A Man kicked my dog this morning

I was horrified! Yes, BastardDog is dog on dog aggressive, but it is all bark and no bite - (sound and fury signifying nothing).

I was marching up the canal towpath trying to keep warm, when my dog crouched down into 'play' position and I saw two big bouncy Munsterlanders approaching. Their owner was a long way behind. I see these dogs regularly and chat to both the man and woman who own them, on several occasions. I always call my boy back and put him on the lead until they are passed and have discussed with them the reasons why. Today I was concerned that I had seen them too late, but bless his soul, my boy came back when shouted so I put him on the lead and crossed over to the other side of the canal. As we passed I joked with the man that they would all have ended up in the lock if they had met and he said something about tossing a coin.

I carried on walking but a train went past and my dog likes to chase them. As I turned round I realised that the man had crossed over behind, so my dog ran into his dogs as he was chasing the train. They had a sniff then a fight broke out at which point the man started shouting "I'm not having this". I shouted my boy and he came back but went ahead of me. I walk with a stick so was trying to catch up with him to put him on the lead but the man kept on walking in the same direction, quicker than me and caught up just as I was about to put my dog on the lead and another fight broke out. At which point the man kicked my dog in the belly making him yelp in pain.

I asked him what he thought he was doing and he said he didn't want a vet's bill. Then he said that dogs will be dogs and it shouldn't affect our friendship. What fecking friendship? I marched off with him shouting after me that it shouldn't affect us. He then shouted that I had ruined a lovely day Confused.

Not sure why I am posting really. It just really upset me. I make every effort to avoid other dogs. I know he had every right to cross the canal and walk in the same direction, but I still don't think he needed to kick him.

Stupid bastard.

Take off the lead when you can see well ahead and all around you. Not every dog wants yours to approach and play for all sorts of reasons so recall and ask the owner before letting yours approach. They could be reactive, nervous, boisterous, aggressive, injured, recovering from an op, etc...

WeAllHaveWings · 19/07/2015 10:38

rachie I've never seen a husky X staff, but I assume at 1 year old he's a fair sized dog, if I was out walking my lab and your dog approached us with no owner in sight I'd be concerned. Sounds like the other dogs owner was running to try to get away from your out of control dog (maybe his dog is reactive) but your dog wasn't giving in and was following. Did you see what happened to your dog, did the collie nip or the owner hurt him. I don't think you have any reason to be livid, unless it's with yourself, as your dog was the one out of control.

You see your dog as a pup just wanting to play, others don't, they see an unknown fully grown dog out of control with no owner nearby.

Marco is spot on, work on your recall so he doesn't go off by himself in other directions or if he does you can get him to return by command/whistle. Do not let him interact with other dogs without agreement between you and the other owner first.

i read the op as the op crossed over to the other side, let her dog off the lead, and they followed her without her really noticing until it was too late?

If that is the case, how on earth is it the ops fault!?

WeAllHaveWings · 19/07/2015 22:31

Op is from last year, recent replies are to rachie who as posted on zombie thread

I have kicked 7 dogs so far.I shall now explain why.
I walk my very dog friendly cockapoo. He is always on a lead (whoever said dogs cannot always be kept on a lead is hugely mistaken , you can actually get 50m leads for nowadays) He is on a lead due to his hunt instinct when he gets a scent of a fox, his choice to be deaf when I call him if he sees another dog and he is also very flighty when scared. We have now had 5 encounters with aggressive off lead dogs. 3 staffs, 1 german shepherd, and 1 incident where I had to fight off a rottweiler a staff and a staffy cross all at the same time.

These dogs were all charging at my dog, growling and snarling and not doing anything a well socialised dog does. I always tried shouting at them and only kicked them at the point where there was no other option. I have a dog I do NOT like kicking dogs. The time the 3 dogs were attacking I had no option but to pick my dog up and keep him out of the jaws of the 3 dogs. Now to the stupid owners of these dogs. 3 were not in view of the dogs and at the time I was not even aware the dogs were with anyone. One said he is ok he wouldn't have hurt him. 2 said they only want to play and the one today said he would only have barked and was very angry at me for kicking his dog who he still hadn't put on a lead and was growling at my dog I did in no uncertain terms tell him I would do it every time his dog got within 2 foot of my dog as he is not friendly and not under control. NO ONE has the right to have their dog out of control and threatening my dog. I will protect my dog with everything I have. I can tell straight away if a dog is ok as my dog has an bunch of tells that show me everything is fine. Yes sometimes he is playing and some growling happens from the other dog because dogs do growl to tell each other off and to tell the other one to submit etc I can see all that and accept that is how things are meant to go. That is not aggression. I believe all dog owners should by law have to take their dogs to puppy classes and dog socialisation classes and learn what their dog is doing. So to the thread writer if you have a dog off lead and a fight or threat of one breaks out with your dog and another dog do not expect the other owner to be nice to your dog in any way. If theirs is off lead as well you are both wrong to have un controlled dogs. Think what could happen if a young child was walking a dog and yours attacked their dog and even them.

Have you searched the web for dog kicking conversations?

Madbengalmum · 14/11/2015 17:18

Oh dear, there would not be these problems if dogs were kept on leads in public places as they should be for the sake of humans and other dogs.
As a dog owner myself i get sick of dogs off leD running up to my girl who doesnt like it.

I understand the frustration I got to lovely dogs both very friendly but my neighbours brought false rumours about them my dogs are for my autistic( high functioning) and ADHD son.1 of my neighbour always kicks my dog this week my son took the dogs out with his friend with out my knowledge ( I was dropping my daughter of to work and my senior son was watching him) he came home upsad the dogs gt loose wanted to play with a neighbours dog and when he tried to catch his dogs the neighbour was shouting and kicking our fogs my female dog was wearing her therepie dog vest😪. My son and his friend got a hold on our dogs she was still kicking them but her dog was sapping and barking at our dogs. She called my kids bastards said she make sure our dogs will be put down. Dogs play as long as the dog is not showing teeth growl or bite agresive I see no reason then on top if you did any dog training or have any knowledge of dogs kicking is not the selution. I desided just not to walk my dog in our vilage again I rather dudge them and walk them in the woods or next vilage. In our case it’s sadly bc of false rumours of my neighbour who from day 1 doesn’t want us living there simple bc where a mix raced family and Im dutch. I usually dudge people like that and avoid situation try keep your dog on leash and avoid this person. Maybe different time for walkies. I warned my son not yo walk the dogs out with out me bc they kinde pick on my boy bc of his ADHD and ASD sadly his dogs mean the world to him so this incident is effecting him seriously it happened 2 days ago and he’s still upsad about it mostly bc the woman treathen to put our dogs down. I reported it by the police and just as I said before desided to dudge them. Find a other walking route and take them for runs to the woods or next vilage park.

Parrakeet · 24/08/2019 21:37

You do realise that they have the same right to be on either side of the canal as you, right? Fight broke out, you said? What are you whinging about?
