friends dog missing - please help

Friends dog ran off in cheadle (abney hall park) at 3:30, they've been searching since but had to abandon as its dark. Rang 101 and got out of hours dog warden no, is there anything else they can try? Dog is microchipped too.

Post on Facebook. There is a lost dog page I believe.

Get it on Facebook with a photo of the dog and ask everyone to share your post, remember to make the post public. Post it to Animals in Manchester (also on Facebook) they're fab at advertising lost dogs and their followers share their posts too. Good luck, really hope they find him.

Brilliant, have told her about both those Facebook sites, we are very worried as the park is very close to the m60 and a main train line. Plus it is freezing out. Fingers crossed.

Join doglost.co.uk and get the dog registered with pics and details of where/ when they were lost, and heavily poster local area, poor wee thing - hope the dog turns up very soon.
Is the dog chipped/ wearing a collar with tag/ contact details/ approachable (all important things to put on a poster, along with a good pic)

Sorry, missed the chip bit - that's good... Just one thing: lots of owners forget to update phone numbers/ addresses so make sure all info is up to date.
Could you call the local dog warden (through the council, I think) in case the dog has been picked up (it's the law to report to local dog warden when a dog is found, I believe)

Yes out of hours dog warden has been contacted, the area they were in is not their usual walking area, but it was only a matter of minutes before they noticed he was missing and he usually comes back, calling and searching provided nothing unfortunately. I am worried this will be a sad outcome

Does the dog have road sense, good hearing and sight etc? My friend lost his dog (not much road sense, newly adopted as a rescue and new to the area) in a large park that was near to a busy motorway and a train line, and had a big swampy pond. He had to give up after calling her after searching for hours. He went back first light and found her looking dazed on the main road... I hope your friend has a similar success. I would advise friend to go out (before road get busy...hopefully, being a Sunday, there won't be as much traffic) very first thing and search/ call the dog's name, put up posters locally where the dog was lost. The dog will be tired, hungry, maybe a bit spaced out and anxious...advise her to take food/ treats/ lead (all common sense but easily overlooked when you're a wreck!) and may behave out of character.
Does the dog know the route from their home to where they were lost (or, are they driven in the car?) I'm wondering if the dog has put its scent down and may be able to make it home. Keep us updated, please.

Put it on Twitter too. as a general tweet and also on Lostbox. The main road/train line aspect is a big worry I agree. Can they call on as many friends as poss to keep patrolling the area? I really hope he is found soon. Dogs usually try to get back to the last place they saw their owners, or to the car if they came by car, so that would be where to keep a particular eye out. I would walk the streets asking passers by to keep an eye out too, as it is so terribly cold.

Same for my friend (it was like his dog had been beamed up...there one minute, gone the next)! Don't lose hope. Like I said, doglost.co.uk is a great resource so get your friend to register and also heavily poster the area where the dog was lost. Tell friend to return to the spot where they first noticed the dog missing as this is where the dog is most likely to go (as it's where they last saw their owner). Try to get your friend to stay positive. Dogs are natural survivors. There's a good chance he/ she will turn up. Prayers for a safe return very soon!!

Is the dog long-haired? That might help against the cold a little.

Thanks all, have told her as he's a Patterdale terrier hopefully he's just got stuck down a hole somewhere, apparently road sense, sense of danger not great, not an old dog though. have also said to take torch, treats and a blanket with them tomorrow am so they can wrap him up if they find him. Will update when hear further.

Leave a well worn garment with the owners' scent on it, along with some food and a bowl of water wherever the dog was last seen. They are probably missing each other; the dog might find it in the night and decide to camp out in that spot.
Second the advice to be back there again as early as possible in the morning.

This happened to us, our dog ran of from a walk and was missing overnight. we facebooked it and went back early the next morning with loads of posters to put in local shop, pub etc also spoke to every single dog walker we saw and that's how we found him as a dog owner we had previously spoken to found him and told us where he was, cowering under a tree cold and very hungry!!!

Have they told the nursing home in Abney Park that the dog is lost? It might go there in search of food and people?

I'm not familiar with cheadle area but have let her know.

Awww... Even though it's dark, now is a good time as it will be quiet. Taffy will be more likely to hear. The suggestion to put an item down with the owner's scent on where he was last seen is a good one too. I hate to hear of dogs going missing. His owners sound great though... there's a big chance he'll be found safe and sound! Even if he's not located tonight, tell your friend to put some food down around the spot they last saw him too (if he comes back to the spot and finds it, it will provide him with some sustenance and protection against the cold. Great to see him on doglost.co.uk (a wonderful resource!)
