I'm not only a fair weather walker really, took ddog (our first 8 month old lab pup) out for an hour last night after 6pm in the dark and pissing wind and rain, throwing a ball around for him and he loved it.

I can cope with, and even enjoy once I am out there, the walk in the rain. I am hating the 3 times a day wet dog, loads of wet smelly towels, and wet clothes, redoing hair (it goes scary frizzy after being out in rain and its struggling with straighteners being used at least twice a day). Washing machine seems to be constantly on.

I'm counting the sleeps until summer not Christmas! Grin

I think I'm odd but I quite like shite weather, the type where your pants get wet under 7 layers.

I think it stems from having a 16 mnth old dog who will race over the horizon at the slightest hint of a playmate. My local country park is populated (with exception of early doors when us and doggy friends take over) by ladies of a certain age who walk fluffy dogs whilst wearing white (huge apologies it is anyone out there, I mean no harm!) . So to me, that weather means we stand the chance of an off lead run!

Floralnomad · 21/12/2013 11:02

You need to invest in a dog bag for drying ,bring them back ,zip them up and hey presto 15/20 minutes later a shiny dry dog . fan what do you think it is that makes people think that white is a sensible colour for walking a dog ? We have a couple of ladies here that walk Goldie's in long white/cream coats - madness!

fanoftheinvisibleman · 21/12/2013 11:12

Problem is it is a pretty country park, ornamental ponds, Hall/Museum with tearooms but also woods and big fields and it is 5 minutes walk door to door for me. So it attracts me and my dog walking buddies who go early to let about 15 playful mutts race around. But later on it also attracts a certain amount of fair weather walkers with little dogs that come out for a 10 minute pootle round the pretty bit of the gardens and then head for the tearooms.

I know I have to share but a little part of me loves it when the place is all mine in foul weather Grin

Any recommendations for dog bags - they get c mixed reviews on amazon - but having seen the state of our pup after DH had taken him for a mud wallow/walk this morning I think I'm going to have to invest in one

GemmaTeller · 21/12/2013 11:23

We used to have a German Shepherd, she loved going out in the rain, going in the ponds, streams, getting as muddy as possible then having a bath when she got home. Didn't matter how bad the weather was, it never put her off.

Now, we have two boxers and they do not like the wind and rain one bit, they sprawl on their beanbag looking out the window and its funny watching them pretend to ignore us when we say, 'come on, get your lead' Smile

I've got the doggy bag brown microfibre ( the expensive type but got it cheapish at a show) . It has got a very sturdy zip and my mud magnet terrier comes out looking like he's been polished. This morning he had been wallowing in muddy puddles like a hippo and without the bag it would have been carnage .When you first start using them you probably will have to sit with the dog as they keep trying to get out of the bag but mine has got used to it .

JamInMyWellies · 21/12/2013 11:35

What is a dog bag. My cross basset cocker gets in a dreadful mess. Drives me bonkers!

WeAllHaveWings · 21/12/2013 11:56

Rain went off and just had a good windy hour out but without rain Smile, but black lab pup came back looking more like a choc lab as its all fields and muddy puddles and he played in every single one. so he needed a good rub down when he came back to wipe the mud off. I've now got another towel which is brown with mud ready for the washing machine (as well as mine and ds's denims).

These dog bags sound interesting, but where does the mud go? I don't want a dry but mucky dog, its easier to wipe down when he's wet (then brush later).

The one I've got ,which as I said was one of the more expensive type, wicks the mud off the dog somehow and then we just turn it inside out and shake it outside then put it on the radiator to dry ,not that it seems very wet TBH. The mud doesn't seem to stick to the bag .

pigsDOfly · 22/12/2013 01:12

Oh dear fan. I am probably a lady of a certain age and I too have a small fluffy dog but wear white? Never.

When walking my girl I'm usually to be found in a pair of mud splattered old jeans and wellies. There's nothing she loves more than tearing round the park after her ball and if it's raining well, so be it, as long as it's not too heavy, it just means an opportunity to wade up to her elbows in muddy puddles.

I love walking in foul weather too. It feels so good when you get home.

fanoftheinvisibleman · 22/12/2013 09:46

Sorry PigsDOfly! Some of my dog park friends are women of a certain age with fluffy dogs but like you, they are treatng them like dogs!

I refer specifically to the white trouser/ gold shoe brigade who look appalled at our romping mud hounds who range from small and fluffy to a great dane!

TinselinaBumSquash · 22/12/2013 09:49

Do you not have a treadmill you can attach him too? Wink

pigsDOfly · 22/12/2013 12:30

Love the idea of the treadmill Tinselina. Just scatter a variety of smelly stuff around it - dead fish heads, fox poo etc and pooch will be in doggy heaven.

WeAllHaveWings · 22/12/2013 15:14

Treadmill sounds good, but he enjoys the muddy puddles and more importantly the company.

He was playing with a wee staffy bitch we sometime bump into this morning who likes to chase him and pin him to the ground and roll around with him. He usually comes home with muddy paws and undercarriage. This time it was ALL over!

Washing machine is going again now.

Waterproof over trousers have improved my dog walking life, together with a long coat & a hat rather than a hooded coat.

Chiggers · 26/12/2013 19:37

I just use old clothes for walking my staffies. My bitch hates the wet weather, but my 1yo male staffy couldn't care a toss. I have kept some of my old fishing clothes to change into when going out for a wander with the mutts. I have a 2pc flotation suit that I need to collect from my parent's house, so I might use that, although, when I have it on, I look like one of Ken Dodd's Diddy Men Grin

Ilovemydogandmydoglovesme · 26/12/2013 20:50

Oh my god someone please link to a dog bag!

tulip27 · 26/12/2013 22:37

Yes what is this dog bag , I have googled and got some very odd results !!

HorsePetal · 26/12/2013 22:55

What the hell is a dog bag? Is this a wind-up? Link please?

Eastpoint · 27/12/2013 01:11

You can make one from a bath sheet - you sew up the sides so you have a pillow case shape made from towelling then hem the open end putting some rope in it to make a drawstring opening. The dog climbs in at the end of the walk, its head pokes out of the drawstring end. I've explained it rather poorly - have a look at this:

dry dog bag

Ilovemydogandmydoglovesme · 27/12/2013 18:25

I amazed that not only does it purport to dry the dog by itself but it also gets the mud off. I really hope that's true because I've got to have one!

Amandine29 · 29/12/2013 15:10

I love walking in the rain. Especially the kind that leaves you soaked to the skin. When we get back I just pick my dog up and stick him in the shower if it's that bad but I appreciate not everyone's dog weighs 15kg. Dog bag sounds intriguing!

basildonbond · 30/12/2013 17:38

Have ordered a dog bag - will report back as to its effectiveness ....

WeAllHaveWings · 30/12/2013 18:13
