want a poodle but dh and ds say too girly

need a non moulting dog because ds has asthma triggered by shedding dogs...such a bummer

we had a beardie , we lost her 5 yrs ago but ds wasn't allergic to her as she didn't shed

Ideal dog would be miniature poodle , not with poncy cut.

Anyone have one and vouch for their incredible manliness as pets...or indeed have a suggestions of another breed.

I have 2 miniature poodles.They are amazing dogs...intelligent,energetic and fun.Nothing poncy about them,and I keep them in a short clip that I do myself.They are only poncy if the owner is.!!Mine love being outside,we walk miles,and they love swimming.Do not get a poodle cross.....the latest fad,as why doodle when you can poodle!!

If they're anything like the two giant poodles who live down the road, not poncy at all vicious bastard dogs. My brother has a spaniel/poodle cross. Stupid, yes but not unmanly.

standard poodle is a thought...he may find them more manly..not with poncy cut though...will look for pics of standard

Yes don't be put off by the (IMO) strange cuts when you google them - they can look much more normal. The one I know of (he isn't mine but I see him every day for hours a day) has none of the terrier tendencies. When you read about them it suggests that they need a firm hand during their puppy training stage to endure they don't get too strong willed but I've seen none of that in this dog. It is a breed I would never have considered but definitely would in the future seeing how lovely this one is.

Poodles were Russian hunting dogs originally, very tough, long distance runners, not wimpy dogs at all.

I think you could groom them yourself. The one I know of looks neither lamb like or like the shaggy goat!!! It's hard to find a photo when they aren't being sheared I will see if I can find something later.

My mother's first dog was a poodle in the early '60s - she swears it was the most intelligent dog she has ever owned and as to it's bravery, she was attacked on a quiet path, pushing me in a pram, and the dog would not leave the attacker alone, and through nips and noise saw him off. Lived to 16 y.o. and was spoilt every day of his life after that - and my very manly DF loved him to pieces as well!

My parents once offered my sister and I the choice of a poodle or a cat. We chose a cat for the same reason OP's DH & DS. He was a bloody Siamese and we hated each other.

I've never owned a poodle but have known/met a few and I think they're ace. Very clever, sociable and bright, athletic... gorgeous dogs. I like the chocolate-brown kind.

Sorry, but he's wrong! He's probably seen pictures of ones will silly, poncy haircuts but they are great with just a simple clip. Love choc brown ones as well. Supposed to be fab dogs, clever, active as you like but not too over the top, middle size ones are perfect for families.

The miniature poodles I have met on walks are feisty energetic lovely things , not cut with pom poms.

Alternatively if a poodle stays a big no I would be drawn to a miniature schnauzer, soft non shedding clever and they have beards, even the girls ! A nice size small/ medium dog that would suit your DH. Lots of the schnauzers are walked by men too!

I sometimes clip her or take her to the groomer but not for a poodle clip

Labradoddles can be really big, I have met some that seem taller than a Labrador. If you wanted a cross, and of course there's no guarantee you will get a non shredder a cockerpoo would be lovely and the right size. Have met loads of cockerpoo puppies, they do seem the latest thing, so last year am I with my cocker!

My friend has a baby labradoodle, who is very lovely and bouncy but he is about 6 or 7 feet tall and he isn't even fully grown. He also sheds like a bugger. I know several poodle crosses who shed. Water dogs are lovely. I think someone who would struggle to walk a poodle wouldn't fair much better with a Bedlington terrier.

labradoodle fine but I would have to check out ds with them first and think the coat changes a lot from pup to adult

How about a wire haired breed? My dd's friend is allergic to dogs but not to our wire haired Podengo as the hair isn't as fine. I wouldn't necessarily recommend a Podengo......I'm sure there's nicer wire haired dogs.
