Continuation of the support thread.... anyone is welcome whether they have new or older puppies, just want a chat or are battling with ongoing puppy problems.

I thought I would start this thread off as I am hoping it might be the last one I need support from as BiteyPup is now 9.5 months old and we have survived the early puppy months and his teenage antics seem to be subsiding. Still working on our relationship and recall but it's getting better and can finally see some light at the end of the tunnel (fingers crossed) Wine

at MonsterQueen 😊

Does anyone here use Tails? The dog food subscription that tailors the diet? Just wondering if it's any good or a big con?
Pup is currently on James Wellbeloved which is what he was on when we picked him up so I've not wanted to change it while he's settling in, is there a better type of food?

BiteyShark · 24/07/2017 10:33

I used allaboutdogfood.co.uk to pick a high scoring food for my dog. High quality doesn't always mean high price as usually you need less. That website gives you an indication of the cost per day for different brands.

Awww welcome to the world little pups!

Don't rule out local foods - we have a food we buy from a local pet shop and I think is sold to quite a few and rebranded so to speak? The original food is given a really good review on that website and it's approx 60% pure meat. It's also cheaper as it's not a big brand so to speak! So a little tour of the local little pet shops and a chat about the foods they offer might be useful!

SkeletonSkins · 24/07/2017 10:54

Awww welcome Athena! Absolutely gorgeous 💕

Hello, I'm hijacking the thread as the bit about food has made me question myself. We were told grazing is better for digestion, certain greedy breeds disallowed.

Roundpup has been out for an hour this morning and I've put out biscuits for her but I know she won't eat it until about lunchtime which is when she gets a bit peckish. She only ate breakfast for the first week of rehoming her, she gobbled it down as she had to battle with other dogs in her litter for food.

She seems to eat much more at dinnertime but will always leave a bit and come back to later (we eat late ourselves which probably doesn't help).

She's the right weight etc.

Now I'm questioning!

We do sit, paw, wait at dinnertime though.

We've had her for about 2 months now and she seems to have settled into this pattern of eating.

Her coat is so shiny now, it's nice to see her looking more healthy than when we first got her as she was underweight.

I'm used to Golden Retrievers which is a different kettle of fish food wise. Grin

roundtable · 24/07/2017 11:04

She's a couple of days off 7 months old I should have said. We've had her since 4 months so more like 3 months she has been here Shock.

SkeletonSkins · 24/07/2017 11:07

As always, do what works! We'd never be able to have a grazing approach as one of my dogs would happily eat his and the pups continuously until he burst! As long as the dog isn't overweight I can't see a problem.

BiteyShark · 24/07/2017 11:09

roundtable if it works for you then don't change it. My dog is a funny thing with food and we have always had a struggle getting him to eat (tried different foods etc). Leaving food out for him to graze would make him worse.

We buy food from a local person as I'm keen to support local business although they do deliver the food to your door. The biscuits are 80% meat. We had her on iams previously and when we were swapping her over gradually she'd spit the iams out if she accidently ate it. Grin

roundtable · 24/07/2017 11:15

Phew! I'll stick with what we're doing at the moment then.

isthismummy · 24/07/2017 11:19

Thank you BiteyShark and SkeletonSkins She's a very solemn little thingSmile I used to breed/show papillons and the pups were much more high energy.

She's probably just overwhelmed though bless her.

GooodMythicalMorning · 24/07/2017 11:35

Yes do what works. With Indy we have to do set meal times as its really really easy for Bulldogs to become overweight as they will just keep on eating.

roundtable · 24/07/2017 12:20

I've just finished an early lunch with the children as we were all hungry and she's still not eaten. No leftovers etc, she only has occasional dog suitable leftovers and they are usually boxed up and served with dinner.

I think she's just not too bothered until later in the day now she knows no one is going to eat her dinner if she doesn't eat it straight away.

I do wonder if she remembers anything from before. She's terrified of the car and is car sick although she'll jump in it herself now, whilst shaking like a leaf.

Supposed to be taking a 2 hour drive for a holiday and I'm considering finding out if the vet can prescribe anything. To stop the sickness and to calm her down.

Has anyone else dealt with a car sick dog? We've tried all different parts of the car, it doesn't make a difference.

Cocobananas · 24/07/2017 13:35

Sorry roundtable, didnt want to make anyone doubt themselves re mealtimes. As long as your dog eats the food you give her that's fine, I just have known a few owners who start to give only human food or chop and change around dog food in an endeavour to stop their dog being fussy when they have created the situation by not trusting dog to eat when it is hungry. Most dogs would wait for something even more tasty to come along if they don't eat what is put in front of them straightaway. They soon catch on that their owner is worried that they won't eat unless something else is offered. My SIL drives me mad, next step probably will be to hand feed from her plate.
Cute pups everyone.

Soubriquet · 24/07/2017 13:45

Got Lexa a kong today.

Haven't filled it with food yet but she's having a fab time nomming on it and jumping on the sofa, letting it go, watch it bounce off and chasing it Grin

roundtable · 24/07/2017 13:46

Don't be sorry, it's useful to see other people experiences.

The only time she bolts down her food is on Sunday Night Sardines (sad I know) and even then she leaves a bit to come back to later!

We're definitely in the teenage years - some very selective hearing when there's other dogs to play with sometimes when out walking...

Awwww Soub good to see her! She's fab!

Soubriquet · 24/07/2017 14:04

The hair has grown back nicely around her eyes hasn't it?

It wasn't mange it was bloody stress.

I have a bad back and get periods of time when I need to go to hospital for extreme pain relief and then laid in bed for a week unable to move. She won't walk for dh so didn't go for a walk that week either.

She got herself that stressed that her fur started to drop out. As soon as I was back to normal, it started growing back lovely.

I've just entered that particular photo into our local pet shop competiton. If she wins, I get a discount for a year there

roundtable · 24/07/2017 14:10

Oh that's sad Soubriquet. For both of you.

Hopefully she'll get used to walking with dh so it's not something for you to worry about when you should be resting and healing.

She's bounced back well though.

Soubriquet · 24/07/2017 14:15

She has. She's so frustrating at times but so funny too

Chihuahuas tend to bond to one person and I'm definitely that person.

She's happy to go to others but she is always conscious of where I am.

Unless there's another dog in the distance now..then it's suddenly she can't hear me Grin damn stubborn teen
