What the hell is this? Yuk pic attached for the squeamish

DDog has been out of sorts for a few days. He's been licking his leg but has arthritis and I thought it was that. I've just checked him over and found a large growth at the top of his leg, the size of an old 10p. Does anyone have any idea what it might be? Poor DDog Sad

Abscess? Hard to tell from the photo whether it's full and needs to be drained or whether the dog's already popped it and is now "cleaning" it. Pop to a vet and get it cleaned/drained if necessary?

Yes, I was thinking it was an abscess too. Definitely full. Is this something to be worried about?

Looks like an abscess to me. If it is, ask your vet about medical grade manuka honey to help the healing process once it's been drained. Get antibiotics and all the other necessary bits too, it's just manuka honey can aid healing a lot.

Yes to manuka honey, I had a rabbit that was prone to abscesses and always used to have medical grade in the cupboard. Poor boy died a couple of years ago so I don't have any now but yes, it is good stuff. Will get some tomorrow (as well as a vet appointment!)
Poor DDog looks so sorry for himself Sad

Go to your vet asap. My girl had an abscess on her belly, it was massive. Popped the day before she was due to have it drained, we ended up in the emergency animal hospital and she was there for 3 days. It was awful when it popped.

Definitely get it properly drained - the dog incessantly licking it will pop it and they think they are "cleaning" it but 9/10 they cause an infection to spread.

Oh no Pink, is your girl ok now?
He's asleep now, but he's really not been himself tonight, I'm so worried. Will call vets in the morning and get an appointment.

Our dog had one that burst - wow it was impressive!!

He's much brighter today, probably because I let him sleep on the bed with me last night and he's not usually allowed on the bed!
Vets this evening, will update on how he gets on.

It's not an abscess, it's a lump Sad
Vet has done a biopsy, results back on Tuesday. Whatever the results say he'll need surgery to have it removed.

Hey OP, just checking back in. I've been through this twice with dogs so am here for any support. They're incredibly resilient things I promise. How old is he?

Thanks Bra. He's a rescue so not totally sure of his age, I think he's 12.

The vet is confident that even if it is worse case that the lump has a small root iyswim so should be able to remove any nastiness. I hate to wish away the weekend but Tuesday can't come quickly enough!

my 13yo lurcher had a similar lump (but much smaller) on his knee joint.
after seeing the vets and biopsy/xray - it was diagnosed as a chronic infection and 6 months later he still fine (after antibiotics) although a small red swelling is still there. He does not limp nor does it bother him. It was definately not cancer

Glad to hear your dog is ok Ollie.

I don't know if it's connected but he came in from the garden the other night and his front was soaking wet, I couldn't figure out why. The fur which was wet is all matted now and trying to prise the matt out with my fingers there was a grass seed, I wonder if he's got something like a seed or thorn or something in his leg and it's got infected.
I'm trying to think of best case scenarios.

If this has come up quickly (I'm guessing you'd feel any slow growing lumps when you stroke or groom him) then it could be a granuloma.
When there's an irritant (like the thorn/grass seed scenario) and the animal does its best to remove it , they lick until the tissue form into granulation tissue (which is repair tissue but then it keeps growing because it can't repair due to the foreign body)

Guess he'll be sleeping on your bed again tonoght ? Just to keep a close eye on the old boy Grin

70, you could have a point there. He's having a good old lick now and he is licking where the lump is. I thought it was lower down but now I know about the lump and watching him properly it makes sense.
I hope that is what it is
The thing is, I've spent weeks training DDog and DDog2 not to jump up on the bed or the sofa, if I let them both on the bed again tonight we're going to be back to square one.
Like I really care Grin
