advice? dog been bitten

Hi, my dog has been bitten at day care by another dog :-( it's not bad, not a gaping wound but two punctures. It did bleed but has stopped now. He's a greyhound so thin skin anyway. Do I take him vets as precautionary measure? He seems fine just a bit subdued and miserable but I'm worried about infection. Anyone advise?

Take him to the vet, dog bites usually turn into nasty infections so he will need antibiotics ASAP!

No, I would just bathe the wounds with salt water and keep an eye on them. You could also rub some Sudocrem on them too. I was dog sitting my Mum's dog couple of months ago and she and one of my dogs had a fight over a bone and my Mum's dog had a puncture wound on her leg. She limped for couple of days but I bathed it and it healed up fine. Hope your dog is ok.

I think even though it is only two punctures, they could be quite deep through not only the skin but into muscle, also at risk of infection from the bacteria in the other dogs mouth. I would take to vets anyway as a precaution.

There is a very ball possessive dog in my local park who has recently bitten a couple of other dogs thinking they were after it's ball and left puncture wounds and the other dogs healed fine after a day or two. I would only go to vet if it's not healing and looking dry and clean by Thursday or if it starts oozing or feeling warm.

I think I'll take him. He's just opened it up again by sitting down and he cried. Rather be safe than sorry I think. Poor boy Sad Thanks guys

Good luck. I would take him as it might need closing up by the vet. The houndies do suffer with these types of skin tears Sad

That looks more of a tear than a puncture wound. Let us know what vet says

He's very miserable. Didn't get up to say hi when my daughter came in and she can normally only make it two steps before he's all over her. Appointment at ten to five.

Ouch, poor pup, he might be stressed after the incident and its still sore. The vet will sort him out, will maybe give him some painkillers too.

Hope he gets well soon and the vet is not tooooo expensive!!!

Well, back from vets. Shaved the area and it's worse than we thought. Seems the dog bit and pulled whilst biting so it's torn some skin away from muscle. Vet thinks the skin between the two puncture wounds will likely die so he's in tomorrow at 9.10 for an op to cut that skin away. He'll need a drain in, and be left with a big scar. So worried about him having the anaesthetic.

I understand why you're worried about the anaesthetic, but things have moved on a lot and most vets these days are aware of potential sighthound sensitivities. Also, iirc, he's already neutered so must have handled one general ok at sometime.

I'll be thinking of you both and offering a virtual handhold tomorrow morning. Flowers

Thanks moose. Appreciate the handhold. The guilt is awful, I felt uncomfortable leaving him at day care when I saw how this new dog reacted to him, but the woman is so experienced I told myself not to be stupid and I just walked away Sad

I hope the anaesthetic is ok. I'm sure they'll look after him. Well done for taking him to the vets. Handholding from here too. With one of our oldies, he was bitten by a burnese mountain dog and I had no idea till later what a chunk this dog had taken out of ddog's bum. He had a scar, but it shrunk and shrunk and shrunk....

If it helps, which I do understand it probably won't as you're bound to still be worried sick, Pip has the very fine Greyhound skin too - the paper thin type that tears really easily. He's so accident prone that he's had numerous stitches and staples over the past year and they've all healed really neatly, so you can barely see the scar.

He had a GA for neutering a couple of weeks ago and was up, had eaten and was being loud enough for them to call us to fetch him within an hour and a half.

... or in a kennel at the vets apparently. He made a bid for freedom, scaled a 6ft + kennel wall, fell and lacerated all four legs and his stomach, ending up with even more stitches on one of his back legs. Hmm

But hey, that's Pip for you, he never does anything sensibly!

What have the daycare people said about it ? I appreciate its not your main concern at this time but are they paying or the owners of the other dog ? Hope poor dog feels better tomorrow .

Jumping on at work for a quick update – thanks for all the handholding and positive stories, just heard from the vets that Bob got through the operation OK and although he was slow to wake up and they were a bit concerned (argh, don’t tell me that!) he is now recovering nicely and should be able to go home tonight. So relieved. Can’t wait to get him home and comfy in his bed.
