Just thought I'd start the new thread!

Toby (foxy coloured yellow Labrador) is now 13 weeks old. Long, lean and lanky. Still wonderfully tempered and is sleeping through and no longer messing in the house.

Yes , we went to look at another puppy which the children didn't like and then they produced this one! He wasn't on the website so I think he was just in. Will take him out but we're in Aberdeenshire so it's definitely dark!

digerd · 24/10/2013 20:06

If your back garden has no flood lightng or street lights, take a good torch with you. Buy a larger one tomorrow if yours is too small.
I met a 4 month-old Shitzu and she was really sweet. I have a 3 year-old Lhasa Apso - similar to yours. The 2 breeds are similar, but mine is very quiet, non-hyper, non-aggressive but stubborn. Only barks when the doorbell rings. Doesn't go up to people but stands and looks at them inquisitively. Very friendly with other dogs. I have had 2 Lhasas in my life and neither were interested in chasing and catching a ball. Their muzzles are very short.
Yours at 3 months will begin to teeth now until 6 months old so will need something to chew. As adults they do not chew things and are very well behaved. Think Shitzus are not quite so stubborn as the Lhasas Smile.
Get up at 6am at the latest and take him straight outside in your arms as will need to wee unless he has done it in the night.
Good Luck - you are a very lucky family. They cost £600 from the breeders.

Been to puppy class tonight, Finn was very good but is now exhausted. He fell in love with a GSD called Nala. He thought she was lovely, which she was.

sweetkitty · 24/10/2013 21:03

A friends Shitzu is having puppies in a few weeks, don't worry I'm not tempted one mad pup is enough and I'm not a little ball of fluff type of girl, more a big running machine Grin or farting machine as she is now.

She's been very bitey today Hmm DS doesn't help he's terrible with her so rough I've been showing him to stroke her back nice but is go into the kitchen and come back out and he's pulling her by the leg or something HmmHmmHmm I'm having to watch him so closely.

ThatVikRinA22 · 25/10/2013 00:44

hello - i pick up our brand spanking new fluff ball on saturday.

he is a long coated german shepherd pup.

ive bought nothing.....its a long car journey for him home (2 hours) so dont really want to chew him about back out to pets at home for collar etc....

we are going to crate him to keep him safe at night. He is by all accounts a bit of a handful!

he will be 7 weeks old when we get him.

i might take him to p@h on sunday for a collar etc....though he will not have had his 2nd jabs.....he will be a bit big to carry - someone said he can ride in a trolley? is this safe?

i want to socialise him as much as poss and have puppy classes lined up for straight after his 2nd jabs....he will go to training/puppy class weekly.

NCISaddict · 25/10/2013 06:31

How exciting Vicar, I love german shepherds, I have to resist going to make a fuss of the ones I see at work. I think Finn's GF at puppy class is a long haired one, she's beautiful and he was besotted with her even though she was twice his size.

We've found crating to be fantastic, Finn has never had an accident at night or cried.

emummy · 25/10/2013 07:23

Well that was a fun night! He had a bark and whine very hour until I gave up and went down and slept on the sofa. Then we got 3 whole hours sleep! He has pee'd on the kitchen floor this am so I guess he did that before I woke up but he has done a poo in the garden so very pleased with that. Am so tired I can barely eat breakfast! Dcs all very happy tho, they slept well!

digerd · 25/10/2013 11:42

Oh, dear, sorry you were not lucky and got so little sleep emummy. But that is normal. He had so much lovely company and play from DC and missed you all. I had hoped he would be worn out and slept throughSad.
13 weeks is always easier than at 8 weeks, but poor little thing has had a upsetting time going from owners to rescue and now the home he always wantedSmile. Good boy for the poo in the garden Smile
I assume he is not crated/travel boxed in?

emummy · 25/10/2013 12:08

Just waiting on crate to arrive, I think that might be a good idea for him as he seemed very restless even when I was there, was up and wandering all around. Am practising being patient, keep repeating "It'll be better soon"! DH comes home tomorrow, then he can help!

sweetkitty · 25/10/2013 12:41

Awe tough night emummy, I had a week on the soda with out pup, then she would wake about 5am for a pee. Now she goes to 6am when DP gets up.

So after all the worry about Nalas weight I weighed her this morning, 6lbs gain in 2 weeks, 10.8kgs now at. 14 weeks. You can still see her ribs though so we are going to continue with the 4 meals a day and a half pack of tripe.

Got her a new flurry blanket today, put it in her crate the went out DP was in and went upstairs to make a phonecall and crated her, yes she did a poo Hmm

haggisaggis · 25/10/2013 13:09

Angus is a bit better at night now - we are keeping him awake during the evening and then bed around 11-1130. He wakes around 2 a.m. for a pee and I take him out to the garden (very dark - rural Angus so close to Aberdeenshire) with a large torch. He usually lies down on the grass but I keep putting him back on his feet until he finally does something. Then back to sleep (still in a cardboard box in our room) until around 6 - 6.30. It is amazing the difference a couple of hours more sleep makes!
I have a play pen for downstairs during the day I put him in if I need to pop out or if the cats need some peace. He's doing great - been clean in the house since Tuesday!

moosemama · 25/10/2013 14:35

Trying to catch up but struggling.

Welcome emummy, your boy sounds lovely. All very normal with the noisy night. It will settle down as he starts to relax and feel safe. We slept on the sofa with Pip in the same room in his crate for a while as well.

Welcome to Vicar too. I was on your thread when you were trying to find a puppy. Can't wait to see a photo, we adore GSDs and will definitely be having another when the dcs are older - but will probably go for a rescue (although would secretly love a pup).

Sweetkitty, good to hear Nala is gaining. Sounds like 4 meals plus tripe diet is working.

Pip woke at 4.00am the other night. Dh was a real grump about it till I pointed out how cold it was. We've put his jumper on every night since and he's been fine and back to getting up between 6.00 and 6.30 when dh get up.

haggis, sounds like Angus is doing really well.

Well, after two weeks of being trapped in the house first with poorly dd, then poorly dd, ds2 and me, Pip has now decided to yell every time I go upstairs again. So frustrating. I'd just got him to the point where he didn't bother where I was in the house and was able to be left for up to an hour with his kongs and treat toys. He's obviously got a bit too used to me being right there, as have been on the sofa with a duvet for most of the week, so I could supervise both kids and dogs from my sick-bed. Feels a bit like two steps forward three steps back at the moment ... with lots of things actually. Hmm

SallyBear · 25/10/2013 14:37

Moose ((hugs)) Hmm

OP posts:
moosemama · 25/10/2013 14:51

Thanks Sally.

He just fell asleep on the living room bed, so I carried (well lugged) the great lanky hound into the kitchen and put him in his crate. He meeped for about half a minute then conked out.

I'm feeling quite a bit better today, so back to mean-mummy mode and enforcing periods of separation whether he likes it or not.

We've noticed recently that the living room to hallway door seems to be a trigger for him realising I've disappeared. So I need to do lots of in-out/in-out work on desensitising him to that. Hoping the constant stream of dcs up and downstairs during the holiday might help with the process, as they're certainly driving me bonkers constantly opening and closing it. Hmm

haggisaggis · 25/10/2013 15:02

Have put a picture of Angus on my profile (I think!!)

basildonbond · 25/10/2013 15:14

The crate has been fab - Fitz sleeps much better in the crate than out - he has another bed which he likes to flop on but he never really completely switches off so unless he gets a couple of naps in the crate he gets horribly overtired by tea time

At night he goes in the crate and goes straight to sleep and we don't hear a peep out of him until we go down in the morning (I slept on the sofa for the first few nights).

He's only ever messed in the crate when he had a bit of a post-vacc blip last week but that sorted itself out after 3 days and he's back to being accident-free overnight

moosemama · 25/10/2013 16:10

haggis he's gorgeous. My very first Lurcher was a whippet x sheltie (so not Rough Collie, but very simlar). They always have such beautiful faces. Smile

Pip favours Lurcherboy's bed over his crate in the day unless he's totally worn out after a walk or training. He used to sleep in it all the time when it was in the living room, but prefers to choose a bed nearer to us during the day these days.

He gets all his meals in the crate, goes in willingly and is happy enough in there generally. We really need to get him a bigger bed to go in it now though, as he's actually sleeping on, rather than in his puppy bed these days and I think that might also be contributing to him favouring Lurcherboy's big memory foam bed, as he can stretch fully out on it.

DharmaLovesDraco · 25/10/2013 20:28

Puppy is poorly again :(

We had our first walks yesterday (he was awesome ;) ) and last night I noticed that his poo was a bit soft and squishy but thought nothing of it, had a poo accident this morning (unheard of now) walked this morning (again awesome) came home and he had terrible runs and hasn't really stopped since, as in every time he normally goes it's diarreah (even scrambled eggs came through v quickly). He was then sick about 1.5 hours ago :(

He is drinking but should I avoid feeding him anything until the morning?

We are supposed to be going home tomorrow which is a 3 hour drive, we were going to see his breeder again and meeting my sisters dogs for the first time, plus christening on Sunday :( :(

Fed up and gutted that he is poorly again.

Sorry for the self indulgent whinge.

mintchocchick · 25/10/2013 22:02

Oh dear Dharma that sounds awful. If he were mine, I wouldn't feed him tonight at all. See what happens overnight and maybe wait to give him food until you get a sense how he is in the morning. Just cooked chicken to start with?

Keep an eye though as they can get dehydrated but if he's drinking that's good. Our puppy has been sick a few times and it's been random, turned into nothing, but each time I've fed him after an episode of sickness I've divided his feed into 3 lots and given him 30g, then waited half an hour, then 30g again waited then the remaining 20g only after I'm sure he's keeping it down.

But sounds like you might need to phone the vets tomorrow to get it checked out if it goes on. Really sorry for you.

happygolucky0 · 25/10/2013 22:10

Personally I would not give the poorly up any thing else to eat tonight. Maybe some cooked chicken tomorrow if he/she is hungry. What food have you been giving do you think it could be that?

Ah a baby shih tzu. Mine is almost 21 weeks now! Gosh I won't beable to post on here soon!! Lol yes they are wilful!! Very squeeze able though, where they are so cute.

sweetkitty · 25/10/2013 22:24

Dharma - that sounds awful hope he is better soon

Just started another thread about biting Nala is still as bad as she was at 8 weeks, is there something were doing wrong?

moosemama · 25/10/2013 22:30

Poor pup Dharma. Mint's advice is excellent.

Happy, Pip is 21 weeks tomorrow as well. Where did the time go? Shock

SallyBear · 25/10/2013 23:44

Dharma definitely get it checked out. So many nasty bugs that affect puppies. I lost a puppy years ago to Parvo. Horrible, so I am quite paranoid about it.

OP posts:
basildonbond · 26/10/2013 07:42

Welcome to all the new puppies and good luck for today, vicar

I hope your pup is feeling better dharma

Fitz has had a busy week - since starting to go out on Tuesday he's had a (short) walk every day, made a new puppy friend who lives a few doors down from us (gorgeous 4 month old whippet crossed with a bit of terrier - she just looks like a slightly sturdier whippet to me but apparently all the pups in the litter looked different from each other), and he's been to two puppy classes. I'd booked onto the kennel club registered classes where they do good citizen etc then I found out about a smaller class a bit nearer which dd can do as well so we thought we'd try them both out - he was a star and I realised when I read the puppy foundation class syllabus that he can already do everything on the list

Poor little thing is absolutely shattered! As soon as he'd done a wee and poo this morning he went straight back to bed and is now gently snoring Grin

SallyBear · 26/10/2013 08:18

We have my mum's 9yr old Labrador staying at the moment. Poor thing is knackered as an 18 week old Toby is very happy to badger her!
