Cavapoo vs Cavachon

Hiya, really just curious to know if anyone has had much experience with either of these breeds? I'm particularly interested what health problems have come up. We are thinking about getting a puppy, I've done my research, but I'd like RL opinions.

They're not breeds though - they're crosses (mongrels) and you can't predict which characteristics they will inherit from each breed. I wouldn't get any kind of cavalier, pure breed or cross

I have a King Charles Cavalier and he has never had any health problems (touch wood!)
They can be prone to heart problems but our vet said if he got to age 3 and hadn't developed a heart problem then that was a good sign. He is 8 now and a lovely dog. They are such a lovely breed. So laid back. I'm not sure about the mixed breeds but thought I'd share my experience of a King Charles cavalier.

I have a cavachon. She's lovely, very good natured, very calm. She's 2yo and No health problems. There's a good fb page called cavachon UK which is worth seeking out. There's also a cavachon from health tested parents fb group where all puppies patents have had the recommended health checks.

Cross-breeds, not breeds op. So no way of being sure what you're getting.

These made-up names for cross breeds really grate on me for some reason!

OP, you've comitted a cardinal sin. You are not allowed to mention "designer" crossbreed dogs on MN. People start frothing.

Wither either cross you need to be extremely careful that the CKCS parent has been properly health tested before being bred from.

The CKCS parent should have had their hips scored, eyes tested annually, MRI scanned (especially if they're being crossed with a bichon as there have been diagnosed cases of CMSM in bichons) and DNA tested for EF and CC/DE. They should also be following the breed club MVD scheme; both parents should be free from heart murmurs at 2.5 years and their grandparents should be free from murmurs at 5 years old.

Unfortunately the chances of you finding someone breeding CKCS crosses who does all the health testing are very slim indeed. I've never yet seen a breeder of crosses who bothers with the MVD protocol or MRI testing.

A quick google suggests that there have also been cases of CMSM in toy and miniature poodles as well so in that case I wouldn't touch either cross with a bargepole unless the CKCS parent has been MRI'd.

My cavachon was from health tested parents on both sides. The CKCS line was tested clear going back 3 generations. Adorable dog. Best thing we ever did. He's 3 now and totally fine.

Sorry my mistake ....yes they are crossbreeds and essentially mongrels. Not really my choice of dog, I'd have a rescue but DP just won't entertain the idea.

That breeder doesn't look too bad at first glance Disneydog but there's no mention of using the MVD protocol (only that individual dogs aren't showing signs of heart murmurs), they appear to have bred from CKCS dogs younger than 2.5 years old (not recommended as heart issues frequently start showing up at that age), their poodle stud hasn't been DNA tested for vWD and they don't appear to hip score at all.

The problem is many breeds of dogs have some sort of health problem. Some more than others admittedly. We have chosen the two crossed breeds for their temperament..and they are obviously super cute. I'll check out that website, thank you

Yes but ckcs dogs have utterly dire health problems as a breed, and poor breeding over and over means there are hardly any not affected any more. It's really sad and although i agree they have lovely temperaments I really wouldn't get a puppy unless its parents were fully health tested.

Both breeds are extensively puppy farmed. And the crosses are a very useful way for KC breeders to get extra litters out of their pedigree bitches, bypassing rules meant to protect bitch welfare. CKCS are a walking health disaster and while there are many breeds with health issues, why pick the one with possibly the greatest number?

Loads of puppies like these get dumped on many tears.

Oh look, the anti-cross breeds are out. How funny that we are also talking about cavaliers that are a breed, are recognised bynKennel Club and have overbred to the extend of being known for bad health problems.

OP, just make sure you look for health checked dogs. & responsible breeders.

Gosh you're brave to post this here. But as you've been brave I will be too.

I have a three year old cavapoo. From an excellent breeder. All health checks done on mother and father who live with her and paperwork up to date. I waited for almost a year to get this puppy as I wanted to get her from this breeder. She has been one of the very best things that has ever happened to me.

She adores agility and is now kc registered for agility and heel work to music because we enjoy going to shows.She's very fast and adores steeplechase. She is very intelligent which has made training a delight and relatively simple although I'm not fast enough! She needs a good hour of off lead walking each day but the rest of the time she sleeps on the back of the sofa.

Downsides are that cavapoos can be jumpy and licky and over friendly with other people. I've largely trained it out if her but it has been hard work at times. She is also mainly poodle. You have to look hard to spot her cav mother in her.

She's never had any health problems at all. We've only ever visited the vet for annual boosters. But it really is worth asking around about bredeers and seeing the mother and father as this does help. We visited at least four breeders and researched many others before we found one we were happy with. Good luck.

Taking two breeds with health problems and crossing it doesn't mean you avoid the health problems! All it means is that you run the risk of having problems from both sides. The only way to avoid problems is to systematically breed them out which only responsible breeders do because it costs a lot in terms of money and time.

In addition you cannot predict temperament traits in cross breeds. If you cross an intelligent but energetic breed with a calm but disobedient breed you are as likely to get an energetic and disobedient puppy than the other way round.

A health check is a visit to the vet to check there is nothing obviously wrong with the dog. What you want is health screened parents which can involve, depending on the breeds, x-rays, eye tests, heart ultrasounds, genetic testing, etc.

By the way I am not anti-cross breeds, I am anti-pay-for-cross breeds because it is a ridiculous con.
