Pointy hounds include-
Greyhounds (Grunds)
Whippets (Whippys)
Lurchers
Italian Greyhounds (Iggys)
Salukis
Afghans
And any others I have forgotten. If you are a new pointy hound owner, an old and experienced owner or looking into getting one of these fabulous creatures, come and have a seat (that's not taken up with a hound).

Jake
I didn?t really want you,
I wasn?t really sure,
And I?ll admit I had my doubts,
When you first came through that door.

Not small, or cute, or fluffy,
With big, soft puppy eyes,
But tall, and thin, and bony,
With bald, pink, bulging thighs.

You weren?t the kind I had in mind,
Not in any way,
?Perhaps it would be better if I took you back today,
Before we know each other,
It really won?t be kind,
To keep you here for one more day,
And then to change my mind.?

But against my better judgement, I decided you could stay,
And quickly I discovered you were kind in every way,
Your gentleness and patience, they really stole the show,
?Why these dogs are wonderful, I must let others know!?

For you?re my gentle giant,
Who just needed the chance,
To show us all what you could be,
To wipe away that history,
And dispel our preconceptions, which put us all to shame,
And so we come to know and love,
What lies beneath that frame.

And now I?ve come to understand,
What I missed right at the start,
That greyhounds need that great deep chest,
To house their great big hearts!

Cinnamon she sounds like she was a wonderful friend, don't worry about making the thread miserable, it's all part and parcel of owning a dog and I think we all understand that :) share anything you wish, it's always lovely to hear about Grund escapades :o

We've had a lovely day today, we all went to Clumber park and had a great long walk around the lake, Sprocket was so interested in all the new sniffs he forgot to be growly at other dogs! I was really impressed with his excellent behaviour :o

moosemama · 26/05/2013 17:33

Envy at Clumber Park walk. Well done Sprocket for being on your best behaviour. Smile

(I love the name Sprocket by the way - I always used to say I'd call my first dog Sprocket after the one in Fraggle Rock - but fate intervened and our first dog was one we found close to death in the local park and was named according the sound she responded to best.)

We've been all been over the fields today. Met a couple of non-pointy dogs, then walked back to via the village for ice-creams all round. Lurcherboy managed to chomp his way through an entire hip pouch of training treats - we're working on loose lead walking, hoping to have refined it a little before I have two to walk again - and has been conked out on the quarry tiles in the kitchen trying to cool down ever since we got back. Grin

I've been working my way through watching the Kikopup clicker training videos on YouTube and finding it really useful for refreshing my training skills. Think I might need to find some higher value treats though. Currently using air dried liver and garlic treats and cheese - but am thinking I might need to up the ante to turkey sausages they're super greasy and smelly and my old dogs used to trip over themselves to get a tiny scrap.

TheCunnyFunt · 26/05/2013 18:29

Thanks Moose :) he used to be called Brett but we never used it, I just thought Sprocket was an awsome name :o I'd never heard of Fraggle Rock until I told people what he was called and they'd go 'Oh like Sprocket off Fraggle Rock?'
DPs suggestion was Gillette, like the razor!

Have you tried Liver cake? There's about 750g of it all cubed up in our freezer and I just take a handful out when my hip pouch needs topping up :o

cinnamongreyhound · 26/05/2013 18:44

Ds1 would love sprocket as its a character from skylanders! I watched fraggle rock but I don't remember a sprocket in it.

Just been out for late lunch with my family for my mums birthday and there were two greyhounds in the garden. Que large amounts of tears but when I had composed myself I went over to say hello. They'd come from a local show and were very chatty owners. The girl was only a year and dh was all over her! The lady also had an older brindle boy who was just sprawled out in the grass. She volunteers at one of the local retired greyhound trust.

moosemama · 26/05/2013 19:10

I've used liver cake a lot in the past, but I hate cooking it and have to do it at my mum's because I really can't bear cooking it in my oven. Blush

I will do, if nothing else works - but if there's a less bluegh option in terms of prep, I would prefer it. [wimpy vegetarian emoticon] Actually, the lovely lady that makes and sells the air dried liver treats I buy also does liver cake to order - so that might be a way round it. She donates to Scruples from her sales as well.

We've been mulling over names for our prospective pup. Dh doesn't like any of the names I like. I like Seren for a bitch and either Jasper or Dexter for a boy. My dses are split, with one liking Jasper and the other Dexter . Dd is fixed on Wordsworth - after the dog in Jamie and the Magic Torch. Hmm

I know the pup will most likely bring it's own name or be obviously a particular name when he/she eventually arrives - but it's fun mulling it over in the meantime. Smile

TheCunnyFunt · 26/05/2013 21:22

Cinnamon that must've been difficult for you, you were perfectly entitled to have a cry, I think any of us would have done the same in your shoes!

Moose I think all 3 of those names are great, especially love Dexter!

Talking about hip pouches reminded me about this morning, I couldn't find mine, could not for the LIFE of me remember what I'd done with it after I took it off my belt. Searched EVERYWHERE I could think of. Then I went to put something in the bin I thought 'Hmmm, wonder if it's in there?' lifted up an empty crisp packet and lo and behold, my pouch! FUCK knows why I put it in the bin Confused

Scuttlebutter · 26/05/2013 21:35

Hello all - back from a very exciting day at the Greyhound Extravaganza. Smile Really hot, and masses of grunds as far as the eye could see - awesome! Also a fine collection of Salukis, lurchers, whippies, iggies and assorted other woofs but mainly greys. Fantastic day and now we are all exhausted, and I'm drinking a very large gin. Grin Succumbed to the lure of collar porn and came home wiht a new martingale for one of the boys. Smile

cinnamongreyhound · 26/05/2013 21:43

Sounds lovely scuttlebutter! I just love seeing greyhounds anywhere. There is a greyhound walk every few months in our local country park, it always makes me smile. Although we had to make sure we'd walked Nelly before it started as that many people would have stressed her too much.

I have relented and we are going to see some retired greyhounds tomorrow. I expect it will take a while for us to actually get one and I've told dh that I'm not making any promises I'll see how I feel when I get there. The boys are excited about it and I'm really nervous!

moosemama · 26/05/2013 21:49

Cunny, thank you - you have great taste in names! Wink Grin

I think I need a bigger treat pouch judging by lurcherboy's intake today. He was just so happy to be going over the fields with the whole family all together, that I was having to reinforce loose lead and returning to my side all the way there. The boys were complaining about how long it was taking, but I soon shut them up by pointing out that, if they want a pup they'd better get used to it, because it can take half an hour to take 5 steps when they're first learning - don't think they believed me though. (I still have vivid memories of hours spent walking up and down our drive teaching oldgirl to walk on a loose lead and that was over 13 years ago!)

He was good as gold once we'd exhausted him on the way back though, which was lucky, because the pouch was empty by then. Hmm

Glad you had a good day Scuttle.

Can I expose my ignorance and ask - what's an iggie? I know all the others - even know what a whirrier is, but never heard of an iggie before. Blush Confused

moosemama · 26/05/2013 21:51

Good luck tomorrow cinnamon. Hope it goes ok.

TheCunnyFunt · 26/05/2013 22:55

Good luck Cinnamon, I hope it goes ok for you.

Moose, an Iggy is an IG - Italian Greyhound, the tiniest of sighthounds. They look very very breakable :o

moosemama · 26/05/2013 23:00

Doh - of course, Italian Greyhound. I think I just hadn't thought of them because you don't see many around - although there are two that live just up the road from me.

cinnamongreyhound · 26/05/2013 23:17

Oh my goodness how cute :)

Scuttlebutter · 27/05/2013 09:51

There were some lovely Iggies at the event yesterday. Smile

Cinnamon, hope your kennel visit goes well today - good luck.

cinnamongreyhound · 27/05/2013 12:48

We have reserved a black boy called Billy. He's 5 1/2, the boys loved playing with him in the paddock, he walked lovely on the lead and loved all the attention. I even had a little run with him and he didn't go crazy so maybe I will have a running buddy. Dh fell in love with him straight away and all three boys thought he was great. It was lovely spending time with him but now we're on our way home I do feel quite anxious, not really sure why. All I did while we were there was talk about Nelly, so lovely to be with people who have a passion for greyhounds :)

Scuttlebutter · 27/05/2013 13:33

It's OK to be nervous and a bit anxious, Cinnamon - I think it's entirely natural, and I'd be more worried if you weren't. Taking on a dog is always a big step, and it sounds as though you are giving it a lot of thought and care. It's also a big emotional event - even though Nelly's gone, your love for her hasn't (and never will) and seeing other greyhounds, no matter how wonderful, will always stir up feelings, some very sweet, some painful. The rescue will be used to people feeling these emotions - in fact, they will have lost dogs themselves and I could take you to people right now who are involved in rescue full time but still miss their own dogs and have wobbles. Don't rush, be kind to yourself.

Sending a virtual hug.

Having a running buddy will be great - DH loves running with two of ours - not at the same time I mean - but with two of the four. And one of the greys from Shropshire and Borders RGT ran a 10K race with her owner last week. I was v impressed.

cinnamongreyhound · 27/05/2013 18:11

I did a 10k at the end of march and there were 20-30 dogs running it. One lady with two together which was a bit scary when I had one each side of me and knew the lead was behind my legs! If organised well dogs and races are great I think. They were good as gold and about 5 mins before start they all started barking, getting very excited I think. A lady from my club ran it with her lurcher (who looks totally like a greyhound) and he loved it. He's only 2 and full of beans but a lovely boy!

Blippetyblip · 27/05/2013 22:41

Good luck if you get your new boy Cinnamon - so sorry to hear about Nelly. I am dreading when the time comes for my Ed although hopefully not for a while yet.

Best wishes

cinnamongreyhound · 27/05/2013 22:54

Think I can link to him, try this

It has been a hard day, we had a bbq and she would always lay on the grass as close as she dared waiting for dh to drop something! Also no bank holiday family walk in the country park. I took my boys yesterday and just walking into the forest was horrible. Went for a run tonight and had a little chat with her and I've been through some of my photos and made a Nelly folder to flick through them all together. Still can't believe how quickly she was taken from me.

Hope you've all had lovely bank holidays with your lovely pointy hounds :)

Scuttlebutter · 27/05/2013 23:34

Oh Cinnamon he's lovely! Another one from the Top Honcho lines (very prolific sire).

The charity he's with were about two stalls over from us at the Greyhound EXtravaganza - we had the ice cream van between us and it did a roaring trade as most people were buying ice cream for their dogs! Grin Anyway, they had a beautiful black boy with them who I was admiring - they had a big van with lots of lovely hounds, but the black one attracted my attention as he looks quite like our Andy and Cunny's Sprocket. I'm now wondering if it was Billy!

TheCunnyFunt · 27/05/2013 23:44

Ooh gorgeous Billy! And what a fab name, Ice Cool Billy. He'll be the second Billy on the cushion, the other one is also black :)

cinnamongreyhound · 28/05/2013 07:09

Yes it was scuttlebutter, they said he was at a show all day Sunday and was a very good boy. He's so much bigger than my Nelly!

cinnamongreyhound · 28/05/2013 07:21

That was in Newmarket I assume? I didn't know about it until afterwards, I called the lady Joanne to ask about visiting and she was at a show so couldn't talk much. Was lovely yesterday as we had look at the website and one that we had looke at went for a walk as we arrived and was reserved and a little lady she recommended for us as well who dss wanted to walk after Billy was taken out while we were playing with him was also reserved so hopefully 3 lovely dogs have new homes soon. Some other came and took two black girls and a blue one for a walk and wanted none :(
Do you go to the greyhound walks in Brandon country park Scuttlebutter or were you travelling a way to get to the extravaganza?

Blippetyblip · 28/05/2013 08:44

Billy looks great Cinnamon. My Ed is also from Top Honcho lines - they are gorgeous
