Does anyone fancy a puppy survival thread part 3

Continuation of the support thread.... anyone is welcome whether they have new or older puppies, just want a chat or are battling with ongoing puppy problems.

I thought I would start this thread off as I am hoping it might be the last one I need support from as BiteyPup is now 9.5 months old and we have survived the early puppy months and his teenage antics seem to be subsiding. Still working on our relationship and recall but it's getting better and can finally see some light at the end of the tunnel (fingers crossed) Wine

I think mine likes whoever looks the most comfortable to lie on Grin

BiteyShark · 24/07/2017 16:37

Soubriquet good luck in the pet competition.

I have a question on food! When my breeder says the pups have custard at bedtime I assume she doesn't mean birds - what does she mean though!!

Also, what kind of blankets should I be getting? Will the kids old cellular blankets be a problem with claws?

BiteyShark · 24/07/2017 16:52

TheAntiBoop I just googled puppy custard as never heard of it but it does look like something people do (milk, eggs, yoghurt etc) Confused

Wolfiefan · 24/07/2017 16:55

Wolfie pup was on ready brek made with multimilk (like animal formula) with rusk crumbled in for supper! Shock

TheAntiBoop · 24/07/2017 16:56

Its like feeding a baby! I did Google and it seemed to be very milky scrambled egg but then other sites said they shouldn't have cows milk. So I'm just very confused!

I'll get some eggs in and ask when we pick pup up.

GooodMythicalMorning · 24/07/2017 17:10

I thought they weren't supposed to have dairy in general as too fatty but I could be wrong

CornflakeHomunculus · 24/07/2017 17:43

Puppy custard is generally something like evaporated milk and egg yolks. It's sometimes used in the very early days of weaning to make a porridge out of the puppy food they're being weaned onto. Once they're eating properly (which they should be well before eight weeks of age) there's no need to carry on with it and too much dairy can indeed upset their stomachs.

If you want to carry on giving something special for supper I'd just go for a little plain scrambled egg and not bother with the milk.

EmmaGellerGreen · 24/07/2017 18:05

Delurking to say that our pup used to have scrambled egg made with goats milk for supper!

BiteyShark · 24/07/2017 18:08

We give scrambled egg sometimes with BiteyDogs kibble but he was quite old when I started to give him this.

So at 8 weeks what sort of time do they eat? When they wake, middle of the day and then scrambled egg before bed? Or a normal dinner?

CornflakeHomunculus · 24/07/2017 18:33

At eight weeks they should be on four meals a day fairly evenly spread throughout the day. I wouldn't replace a whole meal with only egg as it's not nutritionally balanced on its own, I'd give it either as an extra snack or added to one of the existing meals.

I'd also have a bit of a gap between food and bedtime as they'll likely need to go out not long after eating.

TheAntiBoop · 24/07/2017 18:35

Oh thanks! I had a really good book that have me suggested timetables for the kids to eat as they grew. I need the same for the pup!!

Ahhh bit of a rubbish training session. The class was heaving for some reason - too many dogs and people really. Pup was a bit overwhelmed - he was okay but not eager and confident if that makes sense? A bit quiet. Anyway I did lots of fun little touches and sits etc and doled out the treats but he just didn't seem himself. Took him outside a fair bit too. He was really quiet. Then towards the end of the session, he saw something that spooked him completely and he started barking Sad I felt like everyone was looking at me. I took him out into a side room and settled him down, then brought him back in and he was fine. I couldn't work out at all what soooked him but he wasn't happy at all and even sausage wouldn't win him round for a while :(

He's still a bit quiet and not himself. Feel awful as I knew he was overwhelmed - I should have taken him home and trusted my instincts but I pushed him beyond his comfort level really and this was the result. Rubbish puppy owner alert today.

BiteyShark · 25/07/2017 03:40

Skeleton don't beat yourself up. It happens to us all, it so easy to forget they are like us and have good and bad days. Mine saw a flock of birds once at training and started barking and if you could not see him you would think he was a massive GSD and not a small cocker as he barks loud and deep. Everyone in that field turned and looked Blush. This week despite not caring before he started to shake and snuggled up to me when they fired gun shots and he never does that but this week he didn't like them and it took me 5 mins to get him back to his normal bouncy self.

Maybe give the class another go and if he is the same perhaps look at something else to do with him unless this was a one off with just too many dogs and noise. Maybe he was just tired tonight. DH and I always have a game of guessing what they say when they bark as a light relief.... maybe yours was ( quick everyone these tricks are boring, I know a great sofa where we can all watch crap tv. Whose with me? Let's go.....) Grin

p.s. I am up at this bloody early hour because BiteyDog keeps woofing in his sleep. He must have had 5 dreams tonight where he woofed.

Thanks Bitey. I'm now lying here wide awake worrying about kennel cough. He's been awake doing the really weird sharp sniffing thing? I would call it a cough but it was like he couldn't breath properly. Hopefully it was just something caught in his nose or something but of course now I'm lying here awake watching him sleep worrying!! If he does it again in the AM it's a definite vets visit.

BiteyShark · 25/07/2017 03:59

PILs dog had kennel cough and it was a really deep horrible cough. Sounded awful and he still coughs a lot despite now having the all clear. Fingers crossed it's just a 'cold' or hopefully an irritation.

I wish I could go back to sleep but between DDogs woofing and my DHs snoring I am now wide awake Sad

My mum's dog had kennel cough and it was a very distinctive coughing sound. Stupid idea but could there have been a bitch at or near the class in season? May explain his distraction? Hope all is ok this am.

SkeletonSkins · 25/07/2017 08:06

Sadly he's carried in with the snorting thing all night :( I don't think it is kennel cough but am absolutely worried sick. Got an appointment at 9.30 so everything crossed.

BiteyShark · 25/07/2017 08:12

Good luck at the vets. Might explain why he was 'off' at the training if he was feeling under the weather.

Soubriquet · 25/07/2017 08:29

My old dog Nero had kennel cough and suffered permanent damage from it.

If he ran about too much he would suddenly start hacking up this bad cough.

Hope biteypup is ok

Soubriquet · 25/07/2017 08:30

Not bitey pup sorry, skeleton pup

SkeletonSkins · 25/07/2017 10:05

Back from the vets, it looks like he's caught a respiratory infection from somewhere so we've got some meds and he's perked up a little bit now, eaten his breakfast. He could be contagious though so no training for a few weeks!

towelpintpeanuts · 25/07/2017 11:53

Awww, poor skeleton pup: hope the drugs kick in soon, but good news that it isn't kennel cough.

Lovely pup pictures - super cute Athena and Lexa!

So: I have a behaviouralist appt with 'my' behaviouralist today to start work on grooming (& barking at visitors: sigh!) - and have had a lovely reply from another local behaviouralist who runs a grooming parlour and says I'm doing all the right things, and we just need to work slowly and surely with him - so hoping to drop in with them tomorrow and start working through this thing. Honestly, it's just constant isn't it (or is that just me and my little terror?!)

We have had a few lovely walks the last few days - his recall is really pretty solid at the mo (I know we are heading into teenage-dom and this may all go pear-shaped!!) and it's lovely knowing that if I spot something I want him to avoid I can just call him off in the opposite direction. He had the most fabulous play with a pug the other day: I had no idea they could move so fast: it was impressive stuff!!

Wolfiefan · 25/07/2017 12:25

Oh no. Can you still get out and walk? Homeschool only for now. We are just back from training. She was awesome. Had a little play though and she was bleeding again.
Get well soon pup!
