my beloved girl dog is now 17.
We've been together 16 years.
Her back end is going, so incontinence and collapsing happening
I know she's on her last lap
I have a kind and wonderful vet
I do the nursing and clearing up, but I can't get my head around losing her
She has good days and bad days
Today has been not good and reality is hitting
I get up every day and put on my suit , drive to work, and do a responsible professional job and even laugh but am dying inside.
Love you so much Meg darling.

Ah bless her. Your vet sounds fantastic and dong a great job at keeping her as stable as possible. No suggestions re the meds I'm afraid (I am a cat person really sssh don't tell anyone!) - your thread has just drawn me in with the love you and Meg have for each other. As for expanding waistlines, I reckon she is allowed at her age, don't even ask me about mine after a week's all inclusive cruise!Blush
Take care Meg and Meg's lovely mummy and good luck with the medicine!

Wordsaremything · 04/09/2016 22:24

Hello creeping and posie! It's Meg here ,

creeping oh swoon cheese and steak !

Globe trotting posie - Did you have a lovely time ? I hope so. Was there chicken? Grin

I live with three cats, one of whom is my very special friend.

My Mum is their slaveHmm

But I love her anyway.

Hello Meg fans! I'm delighted to say she's been on top form the last few days. No tremors, no toilet accidents, no confusion.

A very elderly lady yes, who approaches life at a steadier pace than formally, but still alert and happy. I've taken some video of her to show my vet so she can see how she's moving, supporting herself to wee, and eating with enthusiasm.

I feel a twinge of embarrassment that I've started this thread in such drama and desperation, and people are sharing their sad stories to help me. I hope her recovery ( however temporary) isn't too painful for people to read about.

At the moment I can imagine her as a grand old lady being asked by a very new health care practitioner if she knew the name of the current monarch, and giving them a Very Withering Look.

Yay! Don't feel embarrassed in the slightest, you needed support at a difficult time and Meg has pulled through the worst of it for now at least - excellent newsSmile
And now of course we have all fallen in love with the grand old lady! I admire her for her strength and spirit, and you for your devotion to your lovely old girl.
Best wishes to the both of you, and the occasional update request please!

This thread made me cry - Meg is so absolutely gorgeous. Her beautiful nature shines out of her face. X

My dog has just jumped on the sofa with a bone in her mouth. I know I have to chase her off, but I can't bring myself to do it right now. It's cold and windy outside and I'm so grateful she is young and healthy and cosy inside with me.

Big kisses to your darling girl.

MuttsNutts · 08/09/2016 17:52

Don't be daft - I'm sure everyone on the thread and lurking are just pleased at how well she is. I don't get on here as much now I'm back at work but I have this thread on my watch list so will keep checking back to see how she is.

Keep up the good work both of you! x

Wordsaremything · 08/09/2016 20:01

Oh thank you all! koala I think those things too but to have someone else say them makes my heart sing!

Here she is on her bed with her favourite toy - she's had that blue ring all her life!

Awww. She really is one of the sweetest little dogs I have ever seen. Just the dearest doggy eyes. You can see she feels calm and loved, cosy in her bed with her blue ring.

Give her a gentle neck scruff from me, the old darling. X

My old boy is 13 plus & declining. He started having mini-strokes last Christmas, got medication to support his circulatory system, and although he continues to have his episodes, he recovers. He is clearly declining, but has a good appetite & still enjoys life, although he sleeps lots, very deeply, & sometimes wakes up confused.
Your Meg clearly has quality of life, so keep at it, you will know when she does not ( loss of appetite, loses interest in formerly fun activities, complete incontinence); it sounds like she has her "turns" but recovers. You two are doing fine & are a joy to read about!

mineofuselessinformation · 15/09/2016 21:32

Words, my ancient cat sat and watched the telly for the first time since I've had him (over five years now) the other night - Warhorse FYI, maybe he likes horses! Grin
It's funny when they do new things, even at their old age, isn't it?

Wordsaremything · 17/09/2016 21:23

Hello All

It's been a hard week. Lots of things have gone wrong domestically all at the same time, as often happens.

Then Meg started regressing again to the extent I rushed her to out of hours vet. I panicked when I picked her up from dog lady as she was holding her leg oddly and was in discomfort. I thought she could have broken it, but all ok, thankfully.

However the tremors have returned, so we're tinkering with the dosages of her epiphen again. Apparently dogs can accommodate to the extent that the symptoms start to return.

Her appetite for chicken and a toddle round the neighbourhood 'reading' her wee Mail via every lamp post and corner seem undiminished.

However the fact that the vet is dispensing her meds in two week batches has not gone unnoticed Sad
