My Puppy has been horribly attacked today. So shaken up.

Took my 12 week old cavalier out with DD to the beach this morning. Puppy was on its lead when a dog not on a lead just ran up and attacked it. Just bit hard on its nose and kept shaking and shaking my puppy. I was shouting for the owners to help and trying to get it off but they didn't do anything. I kicked at their dog and lifted by puppy up by his harness but the other dog jumped at me and just kept attacking. They were in their 60s. I got the dog off once and it went for and attacked my dog again. Their dog also bit me.

They wouldn't give me their details which makes me think this dog has done it before. But I got a photo of them and their dog which another dog walker took. They then rushed down to the sea and tried to wash all my dogs blood off their dog .

I was so scared that the dog would also bite my daughter. I feel I should have demanded more details from them. But the man only put the dog on an extendable lead and it was still snapping at us and I felt I just had to get away to protect my daughter as he clearly couldn't control his dog.

My poor puppy it at the vets it has a broken leg and the other dog has bitten right through its palette. I've had a tetanus and the nurse prescribed me antibiotics.

I'm so shaken up and feel so guilty about my poor little puppy. I don't know what I should of done though? I just can't get over a seemingly well to do couple just leaving me on the beach with a bleeding hand, carrying a terrified child and a puppy pouring blood.

Oh god I thought this was going to be about my dog. I took her out for a walk today in a field we used to think was safe for her to have an off lead run in as it's empty and easy to see other dogs coming into with enough time to recall and clip her lead on. Sadly it's not as safe as we first thought. I was just recalling her back, and she was on her way back, as I saw a dog enter the field when another dog came from under a fence and they went for each other. I was mortified. Luckily both dogs were ok as was the other owner but fucks sake it gave me a fright. She's NEVER going off lead again no matter how safe the area looks.

I'm so sorry you went through what you went through and I hope the other owners are caught. No one deserves to go through that.

clakster · 30/03/2017 19:28

I feel your pain op-my dog was attacked as a pup and i was so frightened i nearly passed out-i still get flash backs these days 4 years on.so many areshole dog owners- i am fed up with dodging them when ever i walk my dog.My dad made me a stick and i always take it with me- if nothing else it makes some dog walkers think twice about letting there dog off its lead. i knew walking a dog would be this stressful i would of never had a dog and my dog is my world.

PonderLand · 30/03/2017 19:31

That's shocking. The owners should be ashamed of themselves.

I was walking my parents puppy a few years ago (on lead) and another dog - American bulldog fully grown (on lead) pulled his owner over to us whilst I waited for them to pass against the verge. I told him to keep going as his dog was too big for my puppy but he kept saying he's friendly blah. He bit my dog on his side and pulled him up in the air and shook him for what seemed like minutes. I also didn't know what to do and just shouted at the owner. Thankfully my dog had a thick coat and the teeth didn't do much damage. My dad had to pick him up on several occasions and dogs still went for him.

We found once he got neutered that other dogs didn't react aggressively to him anymore, he also made a full recovery mentally and loves other dogs again. I'm however still wary of big dogs or owners who say 'he/she is friendly'.

Is your dog a male OP? I'm wondering if it was an un-neutered male which attacked yours? For some reason a lot of dogs attacked/snarled/barked at my parents dog until he was neutered. He must of given of a really threatening scent to them. Luckily most owners just looked shocked and held their dogs back etc. I can't believe they walked off and didn't give you any details.

OCSockOrphanage · 30/03/2017 20:04

I can only sympathise. It was an awful attack and you are completely right to refer it to the police and the dog warden. I agree with the suggestion that you tweet pictures asking witnesses to come forward. Everyone who has a dog lives in terror of something like this happening and happily, it's not very normal.

PearMice · 30/03/2017 20:07

It was the other dog walkers idea about the photos. He was great but had his own dog with him so I think also probably wary of getting too close. They owners didn't react at all really except to try and hide the evidence. It seemed like it took forever for them to put his lead back on. Then they put him on a fucking extendable lead anyway so he could still reach us.

I feel awful about not forcing them to give me more details. I'm terrified it could hurt some one else's dog or child but I felt at the time their dogs teeth were so close to DD' s face I just had to get her away and they wouldn't answer my questions. I was also scared it would finish my puppy off if it got it again.

DH just back from the specialist vets. He has broken his front leg in 2 places and has a cleft palette type mouth injury but they think he will recover. The insurers have said they will pay out but I don't think it will cover it all. I feel so guilty he's only a baby and I couldn't protect him.

That sounds terrifying. I really hope the police track them down. What utter bastards.

PearMice · 30/03/2017 20:10

I'm not sure what type of dog it was. It looked very innocent it was white with slightly curly fur. It looked like a kind of giant westie as it came up above my knees. It had pointy ears and a upright tail.

PossumInAPearTree · 30/03/2017 20:12

Don't feel bad about any of it. Not your fault. You couldn't prevent the attack and afterwards you were rightly ensuring safety of your dd and puppy over trying to force details off them.....which I doubt they would have given.

Please do a big social media campaign...people will recognise them. They should be made to pay vets bills and compensation. More importantly they need to be made to muzzle their dog in public and never have it off lead again.

Your poor pup is likely to be traumatised by this. I would advise getting booked into puppy socialisation asap but explain to the class leader what's happened beforehand. Puppy needs to meet friendly puppies in a safe environment asap. My dog was attacked when young, nothing like this, she was never even bitten. Just pinned down. Two years on she is still very scared of other dogs and if approached by an off lead dog has a tendancy to bolt unless I intervene.

HmmOkay · 30/03/2017 20:14

You did really well. Your dog would be dead if you hadn't intervened. Seriously. You did that and you protected your daughter also. You should be proud of yourself.

Don't feel bad about not forcing them to give details. They probably would just have run away anyway or given you false details anyway.

You protected your daughter and your dog. It is no wonder that you are shaken up but you couldn't have done more.

hmcAsWas · 30/03/2017 20:15

I am so sorry that this happened to your pup. It must have been dreadful. I wish him well for a full recovery

Unfortunately quite a few adult dogs dislike puppies - they generally confine themselves to snarling though. Like a previous poster said, it tends to be worse for intact male puppies - I remember my dog got some flack until he was done

I really hope the police track down these awful dog owners.

ArseyTussle · 30/03/2017 20:21

This type of thing, OP?

My Puppy has been horribly attacked today. So shaken up.
WatchingFromTheWings · 30/03/2017 20:21

I'd be getting the pics on social media, as many local Facebook pages as you can find. Also send the pic to local papers. Someone must know these people.

PlayOnWurtz · 30/03/2017 20:21

Yes do NOT blame yourself for not getting more details. Today has taught me things happen so quickly all you can do is protect yourself and your dog and from a distance ask if everyone is ok and move away. The shock of it all is awful and you had far more important things to worry about than their details.

DearMrDilkington · 30/03/2017 20:27

What absolute fuckers. You did so well getting the other dog off your puppy, well done! Let's hope the police find them soon, people like that shouldn't own animals.Angry

I really hope your puppy makes a speedy recovery and I hope your dd isn't too shaken up. Must have been horrible for her to witness.Flowers

LionSock · 30/03/2017 20:33

I'm so sorry this happened to your puppy. I have a puppy and this would be my worst nightmare. You did everything you could. What bastards those other owners are. If my dog had done that, I'd be mortified and would have gone to the vets with you and offered to pay. Facebook can be an awful thing but for things like this it's brilliant. I'd definitely start a post and get your friends to share it. I hope your puppy recovers soon. Please let us know how he gets on. X

PearMice · 30/03/2017 20:33

We had already met with a dog trainer last week so I will contact him for help.

Can I put the pics of social media without jeopardizing the police investigation? I've asked some friends who work in useful places to try to find an address with the surname they gave me which is a bit unusual. DF is going to try the local pubs/ hotels/ shop keepers tomorrow with the name and photos and stake out the beach.

Flowers for you
Football for your little pup xx

PlayOnWurtz · 30/03/2017 20:34

Speak to the investigating officer. They may put them on their forces page anyway if you ask (I've seen similar on our forces page)

LionSock · 30/03/2017 20:36

Have you also taken pictures of your puppies injuries?

Good idea about going to the beach with the pictures as they have probably walker there before so hopefully someone will recognise them.

RedBugMug · 30/03/2017 20:41

yes, speak to the police if you can use social media.
maybe send pictures of dog and owners to vets in the area?

Floralnomad · 30/03/2017 20:41

Go in all directions from the beach and see if any shops have CCTV that you could view to see if they walked past either before or after the attack , that might narrow down where they came from . I'd also stake out the beach for a few days and see if they reappear . Hope your pup gets well soon and hopefully if you find them they will have to foot the bill .

GlitteryFluff · 30/03/2017 20:45

What arse holes.
Hope the police find them and puppy recovers well.

needastrongone · 30/03/2017 20:46

I am so sorry that this has happened to you and your poor puppy.

My puppy was attacked when he was 7 months and the other dog broke his leg too, weeks and weeks in recovery and we thought he might have to lose the leg as there is a piece of bone that is still loose in his leg. So, he will definitely get arthritis in his leg at some point. I was screaming and trying to get the other dog off too, kicked it and it let go long enough for the dog to let go but my puppy ran into a corner and it attacked again.

Just to reassure you, my gentle little soul is timid and always will be, but still loves other dogs. He eventually snaps if the other dog is totally impolite and continually gets in his face (and the crap owner says 'he's just being friendly'), but that's the extent of his concern about other dogs.

I cried buckets at the time and was so angry and shocked and hurt, especially as he has the most gentle loving nature, but he seems to have recovered.

I'm so sorry OP, this has brought up some memories. I hope you get some further action towards the owners and your little pup is okay. xx
