We had a thunder shirt for an old dog who was nervous/aggressive - apparently, it works because of the constant pressure it puts on the dog. Unfortunately within a week of buying our dog ate her bed, had an operation to remove from stomach....hadn't quite recovered when she did it again, it took a long time for her belly to recover from being operated on twice so we never got to test the jacket out

Yokohamajojo · 14/06/2017 10:21

Hi all, I haven't written for a while but need to off load. This morning my lovely 7 month old teenager ddog managed to pull down a full box of 12 eggs from the worktop Shock has grown a bit more than I thought! He got hold of a broken one and ran into the garden! I managed to get the shell but he ate most of the content. It's not dangerous is it?

Other than that he is lovely most of the time. Back on the long line as his recall is dodgy when other dogs are around. With no distractions he is great, but just want to chase around other with other dogs.

Hope you get bluepup sorted! I am sure you'll get there x

bluetongue · 14/06/2017 10:25

Ha Yoko it's amazing what they can reach if they really want something Smile I've heard of some dog owners feeding eggs for a better coat. I'm sure he'll be fine.

BiteyShark · 14/06/2017 10:34

I have given mine boiled egg and he has eaten raw birds egg that he found on the floor. There was no side affects apart from eggy farts Blush

Soubriquet · 14/06/2017 10:45

Eggs are fine

Raw eggs are excellent for coat condition, scrambled eggs are excellent for upset stomach.

So no panic

Excellent, I am looking forward to a shiny coat and stinky farts then Smile

I was feeling better at work today after arranging for a trainer to come and see Bluepuppy. Then he lost it while I was in the shower and wouldn't stop barking and crying. Now I'm tears again. I feel like such a failure Sad

BiteyShark · 15/06/2017 09:34

blue I know it's not that easy but try not to take it personally. It's not about failing. Write down a list of all the good things bluepup does and pin it to a wall so you can see how far he has come. Try not to focus on the barking yet until the trainer has been when hopefully putting in a plan of action will make it seem less of a problem.

Flippetydip · 15/06/2017 11:03

Well done blue for getting a trainer. We've got one coming for Flipdog too. As I said not a puppy but still very new to us (2 weeks and 2 days :)) and we haven't dared let her off yet. I have someone coming next week Friday to do some recall training. I'm quite excited about it.

Was so anxious for the first week or so with her (dog not trainer!) but feel so much better and completely besotted now. Although the trainer on the phone told me this is probably the honeymoon period and she'll be a nightmare once the three week stage has passed! Nice.....

BiteyShark · 15/06/2017 11:13

Flippetydip get some yummy treats in for recall. I use hot dog sausages and cheese.

Flippetydip · 15/06/2017 11:30

Thanks Bitey - are hot dog sausages OK, I always thought things like ham and processed meat were too salty for dogs?

Her favourite thing so far seems to have been the two Victoria Sandwiches which I'd lovely made for the church fete. She had them both off the side 10 minutes before we were due to leave and there was just a small dusting of icing sugar round her mouth and on the floor to give any indication that they ever even existed. (I expected to see them again very soon out of either one of the ends of the disgraced greyhound, but no - she seems to have guts of steel).

I still have not learnt - I gave her some tinned mackerel this morning to see if we can do something about her ratty old coat. Half a tin, and I left the other half on the side. So yes, she had a full tin this morning....... How she didn't cut her tongue and nose to smithereens I don't know. I will be more careful....

BiteyShark · 15/06/2017 11:36

I get webbox hotdog sausages specifically for dogs Grin

Soubriquet · 15/06/2017 11:36

Recall treats need to be very high value

It needs to be ooooooo that looks better than running away

So hot dog sausages cut up real small are a brilliant treat.

Ooooh where can I get webbox? I'll have a look on t'interweb.

Thanks for the heads up.

BiteyShark · 15/06/2017 11:54

I get mine from Morrisons pet aisle.

BiteyShark · 15/06/2017 11:54

I think I have seen them in Asda as well.

BiteyShark · 17/06/2017 05:34

blue hope things are ok. Feel free to vent on here to us if it gets too much.

BiteyPup seems to be finding the hot weather hard. A favourite spot to lie down now is infront of our standup fridge freezer so he gets a nice blast of cold air each time we open it Grin. On the walk yesterday I had to take him via a small lake as he was panting hard to give him a swim to cool down. It was so hot he was completely dry again by the time we got back to the car.

bluetongue · 17/06/2017 09:40

You're such a sweety Bitey thanks for asking.

Bluepuppy has had vet appointment this morning and the day didn't start well. I decided that I needed to clip pup's nails so I looked like a 'good' owner. Of course silly me cut too far down the nail and blood went everywhere. Great.

He was very well behaved with the vet and vet said tome he never would have guessed Bluepuppy had an anxiety problem if I hadn't told him as he was very relaxed. Physically he's in perfect condition which is at least some good news. Vet really wants me to go through the Vetininary behaviourist, especially if I'm considering medication.

If the trainer thinks the same about the behaviourist I'll book next week. Shame I can't see her until August!

I was so exhausted today I slept all afternoon. I really hope I can enjoy my pup properly soon.

Today is cleaning day. Nothing like a stranger making a home visit to make you clean the house Grin

bluetongue · 17/06/2017 09:41

That should read tomorrow is cleaning day!

BiteyShark · 17/06/2017 10:00

I am too much of a chicken to do my dogs nails Grin The groomer or vets do them for me.

It sounds like bluepup is doing very well despite the one blip about leaving him. We had to go walking very early today as its very hot here. Much too hot for cleaning Grin

bluetongue · 17/06/2017 10:42

Good move with the nails Bitey. I thought that after clipping cat claws for years it would be easy for me. I was wrong Grin Plus, cat claws tend to only bleed a tiny bit if you cut them too short. Bluepuppy trailed blood all through the house Shock

My vet told me that a high percentage of Whippets in his practice have separation anxiety, I knew they were more prone to it than other breeds but not that it was that common. It's a shame because Whippeys are so great in every other way.

I admitted that I was not sure if he was the right dog for me and my vet didn't judge. He knows I'm not the kind of owner to give a pet up lightly. Hopefully it doesn't come to that. Mental health issues are a right bugger for people and pets.

BiteyShark · 17/06/2017 10:54

Yes I like my vets as well as they are happy to have a frank discussion without being opinionated. If you do have to wait till August for the behaviourist although it seems a long way off at the moment time does fly. We are having DDog neutered towards the end of Aug, unless he develops any behavioural issues that would delay it, and I keep thinking how soon that is coming round.

SkeletonSkins · 17/06/2017 11:01

Been a very busy week here but just thought I'd check in. Pups doing well although continues to bark at people when they visit the house which is frustrating. Going to go to a second flyball session today in an attempt to tire him out ha!

BiteyShark · 17/06/2017 12:13

Skeleton was wondering what you had been up to. I am tempted to try something like flyball but it isn't clear where my nearest one is. I can see teams but nothing to say how you join Sad

bluetongue · 17/06/2017 12:58

Quick question re walking times. How long should I be walking my 4 month old? I'm trying not to walk Bluepuppy longer than about 15 minutes at the moment as I'm worried about damaging his joints. I think maybe I'm being a bit conservative. We'd probably both benefit from longer walks.

I would have asked the vet but obviously with vaccinations, general checkup and discussing his separation anxiety it didn't leave time for anything else.
