Properly unusual dog names

Csn you share any you have come Across? Not just 'funny' names like Dave or Stanley, which are now common but actual unique names.

I've worked with dogs for 20 years, come across most names several times! We are about to get our first ever puppy after all our rescues so get to name it! Names I've come across recently as examples include Fleece, Pye, Valiant and Worthy.

I won't tell you what we're getting for now so it doesn't influence suggestions!

Ours was called Happy..cos she was

janetaylia · 16/08/2013 17:37

i owned a rottweiler called Filthy. he was brilliant.

Whippoorwhill · 17/08/2013 12:51

My Curly is called Rain. I didn't think it was particularly unusual but people often comment on it.

If we'd ended up with a boy puppy he would have been Ludo.

toysintheattic · 17/08/2013 18:41

My dog's name is Hershey, popular one in North America but not so much here! Always wanted a chocolate lab -- he isn't quite, but had the name chosen already Smile

Right , I think we are on Bay, Drift (not sure if it was mentioned on this thread or another one!) or DH still likes Rupert (meh).

It's for a Ridgeback dog btw. Thoughts?

Met a little dog called Trotsky the other day.

Also have met Cato (as in the pink panther), Crumble and Diesel.

I think two syllable names are easier to shout out.

GetYourMoneyBackAtTheDoor · 19/08/2013 20:25

Yes, the two syllable thing bothers me too. Trotsky is unusual but I don't like it! Cato is good. Diesel is pretty common I think.

I actually named my children with less thought than this Grin

My pup is called Baldrick Smile . I also know a dog called Spinach...the toddler in that house calls him Pinach which sounds uber cute.

sebastianthesingingaubergine · 22/08/2013 06:46

A Ridgeback needs a good strong name doesn't it. I don't think Rupert cuts it.

I like Cato, have met a few though.

Just googled strong names! How about Griffin, Thorn or Quinton?

JemimaPuddle · 22/08/2013 06:49

Simon is a good name for a ridgeback :)

sebastianthesingingaubergine · 22/08/2013 06:50

Out of your preferred names I like Drift the most.

GetYourMoneyBackAtTheDoor · 23/08/2013 21:03

I like Simon too but we know a human one quite well so that would be weird!

We have a black cat called Darwin! Darry for short, it suits him. I also know female ridgeback puppy called Rosie. The colour of the coat is lovely, like Red dog in the film, also like the colour of our own dog's coat (Mishka - Russian for teddy bear we believe). I like Ludo too.

trashcanjunkie · 24/08/2013 13:27

Fallow
Roe
Sika

(named after deer types I think)

zizza · 25/08/2013 12:54

We always go for non-human names - current three are Zephyr, Gimble and Tartu

Zephyr - a balmy wind! Or a model of old car
Gimble - the thing under a gyroscope that keeps it level. Or in the Jabberwocky "did gyre and gimble in the wabe" (I fancy Gyre next time)
Tartu - the city in Estonia where my eldest son lives and works as a ballet dancer! (but he gets called Tarty - the dog that is, not my son!)

FannyMcNally · 25/08/2013 13:09

One- offs I've known

Topeka, Boise and Trenton
Rip
Spam
Andrew
La La Cotton Top

I have a Cav called Princess

GetYourMoneyBackAtTheDoor · 25/08/2013 13:47

Darwin was on my longer short list, it's very relevant to my work! I also fancied beagle after Darwin's ship but that would be a bit too unusual perhaps!

I love all the deer ones. Dh is a bit dull when it comes to names and DS1 is championing 'Ben'. Good grief, I've got my work cut out!

I have a Gozo, named after the island, and his kennel name is Gomez so it works with that as well, never met another one, but lots of people think it's Gizmo because he looks like a gremlin. Grin

LadyTurmoil · 25/08/2013 14:23

Typhoon
Tetley
Whisky
Vodka

MadeOfStarDust · 26/08/2013 08:52

We have a Westie called Whisky!

My friend had a big lab girl called Nugo - "Bitch" in some far eastern language.....

FredaFanakapan · 13/09/2013 20:20

Many years ago we had a corgi called George. He was a black and white Pembroke corgi with a great personality. His ears never 'stood up' for some reason. Because of the way he pranced along on his little legs my Dad called him 'Trotwood Copperfield'.... Grin

My lovely neighbour, sadly now in a nursing home, used to have a boxer called Buster.

Friends have labs - Ben and Nevis .....

TheTempest · 15/09/2013 01:23

We've got a Bracken.

One of the pups is called Ozymandius as its linked to our/DP's last name.

My cat is called Figgy (figaro) though Grin
