Picking up our 11 week old lab tomorrrow! Excited and scared!!!

For various reasons, it's been a long time coming but we're picking up a beautiful 11 week old golden lab boy tomorrow morning. Think I'm prepared but anything I might have forgotten? It's been 9 years since our last dog died and think I might be out of practice!

Ooh lovely! We got another lab puppy last year and had forgotten how many chewy things and toys they need to play with. Also, our puppy adored pigs ears or pigs ear strips - seemed very tasty and gave them lots of outlet for chewing away contentedly for hours!

How exciting! We pick up our 13 week old lurcher puppy tomorrow, but its only 18 months since we got our now 2 year old.

Lots of cleaning solution, chewy things, and time to go out 5 million times a day for a wee on hand!

That's a lovely name! We are having Iggy! Chosen by 8 yr old DS which was important to us as a family as it's been a long battle to get to this point. I wanted Sidney!

We are picking up our puppy today too. I am too excited (and a little nervous!) to sleep. We are getting an 8 week old chocolate working cocker spaniel called Poppy.
We are going to have to do a 4-5 hour journey home. Surely in this time I will have to put her down somewhere for a wee? If so where is safest? Also how long between feeding her and going in the car? I was thinking 2 hours although completely prepared for sick with lots of old towels, wipe spare clothes etc.

The breeder should sort out the feeding and car journey timings.

Take things to deal with wee and poo accidents too.

Ideally, she'll clear out before she leaves the breeder but if she does need to stop, either let her do it in the car and clear up or if you must stop, absolutely make sure it isn't in a layby or a motorway service station. Both of those places will be laden with other dog germs. Come off at a random junction, and drive until you see somewhere quiet.

Don't forget to take her lead and collar - and a long line if you have it so she can wee safely.

We picked up our little Lhasa apso 2 days ago feel like I've got a new born again, he's adorable toilet training going well brilliant indoors ,just the night times he's cried and cried I've had to go and sleep on the sofa next to him so as not to wake the kids and neighbours up ,he's fine then not a murmur all night if any one Got any tips greatly appreciated ,sorry to gate crash ,we put him in a puppy pen and he's 14 wks old .

We had our 10 week old whippet delivered today, he's already been a hit at the local pub - socialisation is very important Wink - he's met loads of people and a few dogs and so far all toilet business has taken place in the garden - summer time is perfect for toilet training - he's such a sweetie, no biting either!

Logar don't you have to keep them inside/away from other dogs anymore? Or do they do their 'jabs' earlier now? I'm glad he enjoyed the pub - it's important Grin

Vet said he was fine 5 days after his second jab and given he's a sensitive breed I think socialisation and confidence is crucial. Local trainer said that we live is an area where most people vaccinate so risk is very low. We're so happy to be able to take his out, the kids are beyond excited - it's hard to rein them in!

Is he your first family dog/first whippet?

I haven't had a dog for years, my lifestyle just doesn't permit it - but I'd love another cocker spaniel or retriever.

Imthinking of volunterring to do the puppy walking when my youngest starts preschool
for the guide dogs for the blind

I think it a 12-18month commitment
and I will look after the dog im my own home take it for walks get it used to socailising etc

He's blue grey and he's our first family dog - I just can't get over how easy he is. Already taught him to sit and lie down...he's asleep on Dh's legs - the man who never had and didn't want a dog.

I think we are in for a sleepless night though as he's a real people dog...we're sleeping with him in the kitchen but I think he's going to want to snuggle in.

We've put him in his crate while we're eating and his whimpering has left the kids in tears - they'll all have to toughen up, we need him to fit into our
lifestyle with a few necessary adjustments.

I think I might be in love all over again! Grin

BBQ - it's a lovely thing to do. But there's no way on god's little green earth I could hand them over at the end of it. Just No Way.

Log awwwww LOL @your DH Grin You are both sleeping in the kitchen with him? Clearly your kitchen is a lot bigger than mine and far more 'comfy'. I'd let him snuggle on the bed in our room.

Dh is supporting by sleeping in the living room - he has to work tomorrow but will be wakened for night time toilet trips. He has taken a while to come around to the idea of a pup but I wouldn't get one until he did - now he's full of romantic thoughts of an evening's walk to the pup. We called him Jasper! So happy!

I hope you all get some sleep. I can see you curled up in his bed while he sneaks up onto the settee in the sitting room with DH Grin

We bought our working Cocker Spaniel puppy home yesterday. She cried from the breeders to our holiday home and we were a bit what have we done and it was only 20 mins. We spent the morning at our holiday home and took her on the beach (it's our own private one so fine to go down). Then we did the 5.5 hour journey home where she was brilliant and slept a lot. We are being super vigilant with potty training and no accidents yet. She woke twice in the night for a wee so no accidents in her crate. When she went back in I sat with her for 5 mins and then she went back to sleep. She seems to consider our toddler

Oops posted too soon! She seems to consider out toddler one of her litter mates and they are both playing gently together. The amount of work scares me a little but I am so excited about what a wonderful dog she is. hopefully hard work now will pay off with a wonderful well trained family dog.
