Dog walking in the rain.

Have had my DDog for 6 months now, he has transformed my life and I dote on him. He is a beautiful 9 month old pug.

I Walk him at least once a day but, keep the walks short due to his size/the breeds problems with overheating.

I've had 3 comments recently regarding walking him whilst his raining. MIL reckons I shouldn't.

Do other MN avoid walking their dogs in the rain? Confused
It doesn't bother me or pup btw!

There's a woman in the village who owns 2 YTs. She's out for a walk twice daily, every day.

With a dog under each arm.

I have never once seen their paws hit the ground, they don't have a loo break on the walk she just does a circuit around the green and back home. Bonkers. But she does it in the rain too...with their little hats on Grin

Ha Moose, wish I did, my boys would love a run with your lurchers:)

TheCunnyFunt · 13/05/2014 09:04

What if it rained for weeks on end...? Confused. I'd love to know your MILs reasoning for taking him out in the rain :o

TheCunnyFunt · 13/05/2014 09:05

For NOT taking him out in the rain.

MamaDoGood · 13/05/2014 15:53

Have just asked MIL her thinking (as it's raining AGAIN today)
She says because he'll get a cold GrinConfused

Batshit.

With the wettest autumn/winter we've had in donkeys years, how on EARTH do you NOT walk a dog in the rain?!

I'm with you Bubble - the weekenders are a PITA - and they know nothing about 'normal' dog behaviour.

TheCunnyFunt · 13/05/2014 16:30

A cold :o

MamaDoGood · 13/05/2014 16:47

I'm not allowed to take the DC out in the rain either because they'll 'catch a cold' so i suppose in her head it's logical at least GrinConfused

Well I dog walk for a living and my clients wouldn't be too pleased if I didn't take their dogs out because it rains !Plus it rains a lot where I live.I have all the gear and nothing stops us unless it's dangerously windy as well as wet. Most dogs just don't care and I walk a fantastic little pug who goes out with all the big boys and bounces along whatever the weather.Tbh with pugs I'm much more concerned when it's hot and dry because they overheat so easily,In summer I carry a plant spray and spritz him down after a walk so he doesn't overheat in my van.Ditto Bubble wet days are great because only the hardy dog walkers are out.

There are so many dogs on our road that are never walked, I feel so sorry for them. The woman next door has one chained at the front and one chained at the back, they sleep in sheds separately and have no contact with each other, such sad lives.Eric lives a life of Riley in comparison and is such a happy little thing. I really don't know why you'd have one dog never mind two and keep them chained outside with little human contact.

We walk in all weather. Rain isn't a problem at all for my dog but being small she does get a bit freaked out if it's particularly heavy or hailing.

She does however love strong winds; she has a double coat so is built for the winter; can't stand sunshine though.

There's something particularly pleasing about being out in the driving rain then getting home, drying dog, changing into dry clothes and sitting down to a lovely warm drink while a tired happy dog dozes beside you. Best part of the day.

We have had our 18 month old pug nearly two weeks now, we go out in the rain.

As long as the dog like it, it's not going to hurt him.

MuttDog doesn't enjoy the rain - she's even had swimmers tail a couple of times after heavy downpours. I still take her out, but she tends to run from tree to tree hiding under it and looking beseechingly at the gate back in Grin

She's a great dog, push button with excellent recall, but one time managed to get herself inside a tree (a great old oak with a split trunk) and would NOT come back out for love nor money. No exaggeration, it took me about 15 minutes and then me on my knees dragging her out to get her to come home.

I've invested in a waterproof for her now - we'll see if that makes a difference.

Conversely, she likes nothing better that chasing through the long wet grass of a meadow hay field just after a downpour, so she doesn't mind being wet.

My dog has issues.

Aww such a cutie Bella Grin

We do walk in the rain although youngest dog stops every few minutes and looks longingly over his shoulder in the direction of home. When he was younger he did refuse to go out at all in the rain but we persevered with that.
They do have raincoats (whippets) but the older dog would rather be without his. He loves water, rain, wet grass, puddles, rivers and gets thoroughly muddy and filthy. And then looks shocked when he has to get in the shower at home!
I think in this neck of the woods people don't walk there dogs much which is a shame. Most of them are kept in the garden during the day.

PeanutPatty · 14/05/2014 17:00

Apparently 35% of dogs in the UK are not walked. That's so sad. Poor dogs. Part of the enjoyment of having a dog(s) is walking them and escaping from the smalls. Love going off for the day with the dogs in the boot and the children in their waterproofs to see who can get the wettest/muddiest.

9 dogs on our cul de sac 4 walked daily, 1 walked weekdays by dog walker, 2 walked high days and holidays and 2 never walked so it seems the statistics are about right here.

Ludoole · 15/05/2014 00:14

My yorkie is walked 2/3 times a day depending on the weather...

He hates the rain (even with a waterproof coat) so I bought a dog umbrella. Turns out that doesn't help either as its getting his feet wet he doesn't like... Hmm

PeanutPatty · 15/05/2014 12:54

I have overheard a few people talking about getting a dog/having a dog and it not needing much exercise and so it's let out in the back garden. That's not exercise.

TrinityRhino · 15/05/2014 22:39

Ludoole, he needs doggy wellies Grin

what on earth is a dog umbrella?
do you have to teach them to walk on three legs so they can hold it?

Bubble2bubble · 15/05/2014 22:50
