I have one of these bowls

Hmm - I always lift water at about 7 - offer another drink before bed time and don't leave it down overnight until fully house trained. Was advised by breeder (who is also very well respected dog trainer) to do so. All our dogs seem to have survived - and all puppies have gone through night ok in crate all night from the start. Sorry to be controversial - but I don't think it's cruel. Please don't shoot me down though!!

Wouldn't occur to me to take water away tbh. Why would you?

littlewhitebag · 28/02/2013 19:45

I don't take her water away - it is always in exactly the same place. But she is shut in her crate over night - she is asleep so why would she want water? She goes to bed around 10 with access to water right up till then and she is up at 5.30/6 ish for breakfast. Often she goes out for her business, eats and goes right back to bed for another few hours without touching her water.

fanoftheinvisibleman · 28/02/2013 19:46

I have never lifted my pups water, I keep a bowl in his crate and he has only spilt it a couple of times. He has been dry overnight since 9 weeks. He does drink a lot.

littlewhitebag · 28/02/2013 19:50

I will try an experiment tonight. I will put a cup of water in the corner of her crate tonight and mark the level. I will report back the findings tomorrow. Very scientific this is!

needastrongone · 28/02/2013 19:51

Because I don't think my dogs needs it. This might not apply to all dogs it it applies to mine. If he lacked energy during the day or didn't urinate frequently or was constipated etc etc etc. he doesn't and isn't so I can't worry about this, I worry about enough with him.

I usually take a glass of water to bed, can't remember dh ever doing in 16 years. We are individuals.

idirdog · 28/02/2013 20:24

Blimey you lot are petty Confused What is the problem with just leaving the puppy with some water Shock The puppy may not drink it but if they are thirsty they can - no biggy.

Incidentally if the puppy is thirsty the drink will not make them wee more anyway.

Life is way too short for this.........

needastrongone · 28/02/2013 20:39

What is the problem with us all making our own individual choices based on our own individual knowledge of the needs of our dog?

Thanks, I don't recall insulting you, I merely stipulated what works for our puppy.

Naysa · 28/02/2013 21:13

needastrongone grow up! Did I say it waa the worst thing you could do? No I didn't. Do you often try and guilt people with the cruelty you've seen? Mature Hmm

Depriving an animal of water is IMO cruel yes. Did I say it was comparible to hurting? No.

The OP asked a question. People have given their opinions. So why are you taking it upon yourself to try and shut people up by saying it's nothing?

SconeInSixtySeconds · 28/02/2013 21:18

I have a litter brother and sister yes, insanity, I was pg and the bitch doesn't drink at bedtime and has an enormous drink in the morning and the dog had a huge drink at bedtime and doesn't drink in the morning until 10am.

So my conclusive result is: it depends. Hth.

needastrongone · 28/02/2013 21:43

Er, wasn't trying to shut anybody up.

When I think of the word cruel and dogs I do genuinely think of worse than not leaving water overnight after assessing what's right for your own dog. That's why I asked for context. You have provided that clarity, thankyou.
