm or fireworks as he got himself into such a state so I was very relieved when BiteyDog didn't bat an eyelid.

Lovely punter and all the other pups.

I'm still here and still have Bluepuppy. He seems to be improving slowly but is still very high maintainence. Good thing he's cute Grin

He finally had his whippet play date today. We didn't leave them by themselves but they had a good play and the woman is hsppy to meet up again in the future seeing as she lives very close. She thought Bluepuppy was super handsome Smile

I've decided I'm going to try and keep him as an only dog for now. Not sure my little back garden can take two Whippeys tearing around on the sad little patch of grass. Plus one lot of dog poo to pick up is enough to be honest Grin

Here's a couple of photos from today, just to show how grown up and handsome he is.

Soubriquet · 20/07/2017 10:41

I had my first show up today with Lexa

Usually if she sees dogs, she either walks around them and avoids or comes close to me and heels.

Not today... nooo...she went chasing after this little dog determind to play. Was doing mad zoomies round and round him and me. She was like a little rocket and was impossible to catch.

Managed to grab her in the end and apologised to the poor man whose arm was being yanked out by his little dog lunging on the end of their lead.

Bright side, this is the first time in a while she's come home from a walk and crashed Grin

BiteyShark · 20/07/2017 11:59

blue I was thinking about you the other day wondering how you and bluepup were getting on. I honestly know I would not be able to cope with two dogs so BiteyDog is destined to be an only dog but he does get to play with other dogs at daycare so I don't feel too guilty.

Soubriquet as soon as mine got older and more independent he showed me up LOTS Grin

Lyra (puppy) has been pretty good so far.she usually does a wee everytime we take her outside, but unfortunately still wee's inside at will-but we are half way right anyway which isn't bad for 8 weeks old and 4 days here.
Bear (our 1 year old) has started to play with her a bit now, after hiding under the bed for the first two days she was here,as she is clearly quite threatening Wink
Dcat just rolled his eyes as if to say 'what have you bought into my house now woman?'

Indy has been so nippy today. I thought he was getting less, but he is only 12 weeks though.

BiteyShark · 20/07/2017 17:29

nigelsbigface I love how big dog and cat are looking at pup thinking 'what is that' Grin

GooodMythicalMorning I so don't miss the bitey stage, puppy teeth are razor sharp Sad

nigel that's fab progress for your pups housetraining! Accidents happen for a little while but definitely steps in the right direction!

SkeletonSkins · 21/07/2017 11:05

Good that nippy phase is awful. I basically surrounded myself with different chews and toys and lots of carrots and swapped them in to replace my hand/leg/clothes etc my house was a mess but it really helped with the biting.

GooodMythicalMorning · 21/07/2017 11:25

Just bought him lots of chew toys and DD bought him a toy pig. Tired him out with a long walk so hopefully he won't be as nippy today

BestIsWest · 21/07/2017 11:30

Seems to be mixed progress with toilet training here. No accidents yesterday and he asked to go out every time, then did a poo and a pee in the dining room this morning.

We have a humper on our hands. Big dog has a beloved toy sheep which puppy keeps trying to hump, and this morning he's been trying to hump big dog (who just lets him carry on). He's only 10 weeks!

Any tips on how to stop it? We've never had a humpy dog before.

Wolfiefan · 21/07/2017 11:32

Blue that's great news on the play date.
Nigel that cat's face! WTAF IS THAT!!!!
Good I hated that stage. I was told to have a big fluffy toy in each room. Blue or yellow are good as they can see them. (Try charity shop!) Keep toy out of reach of pup. Mad biting? Wave toy in a figure of 8 at pup height and throw away from pup. When toy murdering is over remove it. Toy is only for biting.
Complete failure here at trying to get her claws clipped. Nurse gave up.

BiteyShark · 21/07/2017 12:17

Hey Skeleton how is your boy doing?

Wolf my groomer says he hates having his feet touched so asked me to play with them. I have decided though just to take him to the vets when he needs his doing again as I can hold him. Have you seen those electric type files you can get for nails? Do you think she might tolerate you using one of those on her?

Best we found every time we thought we cracked the toileting he would pee on the floor but we did get there in the end. No idea on the humping as he has never done it.

We just went for an early second walk before the heavy rains get here. I am trying to teach him the stop command so one pip on the whistle and he should sit. A third of the time he did it, the other third he looked at me like I was nuts and the other times he decided I was asking for recall Hmm.

SkeletonSkins · 21/07/2017 14:58

Best not sure if it's the right thing or wrong thing but I told him off when he humped as it's not behaviour I want, I find it embarrassing!! So if he was humping I would say no in firm voice and move him off, then ask for a sit or whatever and give a toy to distract him and give him something else to do. It definitely reduced, he never really does it now.

I was duped into those metal nile files for dogs - they're rubbish, don't bother!!! I'm building myself up to cut pups.

Pup is good, he's still a bit cheeky about getting back on his lead and stands about a foot away Grin It's mad here at the minute - I live where the Open Golf tournament is being held so all the parks and fields are being used as car parks!

I'm really looking forward to starting agility with him - our club does a foundations course at around 9 months, all on the flat, but I think he'll love it.

BestIsWest · 21/07/2017 15:25

Yes, I think distraction is a good tip, thank you skeleton.

I've just managed to cut one single puppy claw.

BiteyShark · 21/07/2017 15:31

I am seriously thinking about adding an agility class to our training as I have seen a few groups around me but waiting to contact them until after he has been neutered to get that over with first.

BestIsWest · 21/07/2017 15:38

We did an agility course last year with big dog. We both loved it (me and the dog). Unfortunately it was held outdoor so only ran over the Summer and we've not found another locally.

I'd highly recommend it.

Wolfiefan · 21/07/2017 16:06

She won't fit at agility! Blush
Pup used to grab my hand with her teeth the moment I touched her legs or feet or tried to groom her. She's much better now. Ordered some nail clippers (with a guard so I can't hurt her!) Shall do a nail or two every day.
I have regular crises of confidence. This is the latest. I feel like I don't know how to groom etc. how often should I clean ears or trim nails. Which bits need scissors taking to them or thinning?!

BiteyShark · 21/07/2017 16:38

Wolfie I took mine to the vets the other day thinking his nails were too long and was told they were just fine Blush. Ummm should we be cleaning ears? I look inside occasionally to see if he has anything in them but never cleaned themShock. Grooming consists of me chasing him with a brush every now and again and then letting the groomer do it properly. The only thing I do consistently is brush his teeth but then I am not sure I fully get to the back ones.

What I am trying to say is whilst it always looks as if others know what they are doing I suspect they just muddle along as best they can like the rest of us 'trying to do the right thing'.

OP posts:
Wolfiefan · 21/07/2017 16:59

Her nails are definitely too long. She tippy taps around on the pavement. Her ears get mucky so I wipe inside with a baby wipe. Unscented of course!

BiteyShark · 21/07/2017 18:59

Ooo haven't really researched guards on nail clippers (ponders if that means they would be idiot proof enough for me to give it a go Grin).

OP posts:
Wolfiefan · 21/07/2017 19:02

From simply pets online through Amazon. 18:89 I think. It is a plate that slides over the hole so only the very top of the nail can be cut. In theory. Shall let you know tomorrow. Or not if pup eats me! Grin

Wolfiefan · 21/07/2017 19:03

BTW breeder said avoid guillotine ones. Get secateur type ones. That could just be as she's such a big girl though!

BiteyShark · 21/07/2017 19:07

Ah I see so you would only be able to cut the thin part of the nail. Yes let me know if you think they are fool proof as he already hates me when he sees the toothbrush so if I hurt him with clippers I would never be forgiven Sad
