Coco he isn't interested in anything on the walks now. Yummy food or new squeeky toys just doesn't have any appeal, not even if he is very hungry. I have backed off the recall training as he knows what it means but was choosing to ignore me so I am selective when calling him to try to avoid failure although I had to use it yesterday to let him know where to run back to as he had gone a long way. The positive bit is that walking off away from him without calling his name looks to be the one thing that is making an impression ( it's good to know he doesn't actually want to lose me Grin) and yesterday at the beginning it was clear he didn't want to run far in case I left him but he soon figured out that the paths in the forest make it hard for me to do that grrrr.

It's good to know you are back in the forest. Think I will avoid them for a bit longer for now Sad. I just remind myself that he is great in other ways and recall will eventually return with time. We are practicing sit with the whistle (hopefully to progress to a stop) when out walking which he is fairly good at.

Dotty I think normal means that they are lovely in lots of things but still driving you potty. Mine started counter surfing around then and they do know when they have something they shouldn't, mine looks ecstatic and runs off so I can't get it back Shock. At the moment he is fixated on my slippers, unless my feet are in them he runs off with them.

Cocobananas · 11/06/2017 08:04

Bitey, my girl is a greedy bugger, useful for recall. I only use squeaky ball in an emergency now for distraction but the whole ball thing has backfired on me because she has become growly and possessive over balls with other dogs😡 Now only play ball with her in the garden and keep squeaky ball in my pocket in case we come across deer or pheasants.
Dotty, think teenage hits with selective hearing and tearing off into the middle distance with you frantically running to catch up☹️ Cocopup is now a year old and lovely in so many ways, has never counter surfed, recall good unless playing a mad game with another young dog. My daughter is staying for a day or two and a month ago pup would be whining and pushing at her bedroom door at 7am, this morning she sniffed at the door and trotted into the living room with me and curled up on her rug. She will still steal gardening gloves though and have a crafty chew of my husbands work shoes if she can get to them!

Took Lexa to her first car boot today.

She seemed to enjoy it. Impatient cos she couldn't run about but still enjoyed it.

Took her for a good off lead walk afterwards

Feeling a bit disheartened after our gun dog training session today. I need to have a good rethink about the training I do on my own as I think I need to go back to basics. The problem I have is although my dog is my world I am not his Sad. I need to work on that.

Glad lexa enjoyed the car boot. The sun is out here and is a lovely day so hoping it was the same where you are.

Soubriquet · 11/06/2017 12:16

Yeah it's lovely here too

Breezy but warm

Sorry training isn't going wel

It's lovely here too. Plan to visit arboretum with the family later.
Bitey you will get there. I don't think I will ever feel mega pup is actually done training! Remember to give yourself credit for the improvement. However small. Last show mega pup didn't bite my arm even a bit as we ran round. And she actually let the judge look at her teeth. Like I say. Small wins!
Major success. Bought her a Grubber rugby ball. She played with it in the garden last night. When I took her out for a wee before bed she made a beeline for it. Picked it up and held it whilst she did a wee then tried to bring it in to bed! Grin

Cocobananas · 11/06/2017 13:58

Bitey, I think my pup is a few months older than yours...three months ago I was really fed up and not enjoying walks at all. It has been really slow going for us getting pup to focus and to see us as her source of fun. I think a lot of spaniels are hard work in this way because they appear to find their fun from everything and everybody and are very easily distracted. I still don't think I am the centre of Cocopups world either despite the sausage treats, the training, the games or the cuddles. She has calmed down though, is very obedient in the house and I am hoping age may do the rest😏

BiteyShark · 11/06/2017 14:14

Thanks for the encouragement, it is appreciated as feeling a bit down as I look at the mountain to climb. As you said Wolfie its the small victories. I could just kick myself with the training as I can see how this has happened and because he doesn't focus on me it's making it hard to progress. I don't want to work him as a gun dog but if I don't tackle this right now I won't be able to control his hunting nature whilst we are out.

He sounds very similar to yours Coco as he is wonderful in the house. I did get a lot of good advice today but I need to actually do it everyday and back to square one in the garden. God this dog owning malarkey is bloody hard work.

Jenny70 · 11/06/2017 14:29

Bluetongue, another Oz owner here :) Sorry pup's been struggling when you're out... I know a few people here that limit outdoors and I swear Molly stays inside the whole time, despite having a dog door - except at night, where she likes to night-stalk (and probably eat slugs or something gross).

Our current dilemma is the chewing of anything soft, toys, beds etc. Bought two beds and both destroyed within half hour of giving them to her... fluff all over the floor. Example A attached. Sigh.

But good on toileting, recall on walks improving to point of being fairly good, biting (toys aside) OK. Diet is still bit tricky, she loves all food, but seems to get upset stomach easily (and vomits). Makes training hard, as treats are usually rich/fatty which seems to disagree with her. But overall going good.

BiteyShark · 11/06/2017 17:12

Let's play the game of trying to work out what DDog might have been eating based on the non organic material in his poo Confused. I was with him yesterday and today and I am still puzzled to what rubber like material he ate.

Soubriquet · 11/06/2017 18:35

How on earth is she comfy?!

It can't be nice with her neck at they angle Confused

We have been to a first birthday party this afternoon. All Cocopups siblings, well six out of nine of them including her, plus mum, all the owners and some friends of the breeders. I was not sure thinking it could be carnage and thinking that mum would not be bothered by pups one year on. Was right, she wasn't but still friendly well behaved dog and pups all played like mad because they are all a similar age and size. All pups seemed happy and healthy and all owners doted on them so all good. Liver cake birthday cake and doggy bags to take home with treats. Breeders are one offs and not experienced and my girl is no way in this world a pedigree but they wanted to see how the pups were faring and have been in regular email contact throughout the year. I was really proud of my girl as she doesn't come into contact with young children that much and was perfect around several today although to be fair I think other pups to play with were the main attraction!

BiteyShark · 11/06/2017 20:31

Jenny70 DDog has a sensitive tummy but affects the other end. I tend to stick to low fat type treats but it has been trial and error. We were fortunate in that he would only attempt to eat his bed when he was in his bitey overtired mood when young but we still avoid anything that has zips on them as they are too tempting.

Soubriquet she looks so sweet and I guess it must be comfy. DDogs favourite position is on his back with his legs in the air.

Cocobananas I bet it was interested seeing how each of the puppies have grown up. All the puppies apart from DDog had been chosen by 3 weeks old and I think his 'boring' markings meant he was still available and I always wonder how his size and temperament compares to his siblings.

Cocobananas · 11/06/2017 22:18

Yes, pups all varied in size a bit. Our pup was the chunkiest of the litter and she still was today, one other female quite a bit taller than the others and the lone male pup very handsome. Most have had a few clippings and the brindle markings in the black and chocolates has really come out. Cocopup and one of her sisters are the only ones who have kept their thoroughly blonde apricot coats although I realise I need to take pup for more regular haircuts....we call her the mobile mop and she certainly looked a bit shaggy today!

bluetongue · 12/06/2017 02:12

Hello to Jenny in Oz. Molly looks very proud of herself Grin. Sadly I don't have any advice about beds. Your photo could almost be of my place except swap the bedding innards for bits of paper and cardboards. Even our floorboards look similar!

I'm going to try leaving Blupuppy alone today for a short while with the phone videoing. It's a bank holiday so might as well make the most of it (for the Queen's birthday would you believe!),

bluetongue · 12/06/2017 05:52

Three separate people told me today the Bluepuppy Is the most outgoing and confident whippet they'd ever met. He also didn't care about bikes, kids on scooters and being patted by random adults and children. I guess I must be doing something right.

We were on the lookout for fellow pointy dogs and saw three greyhounds, an Italian greyhound a borzoi and a wolfhound cross Smile

thesunwillout · 12/06/2017 09:08

Blue you must be proud, you are a good owner. it's nice to get out and interact and you feel quite proud. Sun Dog pooped on the bloody stairs. was trapped by the cat, she's got teething poo too. Oh and last night she stole and ate a muffin and the paper. She did it so fast. Bloody thing. am worried about the chocolate chunks.

BiteyShark · 12/06/2017 09:30

thesunwillout I think with chocolate it depends on the chocolate (milk, dark e.g. Cocoa content), the weight of the dog and the amount they ate. A quick phone call to your vet with that information would let you know if you need to worry or not as there is a formula to work out how much is toxic or not.

AmIAWeed · 12/06/2017 10:14

Yeah, a friends dog stole and ate a box of chocolates. The vet was able to reassure her regarding the amount eaten and weight of the dog...
Her dog was drinking lots, throwing it up, pooping lots and the main concern was dehydration as opposed to kidney/liver damage.

We had an ok weekend with Daniel. At one point Saturday the husband and I had such a row it ended with my husband saying he was going to rehome him. We both stomped about doing housework, took Daniel to the beach and agreed its just hard work and he isnt going anywhere.

Sunday was first day of puppy training, my arms hurts so much today from holding his lead so he's at my side :/

BiteyShark · 12/06/2017 10:25

AmIAWeed it is bloody hard work. I am amazed that anyone with young children has the energy to bring up a puppy as well as I struggle with just DDog.

I can't wait for the old faithful dog to appear Wink.

AmIAWeed · 12/06/2017 11:56

The trainer claims just threatening to rehome him twice in a week is pretty good going and usually, it's much more! They run classes 3 times a week and he was exhausted after so I may well take him to every class going.

My Mum and Dad got a puppy when I was just 3 months old, right now I am convinced my Mum and Dad are idiots!!! The dog was my best friend mind, we were inseparable so maybe they just have a lot more patience than I!!

Soubriquet · 12/06/2017 12:23

Dh had a bad night with Lex last night.

Kept him awake all night by going nuts. Legging it around with everything she could get hold off.

Poor dh was knackered this morning.

She's been out for a good long walk this morning and is still as nuts as a bag of squirrels.

Currently sleeping....but I bet it won't last.

OP posts:
BiteyShark · 12/06/2017 12:30

Soubriquet mine used to go nuts when he was overtired and had to be forced to sleep (in his crate). He used to whine a bit then do the digging at his bed inside the crate before crashing to sleep. I can't remember whether you use a crate or not but is there any way to force her to 'calm down'.

Soubriquet · 12/06/2017 12:37

We do use a crate yes but the door stays open on it and she takes herself off to bed a time night.

Interesting theory about over tiredness though....might have to look into that

OP posts:
BiteyShark · 12/06/2017 12:44

Even now I can tell when mine is fighting sleep. He starts trying to chew the side of his bed in the lounge then throws it about. A quick shove in his crate for 5 mins and he calms down and literally goes back on his bed in the lounge and falls asleep.
