Just thought I'd start the new thread!

Toby (foxy coloured yellow Labrador) is now 13 weeks old. Long, lean and lanky. Still wonderfully tempered and is sleeping through and no longer messing in the house.

Really sorry to hear about your holiday moose - I can imagine that a Sudden Change of Plan would go down about as well in your house as it would in mine ...

basildonbond · 23/10/2013 06:16

Welcome to the thread slummy - Ruby sounds gorgeous

DharmaLovesDraco · 23/10/2013 06:39

Oh no Moose :( I have no advise or anything useful to add but just wanted to say how crap it is.

Iamaslummymummy · 23/10/2013 09:11

Thanks for the welcome all.

Great night for ruby last night. She didn't go to the toilet at all between 10pm and 5.30 when I woke her up, despite me getting up to let her out twice. She's just lovely. Smile

Aw she is lovely lama welcome to our thread.

All DC at school or nursery, Nala and I just back from a walk. She is still terrified of traffic. She tries to pull away from it, I've been getting he to sit and talking to her whilst it passes am hoping that daily exposure will help.

haggisaggis · 23/10/2013 13:10

Angus got me up 3 times last night - think it was mainly beacuse I was busy doing other stuff yesterday evening and dh was in charge of puppy - who then slept all evening! (puppy - not dh) Today he won't be allowed a nap after tea and hopefully that will help!
I'm shattered.

picnicinthewoods · 23/10/2013 13:27

Oh dear moosemama that's so rubbish for you:( Can you go away somewhere in England instead, even just a night or two? We travel a lot to Ireland too, so Ive taken note of what you've said. Totally gutting for you all.

can't wait to start training classes on Saturday, I've got so much to sort with him!

New problem! How do I get my pup in the boot of the car for journeys? he was going on passenger seat on someones lap, but its dangerous now he's the size he is (11kilos). I cannot lift him into the boot (even treats don't tempt him) and even when he is in there he jumps into the back with the kids. He hates the boot, but he going to be far too big to go anywhere else, so I need to get him used to it. I think he feels sick in there, but I don't take him further than 20 mins otherwise he pukes! Poor thing, I'd be carsick in the boot too! What to do? where does your pup go when you're in the car?

Awks · 23/10/2013 13:33

Aw moose that's so disappointing, hope you can do some nice things as a family locally instead.

Slummy look on my profile and see our cocker pup Jarvis. Ruby and he could be related Grin He's nearly 5 months now and is teething too. Just found one of his tiny teeth on the floor, urgh.

Picnic ours still goes in the footwell but think I will have to do the same as you. jarvis hates the car too, he sulks and is a real pain to get in now he is much bigger.

moosemama · 23/10/2013 13:41

Thanks picnic. Unfortunately we broke the bank paying for the tickets, so haven't anything left to go somewhere else. Also, we have to fork out at least £100 for both dogs to get passports. We're going to move our trip to the Christmas break, purely because we'll lose the money we've paid otherwise. None of the dcs wants to be away for actual Christmas though, which is a pain as it turns out that with dh's new job's Christmas closure, we could actually have gone for longer.

If you do plan to go to Ireland, it's worth noting that not only do you need the rabies vaccination at least 21 day prior to leaving, your dog had to be microchipped prior to the vaccination and to enter Ireland he must be treated against tapeworm no greater than 5 days and no less than 24 hours before you travel - although you don't have to do it coming the other way.

The whole thing is farcical, as both the UK and Ireland are Rabies and Tapeworm free. Hmm Angry It's a massive money making scheme for the vets and drug manufacturers, but I've read today of a couple of cases of animals being impounded, so seriously not worth the risk. In one case it was a cat and the owners couldn't afford quarantine fees, so it was pts. Out-bloody-rageous given that it couldn't possibly have had rabies and was therefore no risk to anyone. On another forum, one lady travelled fine with her two dogs in September, but later found out other pets on the same journey were impounded - which is in the nature of spot checks I suppose.

Ridiculously there are no plans to enforce pet check in, so all pets can have their chips and passports checked - it seems it will just be random checks, so some will get away with it, while others who are less lucky will get caught if they don't pay £££s and comply. Angry

Anyway, enough ranting about all that - we've made the decision to postpone instead of cancel, the dcs are still upset, but we can't do much about that and at least we still get to go. After this time there won't be an issue, because as long as we keep up with the vaccination boosters it'll just be ongoing.

moosemama · 23/10/2013 13:51

Right, back to business.

Pip should have gone to puppy class today but I have been in bed, dosed up on cold and flu remedy instead. Far from ideal - but I guess he can go next week now, as we'll still be in the UK now - every cloud ....

He hated travelling in the boot to start with and screamed so loudly and consistently (then gnashed the bars of the crate and got his jaw/teeth stuck) that we gave up and I started having him in the footwell. I fed him treats for a few short journeys and he started falling asleep in there, so then we moved him into a crate in the boot with Lurcherboy.

If he hates the boot that much, he could have have a car harness and be belted in in the back. Both my massive GSD and enormous Boxer x GSD had car harnesses and were back seat passengers - I suppose it depends how many dcs you have though. At one point we had the Boxer x, Belgian Shepherd x and a Wheaten Terrier all lined up and harnessed into the back. Grin

You can buy ramps for dogs to walk up, but if he's reluctant to get in there it probably won't help. Ideally you would start off just feeding, treating and playing with him in the boot, then try closing the lid and treat him from inside, then perhaps start the engine, then keep it running, then move a foot etc. If he's really bad, you could start the positive association process by feeding him at the closest point to the boot that he can cope with (whether that be on the doorstep or just outside the boot on the driveway) and gradually work up from there.

If he is going to travel in the boot, ideally you should have a dog guard or travel crate for him, as people have been severely injured and even killed by dogs flying forwards in the event of an accident.

basildonbond · 23/10/2013 14:01

Fitz is still in his travel crate - he's absolutely fine in there, usually just goes to sleep . We did lots of treating for him going in and then for staying in and then went on a couple of v short journeys and that seemed to do the trick

Not sure what we'll do once he's too big for it...

basildonbond · 23/10/2013 14:07

Hope you feel better soon moose

mintchocchick · 23/10/2013 14:13

I'm glad you've rearranged till Christmas Moose - although still a bit disappointment at least you won't loose your cottage money. Will the ferry tickets be exchangeable?

What a ridiculous situation that is - we'll be taking minty to Ireland next year, to a cottage in county cork so it's good to know of changes. So unfair on people though.

Re car: we have minty in the footwell of passenger seat whether there is someone there or not. He settles really well and if I'm on my own, whenever I stop at lights, I throw a treat on floor for him, only if he's lying quietly, which he just about always is. BUT DH can't fit in passenger seat no with minty as his legs are too long - DHs! So we need another solution as I'm unalloyed the driver on journeys. I thought about buying a travel crate for boot but really hard to get a reluctant puppy to go in.

I have to lift minty and he hates being lifted and sometimes growls. So I must admit I'm getting a bit reluctant to take him in the car unless my DHs there as he never seems to growl at him. Really tricky getting it right without spending a fortune.

I really didn't fancy car harness as a wet dog on back seats would just be too much hassle for me I think!

sweetkitty · 23/10/2013 14:14

We don't have a traditional boot as we have a 7 seater so we have 2-3-2 but we don't need all 7 seats so Nala has a seat of her own and a harness. It's funny as she know which seat is hers and she sometimes had a DC in the back with her. She's good in the car though, just doesn't like them passing her Grin I don't know what we will do as she grows, will she still fit in a single seat or will we have to remove that whole seat.

moosemama · 23/10/2013 14:37

Thanks mintchoc. It's a family owned holiday home, so it's just the ferry tickets. We'd booked economy which means we don't get anything back if we cancel (although we wouldn't get anything back on a flexi ticket either at this late stage) but we can transfer to different dates if we pay the difference plus a transaction fee.

Sweetkitty, my huge Boxer x boy fitted on one seat with his harness, but he had to curl up very tightly if he wanted to lie down. We had a dog proof seat protector on our back seat to avoid the problem of dog hair and wet dogs etc.

picnicinthewoods · 23/10/2013 17:16

Thanks guys:) think im going to go for a car harness then and pop him in the back with the kids! they will adore that and he will be happy too, as he just wants to be with us when in the car I think:)

SallyBear · 24/10/2013 07:50

I used "good quiet" and constantly treated Toby every time he was quiet in the car. By the end of the second journey he accepted the car. Quite happy in his car harness. I got an adjustable one with two clips that goes around the neck and chest from PAH. Some were putting over their heads which seemed impractical with a growing puppy. It was £16.

NCISaddict · 24/10/2013 15:35

Just been to take Finn for his micro chipping, the needle is huge!!!! He was very brave and didn't even whimper, was too busy snaffling the treats the nurse had for him.

moosemama · 24/10/2013 16:01

Aw, what a good boy! Grin It does look massive doesn't it, but I've never had a dog squeal yet when they're being chipped, so it can't hurt that much.

I have upped Pip's food, yet again. He's now on the maximum intake for puppies expected to be 25-45kg when fully grown. Full grown Saluki's don't usually weigh more than 30kg!

I think he must be going through a growth spurt, as he suddenly looks really skinny again. Confused The only difference this week is that I've been too ill to do any training, so he hasn't had much on top of his kibble allowance. (Which is actually really annoying because I cooked and chopped up 3 chicken quarters on Monday in readiness for school runs and puppy class and now I'm going to have to throw them away. Hmm)

Poor thing, he's so bored as well. His green feeder keeps him occupied for 10 minutes each feed time but other than that he's mostly looking for mischief or harassing Lurcherboy, who is a monumental grump this week due to only getting one walk a day from dh instead of 2-3 longer ones from me.

We're thinking about taking them somewhere they can galavant on the beach while dh is off next week to make up for it - anyone got any suggestions for somewhere doable for a day-trip from the Midlands/Warwickshire? (Doesn't matter if it's a very long day, happy to get up early and get home late.)

emummy · 24/10/2013 18:51

Can I join?! We picked up our puppy today! He's a 13 week old shi-tzu from our local rescue. He is very cute, gentle and affectionate with the children. He has pee'd once in the garden and poo'd on the kitchen floor! The next challenge will be sleeping I guess. Should I get up during the night to let him out? The rescue said he was clean in his kennel but obviously everything is new for him here

digerd · 24/10/2013 19:10

Shitzu pup 13 weeks from your local rescue - you were so lucky as they are a rarity. So cute too and the furry small, young breeds are the first to go.
Do you know why he was given up by his previous owners?
You may be lucky with the over night if he has been used to being alone in his crate/kennel . But cannot believe he was more than a day at the rescue?

See how it goes tonight. Take him out into the garden before your bed-time, so long as it is not pitch black. And fingers crossed for you.
