Pointy hounds include-
Greyhounds (Grunds)
Whippets (Whippys)
Lurchers
Italian Greyhounds (Iggys)
Salukis
Afghans
And any others I have forgotten. If you are a new pointy hound owner, an old and experienced owner or looking into getting one of these fabulous creatures, come and have a seat (that's not taken up with a hound ).

Come The Day
Come the day I take that final bend,
Can I count on you to be my friend?
To see I?m treated just and fair,
It means so much to know you care.

For, what the future holds in store,
Now that I can race no more,
Should be addressed for every hound,
Who parts the punter from his pound.

Tell them I don?t ask for much,
A kindly word, a gentle touch,
Somewhere warm to lay my head,
A meal each day to keep me fed,
Not just life- but quality,
This is how it ought to be.

Do not see me swept away,
I long to live another day,
With peace of mind, tranquillity,
And those who care surrounding me,
So tell them all- you have that choice,
I beg of you to be my voice.

Heads up! More dogs available to rescue on Scruples.

moosemama · 17/09/2013 21:50

Ah it's the MTAR pups. They are rather gorgeous aren't they.

PeanutPatty · 17/09/2013 21:57

I think it's the same ones. Probably got it wrong!

cinnamongreyhound · 17/09/2013 21:58

I love Hallie on scruples, if Lola turns out not to be ok with the cats I will definitely contact them about her but still haven't heard about my original email about Honey. Very cute Peanutpatty :)

Scuttlebutter · 17/09/2013 23:14

So who's going to the Great Greyhound Gathering this weekend?

PeanutPatty · 17/09/2013 23:53

Where is it Scuttle?

Scuttlebutter · 18/09/2013 00:37

Nottingham Racecourse, Peanut.

cinnamongreyhound · 18/09/2013 06:48

I had considered it but now we will have Lola, I don't think it'd be fair to travel so far :(

mistlethrush · 18/09/2013 08:27

Does she have trouble travelling Cinnamon?

What basis is the trial on - are you effectively fostering to see if it works? We only had the things that we had left from mistledog - and she wasn't a pointy so mistlehound wasn't particularly impressed. She will now use the memory foam mattress if it has another (1/4 of a duvet in a cover) bed on top - and she can fold herself up small and lie in the solid basket that we had too (that had been in the garage but we got it out and put some duvet in) but normally its duvet beds that move around to where she wants to sleep (or where we want her to sleep). If we're travelling and sleeping away, she lies on her bed in the car and then that is transferred to where she'll sleep - sort of 'have bed, will travel'.

I don't know what I'm going to do about Peterborough - I think I'll make sure I have a duvet in her cordura cover so that I can put it down on the field and it will be soft and stop the damp - so that she can sit at the back of stalls or wherever I'm needed.

(In case anyone is wondering, big lurcher event on 12/ 13 Oct with lots happening including different sorts of racing (including straight), 'field' agility (over bales), show classes etc)(Its held at the East of England show ground and there is a big show that weekend, so there's plenty to see)

We're going to have to extend the side gate - for 10 months she's been fine - now she's going over the top every now and then to see if she can scavenge where the cats have been I think.

cinnamongreyhound · 18/09/2013 14:21

She gets travel sick but the lady thinks a lot of it is because she's anxious so recommends lots of short trips. I don't mind clearing up the sick but worry about her feeling awful the whole time :(

We are just trailing her with the cats mainly. If she's ok with them we don't intend to take her back! We think she's lovely but we don't want her terrorising the cats for the next few months.

Keep seeing things on LL about Peterborough so I guessed something was going on :)

mistlethrush · 18/09/2013 14:35

We cured our first dog's car sickness - both she and I got given Phenergan. It stopped both of us being sick - and we both got off it eventually. She had been given all the veterinary options which didn't do any good - and could be sick on a 5 min drive. We had her from 7 wks too so clearly not stress. She was fine once she got over it though. In fact, she had a cast iron constitution and could eat absolutely anything - including large quantities of marzipan and icing at christmas and or 2lbs of Dorset Blue Vinney in a single sitting - all with no consequence whatsoever.

cinnamongreyhound · 18/09/2013 18:03

I saw you post that before I think Mistlethrush, we'll see how bad she is but its definitely an option.

I would think that, once she's over the teething and naughty nippy age, she's much less likely to bite than, say, a Yorkie or JR. Can't help on the other bits though....

cinnamongreyhound · 18/09/2013 21:50

I think anything that requires time/money/change to home balance will make you wobble. I'm thinking the opposite about size, not had a little dog in ages! Monthly costs aren't massively increased, I don't think. We were recommended a puppy to be safer with the kids as they will grow up with them and you can train how you want them to be but we want to rescue an adult. Peanuts recall is getting better by the day Grin and I've only been letting him off a couple of months so I reckon you could work wonders with a pup.

I had a wobble today as the lady we're getting Lola from posted pics of the pups we looked at on fb today. They're so cute and I can see positives but we really didn't want a puppy, maybe when kids are older.

mistlethrush · 18/09/2013 22:57

I couldn't cope with a puppy - and it would drive DH mad (he's the one that's at home all day). Mistlehound has resigned herself to sleeping during the day whilst he's working - he's around but isn't exactly stimulating company for the dog. We get greeted as though she's been on her own since getting back from her walk. You couldn't expect a puppy to do that....

cinnamongreyhound · 19/09/2013 06:57

Peanut is a total loon when we get home but when I'm home all day he does move off the sofa unless I go upstairs! No stimulation required Wink

cinnamongreyhound · 19/09/2013 07:00

Doesn't move not does, must proof read!

You know that you shouldn't run any distance with a young dog MrsW? Apparently need to leave it until they're 2 or so.

cinnamongreyhound · 19/09/2013 08:25

Apparently Lola keeps up with all the big dogs so don't let size affect how you view how far they'll run. Sounds like she'll go further than peanut at the moment.
I thought it was a year mistlethrush?

I've seen 2 yrs suggested for decent lengths - it must depend on how far you're going surely?

The judge on Sat said mistlehound was (a lot) overweight. And that he had a 10yr old dog that was more in shape than her. And that they regularly were out walking for 3 hrs a day. And that I should get on my bike and take her out with that too. You can feel all her ribs clearly (although there is a definite covering) and she has HUGE thigh muscles as it is... I know that she's not really lean - but not sure that she needs to be... But I am making sure that I take her out for a brisk walk every evening when I get back to increase her exercise a bit. We went out when it was already dark last night and walked round the streets nearby - reasonable lighting, quiet residential area, so quite pleasant - and she likes looking for the cats. If she sees one she just stops and points and quivers. Grin

cinnamongreyhound · 19/09/2013 11:35

I've read to start at 1 and build them up. Peanuts definitely increasing in stamina but he's already 2. Lola is almost one and hasn't been running with a person as such but chases balls and other dogs around the beach regularly!

Peanut has massive thighs and Nelly did even though she was down to 15min in the morning and sometimes no more than 10min in the evenings for walks. If you are concerned I would have thought cutting back food would be more effective than walking more briskly but I'm sure she'll enjoy the walks more than eating less Wink. Weight range for lurchers must be massive depending on what their mix is?
