Pointy hounds include-
Greyhounds (Grunds)
Whippets (Whippys)
Lurchers
Italian Greyhounds (Iggys)
Salukis
Afghans
And any others I have forgotten. If you are a new pointy hound owner, an old and experienced owner or looking into getting one of these fabulous creatures, come and have a seat (that's not taken up with a hound ).

Come The Day
Come the day I take that final bend,
Can I count on you to be my friend?
To see I?m treated just and fair,
It means so much to know you care.

For, what the future holds in store,
Now that I can race no more,
Should be addressed for every hound,
Who parts the punter from his pound.

Tell them I don?t ask for much,
A kindly word, a gentle touch,
Somewhere warm to lay my head,
A meal each day to keep me fed,
Not just life- but quality,
This is how it ought to be.

Do not see me swept away,
I long to live another day,
With peace of mind, tranquillity,
And those who care surrounding me,
So tell them all- you have that choice,
I beg of you to be my voice.

MrsW - I met a lovely wolfhound cross lurcher yesterday - Archie owned by Bellbird on Lurcher Link. Can I suggest that you post in 'advice needed' over there as there are lots of people with lots of different mixes of dogs over there.... Whilst the cushion is great, the greater number of people with a greater variety of dogs helps.

Mistlehound hardly stirred last night and has curled up to have some more snoozing. All the adrenalin really tires her out. What was really interesting was that when all the racing stopped and we had showing, out on the grass in the middle of the track, she settled down and worked out that everything had changed, the racing had stopped and she calmed down.

DS managed to get her to be the waggiest lurcher there - she came 2nd in that class as there was a terrier doing normal terrier tail action - and lurchers just can't compete!

mistlethrush · 15/09/2013 08:21

Actually, the only dog you couldn't just stroke there was a little pappillion thing...

cinnamongreyhound · 15/09/2013 08:53

I did a scruples form peanutpatty and they accepted me. Still haven't heard back from them since I emailed asking for specific dogs but there's no reason you wouldn't be accepted. Just sell yourself in the last box and wait Grin. When is your holiday? It took almost two weeks to hear from them and then they said we were on their list if possible adopters and to wait to hear from them unless we had a specific dog in mind so I don't think they're in a massive hurry!

PeanutPatty · 15/09/2013 09:10

I'm struggling with the PICK US PLEASE PICK US box.

cinnamongreyhound · 15/09/2013 09:31

I just wrote that all the positives that we already had a dog, I was at home most of the time, children would respect dog, we take peanut everywhere with us, walk him in the forest regularly, we've rescued before so understand teething problems, prepared to work on such problems. Can't think what else I wrote but it worked :)

MissBetseyTrotwood · 15/09/2013 11:13

Hi all!

Just popping back to the pointy cushion to share our news. All is well chez Trotwood and the hounds are both snoozing on sofa after the morning walk.

We are moving! House goes on the market vv soon. We've found a place in deepest Kent, with a big old garden for the hounds to run around in. It even has a purpose built dog enclosure with its own special drain to the cess pit. (Don't ask).

Wwyd re. viewings and large dogs? I searched and found another thread that advised in general to remove all trace of dog from the house entirely before viewings. But that doesn't feel right somehow.

moosemama · 15/09/2013 16:02

MrsW, your link didn't work and I'd love to see her/him.

Lurcherboy is part Deerhound, he has a very Deerhoundy head and I'm pretty sure his bombproof, steady nature comes from that part of his breeding. There can be absolutely chaos and mayhem going on around him and he will just stand there quiet, in his own little bubble, letting it all blow over him - fantastic for a family with 3 dcs like ours.

He definitely has the Saluki over-sensitivity as well though (Mum was first cross Deerhound/Saluki) which can mean he's a bit of a wimp sometimes.

MissBT, we did have to remove all doggie traces from our old house to sell it. We went for open days as much as possible, rather than individual viewings though, so we could get the whole house deep cleaned, set up and staged, then go out with the dogs and leave the Estate Agent to handle the viewings. On the odd occasion we had individual viewings we used to put the dogs in the car for half an hour with a kong each. I know what you mean about it not feeling right, but it is true that it's incredibly hard to sell a house that has even one dog in, let alone several large dogs. Much as we love our dogs and our homes, the reality is that we don't smell what non-dog-owning potential buyers do and doggie smell is really off-putting if you're not a dog owner yourself.

mistlethrush · 15/09/2013 16:51

If (when) we ever come to sell our house we're going to have to store stuff (ours) in any case just so that its slightly less cluttered... but we shall also put the dog's beds into the car and remove the dog for any viewings. Having open days sounds a good idea.

When we came round this house there were two pre-school children and not a single toy in sight... when I went back for a second viewing there were a few. However, there was not a single book in sight even then - and no bookshelves.

MissBetseyTrotwood · 15/09/2013 19:36

Looks as though they need to be OUT then! We may have an open house next weekend and if that's the case DH can take dogs and children out somewhere nice and I'll stay and greet the viewers nosey people who will open my cupboards.

Thanks Flowers

cinnamongreyhound · 16/09/2013 14:17

Counting down to the weekend, not sure what/if I should get anything as it's only a trial.

Thanks for the tip Mistlethrush, loving the puppy videos :). Also saw they are being fostered in Suffolk so that's handy if we go that way!

cinnamongreyhound · 16/09/2013 14:24

Also meant to say, hope you're feeling better moosemama and Pip is behaving himself Wink

moosemama · 16/09/2013 14:35

Thanks Cinammon.

I thought I was feeling better yesterday, but have felt awful all day today.

Pip was a total nightmare this morning while we were trying to get all three kids to school and dh off to his job interview. Yelled in his crate, yelled behind the dog gate and ultimately yelled on the back doorstep. Basically he was unimpressed that he had to wait for me to go on the school-run for breakfast as I wanted him to have it in a kong and treat toy, noisy little blighter. Hmm

He has redeemed himself though, as after his short carry to the park for some socialisation (wasted trip as only one dog/person turned up in the half an hour we were there) he came home and slept until dh got back from his interview at lunch time, then had a major case of the zoomies (but confined himself to his own toys and the big cardboard box I've given him to destroy) then went back to sleep in his crate, which is where he has been ever since. Phew!

moosemama · 16/09/2013 18:34

Pip is poorly. sad

He started retching as if he was going to throw up, I tried to usher him out of the living room at least onto the tiled kitchen floor, but he threw up an unfeasible amount of what looked like pure undigested kibble all the way across the room. It looked fine, just like he'd perhaps overloaded his stomach (we've been increasing his kibble to chicken ratio and he went onto just kibble today) so I didn't stop him clearing it up, as I know that's pretty normal for disgusterhounds. (Obviously I then disinfected the carpet anyway.)

Unfortunately, he then started to whine frantically and ran to the back door - shot up the garden like his life depended on it and literally fired diarrhoea across the lawn with incredible force. sad Followed by a major case of the zoomies - I think in panic at what just happened.

Checked it out, not sign of blood or mucus, but I've had to bleach the lawn, so that's going to be an interesting stripe.

He then curled up in his bed whingeing for a while, but has just been charging around the garden jumping on Lurcherboy's head, so can't be feeling that bad.

Have given him some probiotic paste and will go back to just chicken for a couple of days. He's due at the vets for his second vax on Wednesday - praying they don't cancel it again now.

I was saying to dh last night that the wind Pip was emitting smelled like raw chicken and I was worried it might be the campylobacter building up again - then this. Will keep a close eye on him this evening and if it happens again get him straight to the vets.

cinnamongreyhound · 16/09/2013 22:00

Oh no poor Pip, fingers crossed its not the campylobacter and that his jabs go ahead fine!

Had a lovely doggy run tonight and peanut didn't have to be dragged the last bit, think his stamina must be improving :)

Dozy dog jumped up when I got in from the school run and head butted my chin, I've now got a lump, bruise and cut :(

moosemama · 16/09/2013 22:26

Thanks cinnamon. He's been proper poorly all night and I was worried because he wasn't drinking, so went to syringe some water into his mouth - at which point he looked at me with a disgusted look on his face and went and had a nice long drink. He kept that down and has moved beds so he can stretch out in the big bed in the kitchen, so I'm hoping that's a good sign and he probably just ate something he shouldn't. He's a beggar for scraping up bits of mud to eat and scoffing leaves and other such debris. If I see him quickly enough I can get him to leave on cue now, but I really need to teach him the 'drop' cue so I can get him to relinquish his disgusting prizes.

Glad you had a good run with Peanut, not so good news about the headbutt though. My old boxer x gsd used to do that all the time and it blooming hurts - it's incredible how tough dogs' skulls are. Have you got some arnica you could use?

mistlethrush · 17/09/2013 08:44

Our collie/terrier cross used to bounce up vertically - and almost always timed it just as you were bending down to pet her - leading to her nose making contact with your eye socket. That was SO painful! We got a number of black eyes from her before we managed to stop that particular behaviour.

I hope that Pip is feeling better soon - it took at least 2 months to get mistlehound's stomach sorted out when we got her - I think part of it was stress too as well as the new food etc.

Someone got a lovely shot of DS and mistlehound on the Saturday - I'm going to try to get hold of it from them. I didn't manage to use my camera - I was trying to stop mistlehound bouncing, keeping an eye on what DS was doing and trying to sit down some of the time to help my ankle.

moosemama · 17/09/2013 11:34

Well, he threw up a chunk of the wicker basket I keep my baking tins in, then some bile, then went out for a wee and slept through the night without a peep.

This morning he seems fine, a bit tired maybe, but he's eaten some cooked chicken, is drinking fine and has passed a normal poo.

So, either he'd managed to scoff something disgusting in the garden that upset his stomach or the piece of basket was causing a blockage and once that had cleared he was ok. Either way ... phew!

Unfortunately, not being able to leave him with a busy buddy full of kibble this morning meant that despite having 2 kongs full of chicken and probiotic paste he starting yelling (and I mean yelling) 15 minutes after I left on the school run and kept it up until I got back 8 minutes later.

Ridiculously both kongs were still full, except for the plug of probiotic paste at the end. Gave them a quick squeeze and gave them back to him and then he emptied then in 10 minutes. Hmm Really hoping it's just because he's under the weather, but can't shift the feeling that it's horribly like Lurcherboy and his SA all over again.

mistlethrush · 17/09/2013 11:43

Moose, at least you know what worked for lurcherboy, have been there, done that, and safely out the other end (with lurcher boy) so if it is SA (rather than just puppish angst) you've already got a lot of good ideas on what to do etc. I bet it was the basket.

I did a homecheck the other night for someone contemplating a puppy - and pointed out what things in the room we were in might get chewed and how far up a puppy might get. I did agree that they could probably be trained not to get on the kitchen table - but it still means that they've been up on it to get trained not to be....

moosemama · 17/09/2013 12:00

I know, but I'm just a bit Sad Hmm Harrumph! about it all the same. I've done absolutely everything right, spent hours clicker training him so he loves his crate, he's not over-attached. Feel a bit like I'm living in groundhog day, what with this and the problems we're having with ds1 with school/transport.

... also not happy about being stuck in the house while we sort it out, as he can't go down outside for another 2 weeks, which really restricts where we can go, especially with him being so big and heavy now.

I had caught him chewing the corner of my basket but redirected him and thought he'd stopped doing it. Unfortunately it's enormous (basically the whole bottom shelf of a large kitchen trolley and contains all my baking tins so there's nowhere I can move it to. Dh is picking up some anti-chew spray today, but if he's anything like Oldgirl he'll probably like the taste. Hmm

He's generally pretty good and we make sure he has plenty of appropriate things to chomp on, but it seems he just can't resist that basket, as it kind of sticks out a little bit at his eye level and is therefore just too tempting. Have put a towel over it for now, so it's not as obvious and tempting every time he walks past.

mistlethrush · 17/09/2013 12:10

The thing that stopped the chinchilla attacking the skirting boards and door was hot chilli sauce. Really hot - and you don't need much and it didn't stain. Possibly just wiping a cut chilli on it would work.

PeanutPatty · 17/09/2013 18:52

Sorry to hear about poorly dogs and bumped chins and even more sorry to hear about poss SA. I reckon the basket got stuck too and upset his tum too. A couple of weeks ago we got home from an afternoon out and was whizzing Her Majesty out for a comfort break when as soon as her paws got outside the front door she promptly vomited. Lots of grass and bits of undigested paddywhack. Not sure if she was trying to be clean in the house or pure timing. Whatever the reason I'm glad it wasn't indoors!

Spotted a lovely big Luther yesterday. Big hair cream chap who was a tripod. Front one missing, which always makes me think it must be harder work to have a front and not a back missing. Also a relatively recent amputation as you could see the clipper tracks as the coat has yet to regrow fully and I thought I saw stitches were his elbow should have been. Flip me he was stunning. My husband commented on the size of the dog! Must have been Deerhound.

MrsW, those pups are stunning. Particularly the bitch you like.

Today we've been out in the rain for an hour and a half jumping in puddles and collecting sticks. That's just the dog! GrinI was tempted to bail on walking as had to take the DC with me and it was chucking down but I figured it wouldn't be as wet in the woods. WRONG. Oh well, the DC have wet weather gear and wellies. Nothing like fresh air and a dog walk to brighten the dullest of days. The dog's zoomies managed to terrify my youngest child. So not sure how I sort that out. Sad

Anyways, keep seeing lots of lovely whippets on an Fb group called whippet community. I love their noses I do!

Also spotted a gorgeous dog, must have been a small grey or mega whip, not sure which and didn't like to ask. My dog made rude introductions by shoving her nose in his privates much to the dog's disgust. Shock

moosemama · 17/09/2013 19:12

Better news this evening. Was out for longer this afternoon, as the junior teachers decided it would be fun to leave the parents standing outside in torrential rain for ten minutes while they finished their lesson, as it was interrupted by a fire drill Hmm BUT, not only was Pip quiet for the whole time, he was still eating his kongs when I got back.

So it seems this morning was probably down to him still feeling a bit off-colour and he's definitely back to normal now, as he's been fruit-loop this afternoon and is now jumping around on Lurcherboy's head barking his head off trying to get him to play. Grin

How come everyone else can get MrsW's link to work except me? Humpf!

cinnamongreyhound · 17/09/2013 19:21

It doesn't work for me either, I just get an i in the web address bit.
