My Puppy has been horribly attacked today. So shaken up.

Took my 12 week old cavalier out with DD to the beach this morning. Puppy was on its lead when a dog not on a lead just ran up and attacked it. Just bit hard on its nose and kept shaking and shaking my puppy. I was shouting for the owners to help and trying to get it off but they didn't do anything. I kicked at their dog and lifted by puppy up by his harness but the other dog jumped at me and just kept attacking. They were in their 60s. I got the dog off once and it went for and attacked my dog again. Their dog also bit me.

They wouldn't give me their details which makes me think this dog has done it before. But I got a photo of them and their dog which another dog walker took. They then rushed down to the sea and tried to wash all my dogs blood off their dog .

I was so scared that the dog would also bite my daughter. I feel I should have demanded more details from them. But the man only put the dog on an extendable lead and it was still snapping at us and I felt I just had to get away to protect my daughter as he clearly couldn't control his dog.

My poor puppy it at the vets it has a broken leg and the other dog has bitten right through its palette. I've had a tetanus and the nurse prescribed me antibiotics.

I'm so shaken up and feel so guilty about my poor little puppy. I don't know what I should of done though? I just can't get over a seemingly well to do couple just leaving me on the beach with a bleeding hand, carrying a terrified child and a puppy pouring blood.

Oh, OP,

How terrifying for all 3 of you. Am so sorry.

You've absolutely no reason to feel guilty; you did everything possible in the circumstances to protect your pup.

You also, of course, had your DD's safety to consider, and did extremely well.

What utterly irresponsible, selfish and downright nasty owners of the attacking dog...Thank God the witness dog walker did intervene and help.

Hope you, DD and puppy can get the support to recover from such a shock xx Flowers

The dog in the picture looks to have a black ear or patch so very unlikely to be a Samoyed. It's not really the correct shape either, i have owned them. Samoyeds are strong willed but not known generally as sharp or aggressive. If it grabbed and shook the puppy i would lean towards some kind of terrier cross breed.. that is how they tend to kill , i would expect a larger breed to generally bite at the neck or throat when attacking.

TheWoodlander · 30/03/2017 23:45

God how awful for you OP, it's my worst nightmare, being the owner of a very silly cocker spaniel. You must have been in complete shock, please don't blame yourself.

Echo the other responses here - hope you find them. I just can't understand people that let dogs like this loose. I witnessed 2 horrific dog attacks as a child - one on our family dog, a labrador, who was all right due to her sheer size, and one with 2 stranger's dogs at my uncle's house (his neighbour's dog and one walking past, I think). The latter - I have never seen so much blood. My uncle picked up the wounded dog - after the attacking dog had released it, which took some time, as it was a pitbull type whose jaws locked - and there was blood all over him. It haunted me as a child.

Blackfellpony · 31/03/2017 06:23

It looks like some sort of medium sized terrier cross to me, probably a mix of a few things. The patch is probably a brown ear much like a JRT.

To me it looks fluffier/has stand up tail as it's puffing itself up trying to make itself look bigger and more intimidating. I wouldn't say it's a Samoyed from that photo.

WaitrosePigeon · 31/03/2017 08:43

It's not a Samoyed. It's a terrier type cross more than likely.

LordRothermereBlackshirtCunt · 31/03/2017 13:34

How is your pup doing today, OP?

JustSpeakSense · 31/03/2017 20:41

@PearMice how is your pup doing today? Flowers

Hello, Our puppy had his surgery today and the vets said it went really well. He has had reconstructive surgery on his mouth and face and pins put on his leg. They said he seems bright and was eating and drinking this morning before surgery. He was still sleepy afterwards though when DH spoke to them but they said that was to be expected and his signs were good.

The said he is still wagging his little tail!

We put a post on facebook and other local news sites so see if anyone recognised the dog and owners and we have had the most amazing support. I'm so very proud of where we live today. The response and kindness of friends and strangers has been overwhelming and I'm so grateful to them

We have had a couple of really positive leads from it which the Police were following up today. So hoping to hear back from them soon.

Glad to hear puppy is doing as well as can be expected. Hope the police find them and throw the book at them.

honeyroar · 31/03/2017 22:21

Good news all round. Fingers crossed..x

ReginaGeorgeinSheepsClothing · 31/03/2017 22:31

So sad to hear of similar stories m, our poor pup was also attacked in similar manner, I ended up on meds because of it and shes now very dog wary- bizarrely unless she's out on a joint walk with my parents dog- I wonder if he makes her feel safer?

Northernlurker · 31/03/2017 22:40

Poor puppy. My grandparents were walking their cav and the two which belonged to my aunt once and were attacked by a terrier. It went for all three of the spaniels and they had an awful time getting it off. My grandma said she would never have managed it if my grandad hadn't been there. He had to be pretty rough with the attacking dog and fortunately there was a fenced area which they were able to reach which protected them. Cavalier spaniels are lovely dogs but absolutely no match at all for an aggressive dog, even the adults, let alone a puppy.

fourpawswhite · 31/03/2017 22:52

That's a terrier type, without a doubt. So pleased you have had positive news today, this is just awful. It makes me sick. And that's as a breeder and owner of terriers, massive hugs for you.

JaneEyre70 · 31/03/2017 22:55

So glad your little pup is doing well. And lovely to hear that you've had so much local support. FB can be very helpful in situations like this.

Coverup890 · 31/03/2017 23:01

Glad your puppy is doing well. My dd (12) was attacked by a dog not to long ago she had asked the man if it was ok to stroke he said yes and it went for her. She had to hit it to get it off and all he said was "ah did it get you" the police took it really seriously.

MiscellaneousAssortment · 31/03/2017 23:05

Oh I'm so sorry. What an awful thing to happen. I hope you and yours are ok and recover in time.

I hope the owners are found and dealt with. Disgusting behaviour,

Jumpolining · 31/03/2017 23:06

So glad your pup is on the mend. Do you mind saying which beach? Need to spread the warning. Cheers.

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 31/03/2017 23:11

You poor things, I'm so sorry, what a horrible experience. I hope your puppy pulls through ok and your poor dd isn't too traumatised. What absolutely shits to bugger off and leave you there. Really knocks your faith in some people. We met a couple like that, nice looking middle aged couple with a snarling snapping dog on a lead. We walked past and ignored them only for them to let the bastard thing off the lead a few metres down the lane. Obviously it came straight for us. Went straight for my beautiful lab and would have got hold of him if I hadn't booted it up the arse. I literally got my foot underneath it and propelled it away. The nice looking middle aged couple did absolutely fuck all. Never said a word. The man managed to grab its collar. I hissed through clenched teeth 'GET THAT DOG ON A LEAD!' I was so angry.

LordRothermereBlackshirtCunt · 01/04/2017 10:33

Just out of interest, I wonder what would happen if the OP didn't have insurance and couldn't afford expensive vet treatment. This is going to cost thousands of pounds. Those reckless bloody owners really need to be pursued so that this doesn't happen again.

MargotLovedTom1 · 01/04/2017 10:42

Absolutely horrified to read this - I really hope those bastards are tracked down. Much love to your little pup and hope he makes a full recovery.

foofooyeah · 01/04/2017 10:52

What a horrific thing for you all. I am glad your puppy is doing well.

OnceMoreIntoTheBleach · 01/04/2017 10:54

I love the power of social media for these things! Fingers crossed they find them, and big gentle hugs for your puppy 🐶

MimsyBorogroves · 01/04/2017 10:57

Hope you hear from the police soon, and that you can have puppy cuddles.

hmcAsWas · 01/04/2017 11:27

Just read your update - so glad pup is doing well. I hope those leads the police have got come to something

ThaliaLuxurySpa · 01/04/2017 11:32

Sounds like your brave little pup's doing well. So glad to hear. May he recover as comfortably and speedily as possible...

Hope your daughter's getting over such a shock, too?

And that the police search tracks down that awful couple ASAP. Public liability, the both of them, with such behaviour Angry
