Our beautiful, beautiful springer has cancer - aggressive growths affecting the soft tissue and bone in both her shoulders. She's nearly 13 but she's always been so active - six weeks ago she was chasing squirrels in the park like a pup. She developed stiffness and a limp and the vet said it was arthritis, tried her on various anti-inflammatories and they all worked for a few days and then stopped. She got much worse this week and they took her in for x-rays yesterday because she's had autoimmune problems in the past and they thought it might be IMPA, but they found a soft tissue mass that's eating into the bone on one shoulder and a mass on the tip of her shoulder blade on the other side. Both are too high to be operable and we wouldn't put her through major surgery anyway. She's at home with Tramadol while they send the scans and biopsies to a specialist for a second opinion, but it's obvious what it is really. She's barely eating, sleeping most of the time and very very sore when she moves - we're having to carry her outside to go to the loo. If the tramadol doesn't get on top of the pain over the weekend we will be saying goodbye on Monday. She's the most amazing character and we all love her so, so much - don't know what we're going to do without her. Our other dog is going to be bereft, and our little boy has never known life without her.

These pics were only taken at the end of October....

Bless you am sat here in tears reading this, I dread this day coming as a dog owner :(. Sleep well Megan, and you too Spider. x

LoofahVanDross · 22/12/2014 20:54

It is very very sad I know, especially when you are left with one dog looking for his friend. We had to choose another pup after 2 weeks of hte other dog mourning, then had a few weeks wait to bring him home, and it really perked our oldie up. Too soon, obviously to be thinking about that for you. Megan sounded a true springer. Absolutely lovely x

punter · 22/12/2014 21:02

Gosh really feel for you but you did the best most unselfish thing you can do for her. Lovely dog and lovely memories.

CakeUpWall · 22/12/2014 21:14

RIP lovely Megan. Huge hugs to you. Springers are the loveliest dogs on the planet; we are so lucky to have them in our lives, and she obviously had a wonderful life with you. x

handcream · 22/12/2014 21:25

Remember she will be waiting for you at Rainbow Bridge....our old girl is ok at present but cannot hold her bladder overnight anymore. We just put towels down and she is ok in herself but I am dreading it when the time comes

Tootyfilou · 23/12/2014 01:10

Oh dear Spider, only just caught up with this . I was so hoping you would have better news. We lost our darling boy to histocytic sarcoma in Febuary. It was such a shock fit and well ( we thought) one day, PTS 3days later.
My heart truly goes out to you and your family. It is such a horrible shock. She looked such a beautiful girl. There are no words really... I am missing My boy so badly still. You obviously gave her a wonderful life. Un- mumsnetty hugs xx

Ohfourfoxache · 23/12/2014 01:27

We realised yesterday that we had a bonus year with her - I've been going around telling people she was nearly 13 but when we looked at her date of birth on the insurance forms, she would actually have been 14 in May.

It is very hard in the early days, too quiet, empty beds etc. Time is a great healer, and almost 14 is a very good age and long life for a springie. She wouldn't want you to be sad. She is running free, no pain now. Take comfort in that. Thinking of you x

ellenjames · 23/12/2014 13:46

don't worry about the hair, you will be finding it for years! thinking of you xx

reallystuckonthisone · 23/12/2014 18:32

I am so sad for you. In tears reading your update. But be proud that you did the right thing for her FlowersFlowers

handcream · 23/12/2014 18:38

14 - wow. Springers are puppies for a very long time, they always look like they are having a jolly good time!

EasyToEatTiger · 23/12/2014 23:04

Big hugs to you. We lost a beloved dog this time last year. More big hugs.

My heart is breaking for you

KlepTheHallsWithBoughsOfTronic · 23/12/2014 23:14

It's bad I know, and you don't want it to have been so, but I think you did the right thing by her, and that's all you can do. I am sorry for your loss.

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 24/12/2014 00:08

So sorry spider. Just been through this with our old spaniel. They do break your heart don't they? They're so worth it though.

I've got a little Christmassy thread going if you want to pop over and share some memories there too. All are welcome.

Don't hoover up that hair until you're ready. Flowers

DramaAlpaca · 24/12/2014 00:39

spider what an adorable springer Megan was. We lost one of our lovely springers at the age of 14 earlier this year, so I understand completely what you are going through. They are the most wonderful dogs & Megan clearly had a great life with you. So sorry Flowers

KittieCat · 26/12/2014 22:14

Only just caught up on the thread. Incredibly sorry to hear the news, you did what all of us to hope to at the end: make the right decision at the right time for our animals.
I hope you can take some comfort from that and that in time you can think of her with a smile in your heart rather than tears in your eyes.

KiwiJude · 27/12/2014 01:36

So sorry spider, I've just seen this and cried all through reading it. RIP Megan, and lots of hugs for her family.

spiderlight · 27/12/2014 18:20

Thank you - so grateful for the support on this thread. We had to go and settle up with the vets today and drop in her insurance form. Ticking the box to say the illness had resulted in her death was hideous. Took our other dog for a walk afterwards and he managed a few smiles, but he's still heartbroken and I feel as if one of my arms has been cut off.

This pic came up on my Timehop yesterday from Boxing Day last year. Sums her up perfectly - even at nearly 13 she'd never quite gained control of those ears!

So sorry for your loss, we also lost our boy yesterday and we're distraught. Megan is beautiful, I'm sure it must get better with time xxx

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 28/12/2014 21:11

Oh spider, that picture is brilliant.

We had to sign the form to give permission for our boy to be euthanised. Felt like I was signing his death warrant, even though he'd have died anyway. Sad

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 28/12/2014 21:13

Oh dicks, sorry, just reread the thread properly. Hope you managed to enjoy Christmas day. Hope he wasn't too ill. Flowers
