When do you take pups water bowl off them during the night

I've never taken a water bowl away- I always thought they should have access to clean water constantly.

I seem to remember some puppy books suggesting leaving just icecubes down at night so the dog didn't glug loads and wee all night but I didn't, esp with them on dried food and we had an older dog as well who is partial to snacking.and midnight feasts.

IMHO they wee overnight until they grow out of it, like children.

Never remove their water. Dogs should always have access to a bowl of water. Removing it doesn't help with housetraining if that's the reason you are considering it.

I have never removed water. I don't remember my dog drinking much at night as a pup, though, either.

My pup doesnt have water at night, mainly because if i put a bowl of water in his crate he gets in it and tips it all over his bedding and then crys because its wet , he does have a drink before i put him to bed and as soon as i get up (which is often 4am).

Oops - mine doesn't either.

He has a sort of routine which is an indicator to me that he is about to zonk for the night. He circles the kitchen sniffing a bit, walks to his water bowl, has the biggest drink I have ever seen (if he could lift the bowl with his front paws and drain it he would, it's full) then walks into his crate and flops in his bed.

He then comes out of the crate, does a smaller circle and then goes back in and flops for good.

In the morning, he never has a drink first thing, in fact, if you put his water bowl down he gives you a look of digust as if to say 'balls to that, where's my grub woman!' First drink he has will be a muddy puddle on a walk!

I love our dog so wouldn't wish him any harm but I don't think I am causing him any issues.

i'd never remove water from any animal. if you have a problem with a pup or a dog tipping a bowl over in their crate then either use a mug put into the corner or else buy a clip on bowl.

young animals especially require a lot of fluids - just get up more often to let them out.

Ok, will supply water tonight. Decision wasn't on toilet reasons, rather observation of his routine.

My pup spills water in his crate too, he seems fine though. By the time it gets warmer I am hoping he wont be in his crate...

Mine doesn't rush to get a drink in the morning either, i think as long as they drink plenty during the day they shouldn't need to drink in the night (mine drinks loads during the day), if i put a mug in the corner he would knock it over, if he had one that clips to his crate he would put his paws in it and go crazy, he loves water but is very messy with it, he manages to get it all across the living room whilst drinking from his bowl . Im sure if he wanted a drink in the night he would wake me up as he is very noisy when he wants something.

I've always left mine with water and he normally has a drink between 12.30 and 01.00 am ,as I can hear him slurping away . He has two water bowls indoors but only drinks out of the one in his bedroom ,never from the one next to his food bowl ,very strange . Also prefers any dirty water he can find in the garden.

My pup does not have access to water in her crate at night. I never even thought about this tbh! She seems fine and not at all desperate for a drink in the morning.

Mine's 18 months and he has constant access to clean water.

IMO it's very cruel to deprive of water over night

I can assure you i am not cruel to my dog at all. Where in a crate would it go? Her bed fills up all the available space. She drinks plenty in the day - has access to water at all times. She just doesn't have it at night or if i leave her for a while in her crate when i go out (usually very short time).

I have absolutely no problem fitting a mug with water into my dogs crate! She's never spilled anything!

Sorry but animals should never be without fresh, clean water in a very clean bowl or drinker

Naysa - very cruel in what context? Today I walked with a lady who rescued a lurcher 4 years ago, who had been found hanging from a tree, stabbed and covered in cigarette burns. Or the lady I met a few weeks ago who rescued her springer who had been bricked up for 7 years in a shed by a farmer and the rats had eaten her back legs away because she wasn't good enough to be worked.

My puppy is asleep on my legs now, having had 2 wonderful walks in the woods today with doggy friends. We have also played in the garden, trained loads, he's eaten extremely expensive kibble and had a chicken leg for his tea. He's been cuddled and hugged and loved.

At no point has he ever indicated that he's thirsty when he wakes up, he's never cried at night at all. Usually it's at least an hour after he wakes up before he drinks and he sleeps for nearly 10 hours at night. He wees frequently during the day.

What aspect of my dog ownership is cruel can you tell me?

Oh I am also going to the vets for the third time this week in the morning and gave taken unpaid leave from work to do so?

If you could just enlighten me a little how my puppy is ill treated then I am all ears.

Even the RSPCA (and they are not known for great welfare standards) state that dogs should have access to water at all times. Why withhold it?

You can get bowls that do not tip up if the dog is in a crate. It is hard to tell a puppy you have to drink now as you can not have a drink for the next 8 hours why would you withhold a basic requirement?

I cant see how its cruel? if they sleep through the night then why would they need a drink? my pup is now sleeping through, when he wasnt he would wake me up and i would let him out for a wee and a drink, he doesn't need that now. He drinks at least 2 bowls of water during the day which is plenty, my other dog hardly drinks anything (her choice) and she's fine.
