If this was your dog, what would you name it?

After years of wanting a dog (I grew up with dogs) I am finally approaching a time when it would be suitable to get one. I'm very excited as I've waited so long and things are finally falling into place!

I'm thinking of early next year and I have my heart set on a Black and Tan smooth haired daschund.
I have had plenty of time to research the breed and feel confident this is the right breed for my family.

The only thing is I'm unsure whether to get a dog or bitch, and I'm struggling with names a little.

So, this picture of a dog I found on google, what would you name him/her? Smile

The names I have so far are:

Male:

  • Pablo
  • Darwin
  • Walter
  • Arlo

Female:

  • Wilma/Wilmer
  • Minnie (I like it but too cutsie)
  • Martha

All of the names I come up with are met with raised eyebrows Blush
Any suggestions? Do you like any of my ideas?

If this was your dog, what would you name it?

I think you shouldn't choose a name until you have a dog lined up! You're expecting a future dog to fit to a long chosen name. The name should be chosen to fit the dog!

SmellyNipples · 03/07/2017 16:37

If you rescue a dog, it'll probably already have a name.

And you should always rescue. Buying a dog is unethical, selfish and lazy.

If I ever had the opportunity to name a dog, I would call a male dog Trevor and a female dog Deidre. Grin

I appreciate that! But the thread is just for some ideas that's all Smile

Agree to wait until you have the dog as may not fit your name or may already have a name but my theoretical dog would be Winston or Dot

MERLYPUSSEDOFF · 03/07/2017 16:41

There's probably a 'sausage dog' rescue centre somewhere. I quite like Dude.

(my kids love sausage dogs since Charlie and Lola)

qwertyuiop1234 · 03/07/2017 16:42

I will not be rescuing a dog, but I don't think it's unethical, lazy or selfish to buy from a reputable breeder and care for the dog and love it for its entire life!

I would say it's unethical, lazy and selfish to buy a dog on a whim and end up giving it away though. I've known people to do it and it's disgusting!

I had a name before we got our dog and he fits it perfectly Grin

Whatever name you pick make sure you are happy to shout it loudly across a field Smile

qwertyuiop1234 · 03/07/2017 16:45

I've just looked up a daschund rescue centre and it says they currently have a long waiting list because so many people are waiting to adopt them which has made me happy!

That is my worry Bitey Grin
I love Pablo, but I'd feel daft shouting it across a field Blush

Francie says DD.

I like Solo. Because Dachshunds are So Low. Geddit?

qwertyuiop1234 · 03/07/2017 16:56

Solo is brilliant Grin

Following the Solo theme , go with Hans . We met a lovely mini dachs pup the other day and she was called Kiki .

qwertyuiop1234 · 03/07/2017 17:15

Any thoughts on Pepper? Or Peppa?

I love it but my sons name may or may not be the same as Peppa pigs younger brother which potentially spoils it Grin

Hans would be a great idea but I'm sadly not a Star Wars fan!

I like pepper

qwertyuiop1234 · 03/07/2017 17:18

I used to love Wanda, is that terrible? My mum put me off it a bit but it seems all my ideas are a bit weird anyway!

MrsTerryPratchett · 03/07/2017 17:22

I like Piper for Scottish dogs but not German. Grin

Wanda isn't as good for calling.

Guiltypleasures001 · 03/07/2017 17:29

Rolo 😍

Apologies if you've considered all this already but you do need to be extremely careful when finding Dachshund breeders, particularly if you're going for a mini rather than a standard smooth.

Mini smooths have increased a lot in popularity over the last 10 years (the number being registered with the KC has doubled in that time) and unsurprisingly a lot of unscrupulous breeders are amongst those supplying that increased demand for puppies.

The shape Dachshunds have been bred into greatly predisposes them to suffering from spinal issues, most notably IVDD which affects approximately 25% of all Dachshunds. Any decent breeder shoulder should be screening their bitch before she's bred from, only using a screened stud dog and be breeding for less length of back/greater length of leg.

This site is an excellent resource on IVDD, including the screening programme and how to manage the lifestyle of a Dachshund to minimise their chances of developing issues. When it comes to the latter the main factors are keeping the dog as slim and fit as possible. UFAW have some good information on their site as well.

Prior to being used for breeding both mini and standard smooths should be DNA tested for Osteogenesis Imperfecta and Neuronal Ceroid Lipofuscinosis. Mini smooths should also have been tested for cord1-PRA.

I like Pablo Smile

Sybil x

ShmooBooMoo · 03/07/2017 17:47

I love Walter!
Winnie or Mildred for a bitch.

qwertyuiop1234 · 03/07/2017 17:53

Thank you for the information Cornflake, it's something I've read about and know to look for but the extra info is great.
Do you think Kennel club breeders are a good place to start, or can irresponsible breeders still find a way to get that label?

When the time comes I'm going to make sure I have a written list of questions to take with me when visiting a litter!

5OBalesofHay · 03/07/2017 17:56

Trevor or Dave

qwertyuiop1234 · 03/07/2017 18:05

Definitely can't go with Dave, we know about 9 Daves, we don't need to add to the confusion Grin
