I think my old girl is on her way out

Last night she seemed very poorly, unwilling to walk and generally withdrawn.

This morning I came down to find she'd been sick in her basket and had weed herself. I encouraged her out to the back garden, she staghered badly getting out there. Then she had some nasty diarrhoea.

She's now lying on her (clean) cushion, asleep. Taking her to the vets at 9. She's 14 in August. I think she may be on her way out Sad. My poor, lovely old girl.

I feel for you. I lost my boy last summer. The terrible sadness will be helped a little with the knowledge that it's the right time. I held his paw and stoked his ears as he went.

campocaro · 20/03/2016 07:18

*stroked...

confusedandemployed · 20/03/2016 07:32

It's funny, I've dreaded this day for so long but I know, without a shadow of doubt, that I would rather let her go now because I can't bear to see her in pain.

Do you have anyone to come with you?

confusedandemployed · 20/03/2016 07:50

I do, but I think I'd like to take her on my own. It was just me, her and her brother for many years before DH and later DD came along. I think I want to be alone with her.

Her brother is still here BTW, seemingly in full health. I'm worried how he will cope - should I take him with us or leave him home, do you think? They are litter mates so have quite literally never been apart.

Sorry was away from computer-guessing you are there now. Not had experience about what to do re siblings hopefully vet can advise. Thinking of you.

confusedandemployed · 20/03/2016 09:25

Thank you. At vets. They are going to scan her but I don't think I want to leave her here, because I don't want her last days to be anxious and sad. I would rather let her go now. I just don't know what to do.

How are you doing confused?

hellhasnofurylikeahungrywoman · 20/03/2016 10:26

It's such a hard decision isn't it? I remember going round and round the houses when our old boy was at this stage.

confusedandemployed · 20/03/2016 10:44

They found a mass so I put her to sleep. She was ready. I'm so glad it was a fairly easy decision. The last thing I wanted was to have to drag it out.

Thanks for your support. I'm OK. Very sad, but very very happy that I did right by my beautiful girl.

I am so sorry. I did think of you at nine this morning.

I would rather my dog had no days of pain. I think you did the right thing. Xxxxxx

confusedandemployed · 20/03/2016 11:32

Thank you. It really is a huge comfort to know she didn't suffer longer than necessary.

So sorry but right choice. Hugs.

pigsDOfly · 20/03/2016 12:53

So sorry to hear this.

So wise to let her go sooner rather than make her hang on.

I know when the time came for my 2 old cats I was able to take comfort from the fact that they didn't suffer a long period of pain and they went with dignity.

Wish you well.

So sorry. It's not easy is it? You absolutely did the right thing, it was the last act of love you could do for her. Flowers

bishboschone · 20/03/2016 14:31

How sad but you did the right thing . I had brothers ( cats ) who were very very close . We lost one 2 years ago very suddenly ( a stroke , he wasn't ill . ) I brought a small bit of his hair home for the other brother to smell . He did and seem to have a moment of acceptance and he is still going and has coped much better than we expected .

CreepingDogFart · 20/03/2016 16:10

Sending deepest sympathies- you did the right thing though. Flowers

WhoaCadburys · 20/03/2016 16:21

Flowers Very sorry.

honeyroar · 20/03/2016 20:18

So sorry. Hope that you and your other dog are ok. I admire you for how you coped. I hope that I can be so strong when I need to be for my dogs.

confusedandemployed · 20/03/2016 21:04

Hello. Thank you so much for your condolences. I have spent the afternoon drinking and trying not to cry. We had people round and I was happier doing this rather than cancel and mope about.

I plan to get absolutely wasted and then go to bed with her brother who feels pretty lost. Then tomorrow I am taking him for a nice walk on the beach. My beautiful girl. I love you so much.
