Dog walking in the rain.

Have had my DDog for 6 months now, he has transformed my life and I dote on him. He is a beautiful 9 month old pug.

I Walk him at least once a day but, keep the walks short due to his size/the breeds problems with overheating.

I've had 3 comments recently regarding walking him whilst his raining. MIL reckons I shouldn't.

Do other MN avoid walking their dogs in the rain?
It doesn't bother me or pup btw!

Nothing at all wrong with walking him in the rain. It's great to maintain exercise. I walk my younger dog in all weathers. The staffie on the other hand point blank refuses to walk in the rain so I don't make her.

I have a terrier x and he gets walked in all weathers .He does wear a selection of Equafleece jumpers in the worst of the weather.

My dalmatian loves going for walks in the rain but my Shizthu refuses to step out the door!

I walk my golden retriever in the rain. I hate it him not so much.

Eric loves to get wet and muddy but he's a reluctant walker when the rain is still falling. Once there's puddles though he loves to get out there.

We go out in all weather,if it's really chucking it down I will put his waterproof coat on,& make the walk a bit shorter ( that's for my benefit ),on the plus side a bit of rain makes his hair nice and soft.

Seriously if your dog is happy to go out in the rain then go. As long as s/he is towelled off when you get home and not left to shiver then I don't see any problems.

I've never heard of not walking dogs in the rain! Sometimes you just have to. My terrier goes out in all weathers, though I try and judge her walks for non-raining as I dislike it.

My jack Russell refuses point blank to go outside in heavy rain, and I don't blame her.

My dog hates the rain, I drag him out anyway...I mean if I waited for it to not be raining...well I think there was a few days over easter there and there might be a couple more in July, lol

The spaniel would go out if it was raining fire, and we go out in all weathers. The poodley thing has to be coaxed and gets cold quickly, so I put a coat on him.

Mine hates going out in the garden when it is raining. Walks are a different thing though. And he is a gun dog, he is special.

My terrier goes out in all weathers. I actually quite like an empty park in the pouring rain!

I did get him.a coat but he looked so disgusted you'd have thought I'd tried to dye him pink! So now we don't bother. He is happy to get wet and filthy.

I love walking my dogs in the rain. The park/fields are empty but for committed dog owners, the general standard of behaviour and control is much higher and my Lurchers can have free reign to do what Lurchers do best and really run, with no fear of anyone getting Lurchered and ending up with broken bones.

My pup has a very fine coat and isn't keen on the rain. He hates going in the garden if it's raining and wears a coat when we go walking, but he completely forgets his hatred of the wet-stuff as soon as he's allowed off-lead for zoomies.

My SCWT loathed going for walks in the rain though, I would have had to literally drag her along she was so determined not to go, so on really wet days (as opposed to a bit of drizzle) she would stay curled up in the warm and dry and I'd just take the other two.

Ah yes the added bonus of having parks and woods all to yourself!

My lot have to go out in the rain, there's work to be done.

It's rare the heavy coated get wet to the skin and even in the most disgusting weather the steam pours off them while they work.
The others may get wet to the skin but a lighter coat doesn't trap it there to chill them.

Up feed through winter and keep them moving is usually enough to keep them nice and toasty.

I'll put waterproofs or drying jackets on them though if they are going to have long periods of waiting around outside or in a non heated car after any exercise because wet and sat still causes chills ime. I'll also put warm jackets on my old ones so their joints don't get cold now they like a more sedate pace.
Tbh most of the pet dogs I see are so fat they'd need an ice age before they needed a coat.

Oh I love walking in the rain, wetter the better, and my dogs don't care. Love being out with only hard core dog owners . Good weather just brings out the one walk a week brigade who are scared of offlead dogs ( thats just round here though, not saying the same for everywhere )

No. She lives near me. I am sure that there are dog that are kept in cupboards around here. I go for months without seeing dogs out and about and as soon as the sun is shining I see dogs I have never seen before. Poor dogs!
