Does anyone fancy a puppy survival thread part 3

Continuation of the support thread.... anyone is welcome whether they have new or older puppies, just want a chat or are battling with ongoing puppy problems.

I thought I would start this thread off as I am hoping it might be the last one I need support from as BiteyPup is now 9.5 months old and we have survived the early puppy months and his teenage antics seem to be subsiding. Still working on our relationship and recall but it's getting better and can finally see some light at the end of the tunnel (fingers crossed) Wine

Yes indy is bity when tired and it can be frustrating at times

bluetongue · 27/07/2017 09:03

Is that a puppy or a shark Wolfie Grin

It's so lovely to have you all thinking of me and Bluepuppy. I've been a bit under the weather so have got slack with posting. Just the winter lurgy but still it pleasant.

Things safe pretty much the same with Bluepuppy while ai get him started on Prozac and wait for it to (hopefully) take effect. He's still a whirlwind of brindle energy, counter surfer and nibbler of the ears of oodles of various kinds.

He's getting neutered in a few weeks. In an ideal world I would have waited a bit longer but all the day cares I take him to require them to be done by six months. As day care is vital to me being able to keep him I don't have much choice.

Cornflake so exciting about your new whippet puppy Smile You do realise that some of them are rather, ah, spirited as puppies don't you?

bluetongue · 27/07/2017 09:05

Dear me, sorry for the typos, wish we had an edit button on here sometimes!

Wolfiefan · 27/07/2017 09:08

Haha at spirited. Bloody moo just jumped up at me in play and grabbed me with her teeth. More than once. Cheeky baggage knows better. Glad I have a coat on! She's just excited to be running free but she's BIG and it hurts!!

Wolfiefan · 27/07/2017 09:10

She's now sulking as I'm sitting down so she can't bite my bum!

BiteyShark · 27/07/2017 09:20

BIG is an understatement Wolfie Wink

Cornflake I think getting dogs must be like children. After a while you forget how much work they were when little and think awww wouldn't it be nice to do it again and then when they are here you remember Grin.

GooodMythicalMorning I sympathise with the bitey stage.

blue BiteyDog due for neutering next month. I am not looking forward to entertaining him for 2 weeks at home with on lead walking only. I need to plan a truck delivery of Wine

Cocobananas nice to see you still around.

Skeleton is the pups cough better?

Waves to anyone else I have missed posting.

We used to shout 'be a tree' to the kids when we saw he was getting over excited with the kids. It worked! The stood still arms over chest and looked up in the air

Yokopup has become really cheeky, I thought we had had the teenage stage already but now I know we have it. At home he constantly roams looking for things to destroy. He has got hold of the kids football boots and worst my NEW lovely loafers with tassels and has bit off the three middle tassels Sad

towelpintpeanuts · 27/07/2017 10:27

Hey blue: good to have an update and of course we are thinking about you both :-)

Interesting to hear some of you are still having biting with the older pups - towel pup is pretty much not biting me at all now (5 1/2 months) but will still mouth at other people who are more exciting than me - I'd rather it was the other way round tbh!

We went on a lovely new walk this morning - on a little island in the Thames - towelpup had a fab time and was so good :-)

Remind me how old Yokopup is? Towelpup as a little dog started cocking his leg to wee at 4 months (madness, I was NOT ready!) so I'm not really sure when to expect teendom. I'm getting a bit of boundary testing on commands at the moment (sit? what that mean? I never heard of it...) - and a couple of delayed recalls for the first time, so am wondering if we are heading in (nearly 6 months)

BiteyShark · 27/07/2017 10:41

I think my pup was brilliant at around 5 months but 6 months and beyond we lost recall, sit etc.

Oh and my dog still pees like a girl dog. I think he spends too much time with the girls at daycare Grin

thanks everyone. I know it will pass (hopefully!!) but it is scary! Not helped of course by dd being autistic and not being able to control her reactions. Hence he goes for her the most.

Puppy can hear dd talking upstairs at the moment and keeps trying to sneak up to see her! He's not allowed upstairs yet!

interesting about the snapping when overtired - I'll keep an eye on that.

GooodMythicalMorning · 27/07/2017 12:05

Indy squats for a wee. Didnt realise they could do it differently! Just video called my dad so he could 'meet' the dog.

Wolfiefan · 27/07/2017 12:06

1805 stair gates are your friend! Maybe a puppy play pen too.

GooodMythicalMorning · 27/07/2017 12:07

1805 Ds is autistic, he's very rule orientated so now he understands the 'dog rules' he's getting there. He's much better at staying still than dd now.

SkeletonSkins · 27/07/2017 12:54

Boy doggos lift one leg to wee, it's so funny when they do it for the first time as they look shocked themselves!

We seem to have a break in the downpours so hoping to get out this afternoon to a secluded spot!

roundtable · 27/07/2017 13:18

Roundpup is 7 months old today according to her passport.

I think we're in the teenage years with her. Some selective listening especially if there's certain other dogs about.

There's a gang that she likes to bumble along with most days but there's one dog who she is a little whotsit with and her listening goes out the window. We're limiting contact with said dog as lovely as she is and seeing other dogs at the moment while the selective hearing persists.

I've noticed that roundpup mimics the behaviour of the dog she is with. If they're calm, she is - if they're playful, she is! At home she is fairly calm so I'm hoping that's what she goes with!

She's really come out of herself though. Then we first got her she would hide behind my legs when we were out on a walk if she saw other dogs and would shake and growl. Now she's gone the other way and thinks all dogs want to play with her. Grin

TitsalinaBumSquash · 27/07/2017 14:23

Sherlock has got covered in something white and sticky Hmm he's going to need his first bath.
No idea what it is but he ran through a bay bush and came out he other side covered in it.

We're doing really well with house training, no accidents yet. He's been to the vet and the vet is in love. Grin Sherlock doesn't yet weight 1kg so he's got some growing to do.

I would love to start training him with the basics but his 2 states are only ever, mad running around and sleeping.

Captainladder · 27/07/2017 17:08

Hello all, just had a read through and come on to say that things are going quite well I think... pup is very bitey but we are trying to distract and offer something else. Mornings especially when he is SUPER excited to see us are quite brutal! If he persists on the bityness of hands and doesnt make do with soft toys / chew toys he goes back in his crate and that calms him down. Hope thats ok to do...

Thanks for the picture of the exchanging things, whoever posted that! Very helpful. Hadnt realised that was how it worked at all, so have implemented that. The kids (6 and 8) are having a bit of a tough time with the dog, they want to play but then get freaked out by the biting and instead of standing still they hop about exitedly making everything worse! So we have a puppy trainer coming on Saturday so they can have a session with her (Will help us all I think!) puppy classes start mid august.
Its great having this thread :)

BiteyShark · 27/07/2017 19:22

Hi everyone, it's nice hearing how the pups are getting on.

TitsalinaBumSquash hope the white stuff washes off. We had to cut something sticky out of his fur once because it just wouldn't wash off.

To those entering teenage stage, have some Wine and Cake. I am hoping when mine finally decides he is a sensible adult I will stop comfort eating and finally get some health benefit from all the walking.

GooodMythicalMorning · 27/07/2017 19:33

Really bitey this evening, thought he was like it as had lots of energy but took him on a walk around the block and now he's zonked out. Could he be over tired?

BiteyShark · 27/07/2017 19:40

Mine was definitely over tired when he got like that. They are like little defiant toddlers refusing to sleep and getting all bitey.

Picking up lots of tips on here! This is a great thread!

Picking pup up on Saturday - very exciting!!

I have his 10 week jabs booked in - do I need to take him to the vet before then?

BiteyShark · 27/07/2017 20:10

TheAntiBoop I took mine to the vets a few days after I got him so they could give him a health check (in the puppy contract if any health issues were discovered by my vet I could return him. Not sure whether I would have but I still wanted him checked over by my vet for reassurance). This also gave me a good chance to chat to the vet and ask questions.

OP posts:
GooodMythicalMorning · 27/07/2017 20:12

Yes we had 3 days to get him checked in case we needed to return too.

TheAntiBoop · 27/07/2017 20:21

Thanks

I have vet dilemma

We have a vet round the corner. Not cheap but offers a puppy plan for first year vaccinations/health checks/flea and worm etc

But they don't use the same type of vaccination as the breeder so I found another vet that is a bus ride away to do it.

So now I don't know whether to stick with vaccination vet or use the nearer one which is quite expensive and the puppy plan only makes sense if it included these vaccinations. But then it is very close! What to do!!

Wolfiefan · 27/07/2017 20:26

Our vet didn't use the same lepto vac as breeder. They could order it in though. Worth an ask?
