My poor dog is being put to sleep today

Just that. Haven't stopped crying and it's not even done yet. Vet says it's the only course of action as she is in renal failure due to dysplastic kidneys and now had complications from all the fluids. What will happen as can't bear the thought of her looking at us whilst they stick another needle in her. She has been in intensive care for a week and they have tried everything. Can't believe it's come to this as she is only 3.

I'm so sorry - poor dog and poor you

Don't expect too much from yourself for the next few days - you'll need time and space to grieve

M1SSUNDERSTOOD · 29/01/2014 08:50

Thanks for replying and understanding. Have to keep a brave face for the dc. She had been very vital when she was home and then a sudden onset of sickness. It's as if she has gone already but is still here iyswim?

So very sorry to hear that. Hard with an older dog but with a three year old you must feel cheated as well as devastated. Give her a cuddle and tell her you love her while the vet does what he has to do. Vet will probably leave you for a few minutes with her afterwards. When I've been through that I've felt very numb immediately afterwards. The tears flowed later. During the next few days write down all your happy memories and her little habits, which will give you something to smile about in months/years to come. x

So sorry for you , our cavalier went through a similar thing two years ago. In the end it was the best for him, the vet couldn't get him better despite trying various treatments. I still think about how miserable he must have felt being poorly, and they can't tell you. They will be at peace and I always remember all the lovely times we had. It will be a horrible day for you and the family, and the coming months will be sad. But you must be doing the kindest thing for her
Thanks

Thanks dc have picked out her favourite toy before they went to school. We are going to take a picture of her with it for them to remember her by. We all just want her back but she is suffering now and will be at peace soon.

How devastating for you. I didn't have a brave face to put on when one of our ddogs was put to sleep. I howled. The Dogs Trust has helpful information about coping with the loss of a dog. Big ((((((((MN)))))))))

Gileswithachainsaw · 29/01/2014 09:31

How very sad :(

I'm sure she had a happy life up until now and knows you all love her dearly.

You are doing a kind thing by ending her suffering xx Thanks

I'm so sorry M1SS. We have an appointment at the vet in an hour and we suspect our old dog won't be coming home with us. His mind has slowly been going but the last 2 days he's been so out of it that it seems cruel to keep him going. He's just wandering around crying and bumping into everything.

So hugs from me....

Aquelven · 29/01/2014 09:56

Oh, I'm so very sorry.
That's so very hard, her being so young too, you must be devastated.

And Annie too. It's always heartbreaking, I'm really sorry.

You must be feeling terrible today - and that's fine, cut yourself some slack. I saw my dad cry for the first time when our family dog was out to sleep, and it didn't upset me in the slightest. It drove home how much she had been loved.

Our dog was put to sleep a year ago due to kidney failure. He was old, but had been healthy up until then and it came as a complete shock. I asked that he felt poorly, and was never going to feel better. Enduring an illness is ok to an extent if you're going to get better, but he wasn't, and that was really the only decision we could make.

I was worried about the process itself, but it was strangely fine.

Your dog is lucky to have you - there are much worse things to happen than drifting away in the company of someone that you love (sorry for the sap).

My last dog was pts at the vets
We discussed what would happen afterwards, would I take her body home? Have her cremated? And I picked cremation with the cardboard tube
They turned the lights down and put her on a lovely chunky fleece blanket and I stroked her whilst the vet gave her the injection and for a while after she had died
No one will rush you and there is no right or worn way to react. I just wanted to stroke her so she knew I was there and she felt safe :(
I'm so sorry x

M1SSUNDERSTOOD · 29/01/2014 11:02

Thanks for all your kind thoughts She died peacefully in Dh's arms at 10.30. It was the vet who had been looking after her all week who held her paw and it's all over now. Seeing her today she looked ill and just lay down and we stroked her like she used to like being stroked. It was very quick and glad I was present when she needed us most.

You poor thing. It's so awful. Try to remember that she's not in pain anymore. She had a lovely life with you. And let yourself cry as much as you need xxx

EmpressOfTheWellOfLostPlots · 29/01/2014 11:19

I'm so sorry xx

timesarehard · 29/01/2014 11:22

I'm so, so sorry. I know where you are right now. Be kind to yourselves and give yourselves time to grive. It is six months on for us and I still catch my breath sometimes when I suddenly remember. Our lovely lab was only seven and died of a sudden illness.

You're in my thoughts today.

needastrongone · 29/01/2014 11:26

I am crying, I am so very very sorry. No words for you but lots of sympathy. Only 3.

I was grumbling today about the mud, I won't grumble this afternoon.

fanoftheinvisibleman · 29/01/2014 11:31

Gileswithachainsaw · 29/01/2014 11:35

Our dog went to sleep around the same time, M1SS, hopefully they met up and kept each other company on their trip to the doggy hereafter. X
