Poorly old dog

We have 2 Weims, 8 and 12.
The oldest has been getting "old" for a while, he has cataracts and doggy Alzheimer's, but still toddles around and eats very well.
He had his dinner last night and bolted it as always.
Later on he was sick, just a couple of handfuls, but didn't seem particularly poorly.
He went to bed with us, but this morning didn't want to get up (normally he charges downstairs for his breakfast).
When I tried to get him up, he was very wobbly, and he weed when he came down the stairs.
He had a drink, then put himself back to bed on the lounge floor, where he has stayed all day.
I spoke to the vet before afternoon surgery, and he's going in for evening surgery.
I'm really worried.
Please tell me it's not the end?

Sorry to hear this. Hopefully the vet will be able to give him something to make him more comfortable.
But I do think you should begin to get your head around thinking he may not be with you for too much longer. You won't want him suffering at all, and will know in your heart when the time is right to let him go.
He may well just have some mild infection or something which anti biotic could sort out, and on he goes.

Thanks for your kind words loofa, the problem is it's taken me right back to 8 years ago when our then oldest dog had to be taken to the vet cause he wasn't very well.
When the vet ultrasounded him he was riddled with abdominal tumours.
We had no idea, he had shown no signs at all.
We kept him 3 months, until he had to be pts.
I just can't stop thinking we are going to come home without a dog.

I know how you feel as I have lost an old boy last summer, and it was all over too quickly from out and about one day to gone a couple of days later.

It really may be nothing much at all, but I know you will worry until you have seen the vet as that is natural.

I just wish our animals could have lovely long lives like us and we wouldnt have to keep putting ourselves through all this. But we do, and we will, time and again!

I so wish we had taken him in this morning.
We might have to ask a neighbour to get him in the car, he weighs 35kg, and neither DW or I can lift him.

Unfortunately when we got him to the vets, we couldn't get him out of the car.
The vet came out to see him in the car.
The diagnosis was a hemorrhaging spleenic tumour.
Nothing could be done.
The vet put him down in the car.
He's being cremated.
Can't believe he showed no signs of illness till last night.

Up at 5, couldn't sleep.
Done the recycling.
Can't stop crying.
Can't believe he's not here.
Not at work today, got to keep busy, I'll bottom out the kitchen.
Luccadog is really subdued.
Why do we love them so much, when it hurts so much when their gone?

When I lost my old boy very suddenly to kidney failure, I felt like the bottom had dropped out of my world. Be gentle with yourself and give yourself time to grieve. The days will get slightly easier in time.

Whenever I lose a pet I always find myself coming back to this story which breaks my heart, but I find very comforting too, and answers your question of why we love them just to lose them.

I can see it's a shock that he got ill so quickly, but it's that best for him? As little suffering as possible. I hope my beloved elderly cat leaves the world as quickly and gently as that. So sorry.

i'm so sorry. i have two young dogs - one 2, one nearly 4 and haven't had to face this end of dog ownership yet so can only imagine.

from your dog's perspective quick is a good thing really - no suffering, no long drawn out illness, happily going along right until the day before. hard for you though as no time to get your head around it.

hope you, your wife and other dog are ok.

sorry to hear you lost your boy luccamum and understand how you feel. At least he wasnt ill for ages and you didnt have to watch him suffer.
I lost my old JRT girl last sept, came home and she had died while I was out, I was devastated and till cry now thinking of her Sad also have another old boy who I know probably hasnt got too much time left as he is over 15.
It does get better and while I can still cry over my girly I also smile remembering her and how lovely she was. She was the first dog I had cremated and had the ashes returned, keep the box upstairs and often say goodnight to her as I go to bed Blush Hope you feel better soon and give your other doggie lots of love and hugs

Aww Luccamum Flowers I'm dreading the day I have to make that decision. I love my dog a lot more than I like a lot of people.

My mam has lost two this year she always says it's the last kind you do for them.

Oh I'm so sorry, in tears reading this. The only good thing is that it was quick for him. We also lost one suddenly three years ago. The shock is enormous but better than seeing them suffering. Write down all the little things that were special about him - habits and one-off events that make you smile. You can look back at the list in years to come and smile through your tears. RIP. x
