Does anyone fancy a puppy survival thread part 3

Continuation of the support thread.... anyone is welcome whether they have new or older puppies, just want a chat or are battling with ongoing puppy problems.

I thought I would start this thread off as I am hoping it might be the last one I need support from as BiteyPup is now 9.5 months old and we have survived the early puppy months and his teenage antics seem to be subsiding. Still working on our relationship and recall but it's getting better and can finally see some light at the end of the tunnel (fingers crossed) Wine

I bought my puppy a little Kong Knots toy the day we brought her home, she's chewed and ragged it daily for five weeks now and it's still fine. It's the only toy that's lasted. I bought her the two larger ones a week after and they've also been chewed to high heaven daily but are still going strong. To hold, they feel ,flimsy and I wasn't expecting them to last long, and only bought as a good friend recommended them, just wish I'd checked online first as I got the two bigs ones on amazon for same price as the tiny one from Pets at home.she also has a sub a toy but it said on the packaging that it should only be used for supervised or interactive play, can see why as if she had free reign of that it would be fucked within days.

I've tried taking a pic of her ragging on the knots toy but every time she sees a camera she sits and poses :)

Also, my carpet isn't as filthy as it looks, it looks horrid on camera Blush

Meant to add, I have a mixture of hard and soft toys and rotate them every now and then. High price doesn't mean high quality though as I've paid more than I dare admit on toys that are broke within a day, and paid as little as £1 for others in Poundland that are still going strong.

GooodMythicalMorning · 25/07/2017 21:30

The Poundland ones are surprisingly good

Cocobananas · 26/07/2017 07:56

skeleton, one of our sofas is very elderly and minging really but DH fights to hang on to it so pup can come up there. Just been loath to encourage her because our last dog colonised the sofa and became very upset about being moved from it in old age when he became increasingly unreliable continence wise. Having said that she is currently snoozing on our bed, bungalow so no hope really😁
Jen and skeleton, gorgeous pics, love a black shiny looking dog.

BiteyShark · 26/07/2017 08:27

JenTheSprtacusPuppy you should see the date of my kitchen floor. Muddy paws prints all the time Sad. Cute puppy pics Grin.

I always create a calendar every year with pictures from my holiday but I think this year I am going to devote it just to BiteyDog.

Our sofas are covered in throws. Drives me mad as I'm constantly getting tangled up in the bloody things and sometimes I actually fancy seeing the sofa I took the time to pick because I liked it.But there was no way of keeping the dogs off (the dd's undermine every attempt by sneaking them up for a cuddle) so I have given in...
Puppy Lyra and big dog Bear are now getting on great-they never stop chasing each other around.
She is still coming to work with me as too little to Leave for long and now the dog walker says Bear is pining for her in the daytime Grin

towelpintpeanuts · 26/07/2017 20:45

Has anyone seen Blue recently? Wondering how she's getting on....

So: I popped in a potential dog grooming parlour with my anxious, easily worried pup this morning. He had a mooch around, played with a couple of the puppies; ignored all the weird noises (clippers/bath taps etc) ... and went to sleep whilst I talked to the owner. I felt like I had to keep saying 'he is really nervous, honest....!' He's booked in for a bath and dry next week (I've said to just wash one foot, as long as he has a positive experience, I'm happy to pay!) and we're going to pop in a couple more times to get him feeling good about the place. Wish me luck....

towelpintpeanuts · 26/07/2017 20:48

Sofas: towel pup has literally discovered that he can get up on sofas in the last 24hours and he thinks it's AWESOME. He also thinks cushions deserve everything that's coming to them, the cushiony bastards.

DH has been very firm on on no dogs on the sofa. I am totally up for dogs on the sofa. DH is away until next week....I am trying to be good and 'down' him , but my heart just isn't in it...!

BiteyShark · 26/07/2017 20:52

towelpintpeanuts good luck with the groomers. Hope they take good care of him.

blue was here a few days ago if I remember correctly. Hopefully with the time difference might get a wave off blue over night.

Sooooooooooooooooo, I've just started the process of getting in touch with the breeder we want our next puppy from Shock Grin

SkeletonSkins · 26/07/2017 22:45

I'm missing blue too as well as bluepuppy, hope all is going okay.

Ahhh how exciting Cornflake! Same breed again? Is that how things are going to go, we keep all getting puppies keeping us on this thread Grin

CornflakeHomunculus · 26/07/2017 22:47

Our youngest is nearly four now so it's been a while since we've had a puppy, at least by our standards Grin

It'll be another whippet and probably not for a while. The ideal would be the second half of next year but we'd take one sooner for the chance to get one from this particular breeder.

Cocobananas · 26/07/2017 22:48

towel, bath and dry is a good way to go. Slowly, slowly, catchee monkey and all that😁 Our pup went first for a brush and hello, then a bath and dry then a puppy clip. We also groom her every evening mostly a quick brush and remove grass burrs but I dry her paws regularly with a lot of jocularity and sometimes treats. She has gone from not particularly liking her paws rubbed to ok weirdo get on with it! Gimme a treat.

SkeletonSkins · 26/07/2017 22:59

I adore whippets so I am very jealous. I love their personalities. My first dog was a whippet cross and I'm fairly sure this guy has some whippet in him somewhere - he walks with straight legs in a very whippety way Grin so I'm very jealous. A heap of cosy whippets.

1805 · 26/07/2017 23:25

Hi. Can I join in please? I haven't read the whole thread, but we have an 12 week old Border Terrier. He is our second BT, having lost our first one 2 years ago aged 13 and a half.

Oh how I had forgotten about the puppy biting and snapping stage!! He is generally doing well, but our dd (12) is struggling to cope with him trying to assert himself. (snapping at our ankles and toes) Any tips?

Wolfiefan · 26/07/2017 23:28

Yay new puppies!
1805 your puppy isn't trying to assert himself. He's just mouthing as all puppies do. Divert onto a toy. Have a look at the files on the FB group dog training advice a a support for a puppy refresher!

1805 · 26/07/2017 23:41

Hi Wolfie,
This is more than mouthing. It's quite aggressive and boisterous.
Puppy classes don't start until end of august round here, but we're booked in!

The trouble with dd (autistic) is than she panics which just encourages him. Ds (15) gets it too, but can cope better. I have to say he is quite scary when he gets in these moods. I am generally confident around dogs, but I am a bit worried about this behaviour. We're at the vets tomorrow so I'm going to ask.

SkeletonSkins · 27/07/2017 01:08

They definitely seem to go through a crazy hyperactive stage where they will grab at anything and it can be overwhelming. Could it be linked to when puppy is tired? If you read back through this and the previous thread in particular you'll see that a few people found this happened when pup was overtired, much like a toddler! You can train pups to feel safe and relax in a safe space e.g. A crate but it takes work and time. Definitely have a look at the FB group suggested as there's lots on crate training.

It IS normal puppy behaviour and linked to play - they haven't learnt the boundaries yet! Definitely keep trying to divert to a toy and remember that the flapping clothes on a running child look a lot like toys when youre a young puppy who doesn't know any better (especially a terrier!!)

CornflakeHomunculus · 27/07/2017 01:26

Honestly 1805 puppies can be absolutely awful when it comes to mouthing, play biting and apparently "aggressive" behaviour. It's also totally normal for them to be utterly horrible!!

When one of mine was a puppy and got overly giddy he used to launch himself snapping at our faces Shock He was an absolute horror

I've always found the best thing to do is redirect them onto something they can bite and rag around. Fleece tuggies or stuffingless soft toys are brilliant for this as you can wiggle them on the ground enticingly. It is relentless at first and you're having to do it almost constantly (carry a toy with you and have them placed strategically round the house so always have one to hand) but it does work and the biting will stop. It's a normal (and necessary) part of puppy development and it will pass!!

Pre-empting his giddiest periods and doing a little training or a simple scent game can help take the edge off as well.

BiteyShark · 27/07/2017 06:59

1805 mine was a nightmare bitey pup when overtired. Although he is 10 months we had a full on day last week where he got no time to snooze, we got in sat down and he went straight to my trousers, mouthing and pawing them. I had to shove him out of the room for 30 seconds so he could calm himself down then he came back in and fell asleep. Even at this age I had to remind him how to behave whereas your pup knows no better until you teach him.

Personally I would have a code word that your children use when he starts. Then when they shout it you stop and go to the puppy immediately and try and distract with toys. If that doesn't work (and it didn't for us) then take him to an area where it is calm or he sleeps (we used a crate) to give him a short time out. We found when he was on crazy manic bitey mood we put him in the crate when he would start digging at his bed then he would promptly fall asleep and when he woke he was a completely different puppy, much calmer.

Wolfiepup was bloody terrifying when she was mouthing. Hurt me, DH and the kids too. It is absolutely normal I'm afraid. We ended up only having her round the kids on a longline or lead.

BiteyShark · 27/07/2017 07:29

I agree Woolfie, puppy teeth hurt Sad. I threw out some old jeans a few weeks ago that had holes in them from when he used to launch himself at me and hang on with his teeth Grin

OP posts:
Wolfiefan · 27/07/2017 07:34

I have holes in jeans and tops and walking socks and slippers and jumpers and there were also holes in me.

Cocobananas · 27/07/2017 08:07

I used to hold my hand still and say firmly, not me and then give her a toy. We were lucky I think that this stage didn't last long but when she was overtired or over excited Cocopup was always inclined to be naughty rather than bitey! Still is!
