And my heart is absolutely broken.
He has been in my life 14 years. He is 15 and a half now.
He's been arthritic for a long while and now has kidney problems too I think from the meds.
He is suffering and it's time.
But oh my heart is shattered.
He's my best friend and we have been through so much.
I don't know what I'm going to do when he's gone.
Just needed to tell someone who 'gets it'.

I'm so sorry and will be thinking of you today

Whenever we have lost one of our dogs or cats over the years it has been unbearably painful at the time but now when I look back I remember all the love we shared and all the funny and cute things they did and I smile.

Shitmyhairdressersays · 29/05/2015 08:24

Thank you everyone for thinking of us.
I've been up since 5.30 when he got up so I could take him outside.
I've been telling him how much I love him and thanking him for being in my life and for everything he's done for me.
He is deaf and I'm worried he won't know how much I love him because he can't hear me. Sad
DH went to work at 6 as usual and when he looked at me this morning I could see he'd been crying which is not very like him. He's been very resolute about the whole PTS thing because Scraggy has been in pain for some time and on a lot of meds. I know he loves him but hadn't expected him to be so upset and he is very much 'my' dog.
He is going to leave a gulf in our lives and I know I will always have a 'Scraggy' shaped hole in my heart.
The vet is coming around 11.15 and I feel sick but I know this has to be done.
He is sleeping at the moment and I keep looking at him wanting to hold on to every second he's still here.

You do that love. Sit with him and stroke him.

And we'll all be here. I have been thinking about you since I got up. It's not often I think about MN threads when I'm not on MN itself, but your love for him shines through and has really touched me.

Wolfiefan · 29/05/2015 08:33

He does know you love him. Every kind thing you have done, your scent and your closeness will comfort him.
Better a day too early than an hour too late. You are taking away his suffering. You will suffer afterwards but he will not be in pain.
You will remember the good times.
Sorry to add this but how old are your children? I would avoid saying he died in his sleep as it can make them scared to sleep. Sorry x

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 29/05/2015 08:44

Just hold him and stroke him. He'll know.

EdwinaLIzzard · 29/05/2015 08:50

Oh Myhairdresser, my heart breaks for you but you are doing the kindest and hardest thing anyone can ever do for their beloved pet.

I had my cat put to sleep last year, she was 19 years old and I had to make that decision knowing it was right for her but unbearable for me. The vet was wonderful, I held her as he sedated her and then he injected her and she just slipped away - it was so peaceful as if she was asleep. She knew she was loved and the last thing she would have felt was me stroking her.

It will be hard, but your old boy will know that he is adored, he will leave this world in his own home with the person he loves most. Our dogs give us unconditional love and I truly believe he will be content to drift to the next life knowing that you are there with him.

Thinking of you and sending you strength

Ducky23 · 29/05/2015 09:01

My heart breaks for you, it's awful. You aren't crazy at all for being so heart broken. My lovely boy randomly passed in his sleep 2 weeks ago, he was young and there was no signs of anything being wrong. He had been through so much with me.

I bet he's had a wonderful life with you and has known nothing but love. I'm not very good with words but I got some amazing support on here.

Will be thinking of you and your lovely dog x

ineedaholidaynow · 29/05/2015 09:04

Thinking of you today, with tears in my eyes Thanks

pinkbraces · 29/05/2015 09:45

Im here, holding your hand to. Scraggy will know how much you love him. Will be thinking of you and your lovely dog.

piebald · 29/05/2015 09:59

Oh i am crying now too. We will all be thinking of you this morning. Hold onto the fact that you are doing the best thing for him, it is not fair to let him carry on in pain. It is the last good thing you can do for him and you are letting him be at home which is the best way xx

iHAVEtogetoutofhere · 29/05/2015 10:04

OP.
I am so sorry you are at 'this place' right now.
I had my beloved spaniel PTS nearly 9 years ago.
I howled in the clinic after and found it very hard for a long time.
I actually went back to the Vet the next week and cried on them Blush and they told me I'd done the right thing.

I hope you and your beloved 'Scraggy' have a peaceful time this morning.

He will KNOW you love him. Mine was deaf, and I told him, and I believe he knew (I put my mouth up to his poor sewn up earholes so he could feel the vibration of my speech).

He will pass in your arms - what better place to be? .x.x.x

frostyfingers · 29/05/2015 10:25

It's so so hard and I feel for you and your family. You know you're doing the right thing but it still really hurts. Treasure all your memories and the happy times and know that you've done the best by him. Give yourself time to grieve properly - l lost my beloved pony at the end of last year and howled for days on and off, but gradually the sadness is replaced by memories of better times.

WienerDiva · 29/05/2015 11:26

Sending lots of love to you today. It's the hardest decision to make for our pets but it is for their benefit. He'll have no idea and will absolutely know how much you love him.
