Pointy hounds include-
Greyhounds (Grunds)
Whippets (Whippys)
Lurchers
Italian Greyhounds (Iggys)
Salukis
Afghans
And any others I have forgotten. If you are a new pointy hound owner, an old and experienced owner or looking into getting one of these fabulous creatures, come and have a seat (that's not taken up with a hound).

I didn?t really want you,
I wasn?t really sure,
And I?ll admit I had my doubts,
When you first came through that door.

Not small, or cute, or fluffy,
With big, soft puppy eyes,
But tall, and thin, and bony,
With bald, pink, bulging thighs.

You weren?t the kind I had in mind,
Not in any way,
?Perhaps it would be better if I took you back today,
Before we know each other,
It really won?t be kind,
To keep you here for one more day,
And then to change my mind.?

But against my better judgement, I decided you could stay,
And quickly I discovered you were kind in every way,
Your gentleness and patience, they really stole the show,
?Why these dogs are wonderful, I must let others know!?

For you?re my gentle giant,
Who just needed the chance,
To show us all what you could be,
To wipe away that history,
And dispel our preconceptions, which put us all to shame,
And so we come to know and love,
What lies beneath that frame.

And now I?ve come to understand,
What I missed right at the start,
That greyhounds need that great deep chest,
To house their great big hearts!

Oh and I apparently need to ask vet to check if she has a microchip - which again she should have. Am suspecting when I ask tomorrow she won't have one.

MagratGarlik · 21/05/2013 21:46

We'd love to be going to Newmarket, (despite lack of a grund), but I'm working this weekend.

Youhand, hope shy dog feels better soon.
Cunny, the vision of Sprocket in my mind made me laugh!

mistlethrush · 21/05/2013 23:22

Yourhand - LL have a friendly show in Halifax on Saturday I think - check out the LL forum for info - lurcher based, but others will be welcomed I'm sure. They have racing once a month which is good fun too - we go - again, info on forum.

BehindLockNumberNine · 24/05/2013 08:00

Hello my lovelies,

Sorry I have not been on here again for ages, what with work, the dc, their activities, a whippety dog and all sorts of other madness going on I find I rarely have the time to sit.....

Can I be really cheeky? Can those of you with fb please clicky this link, then click on COMPETITION ENTRY ALBUM and then hit LIKE on Sam's picture? (for those of you that don't know Sam, he is the rescued whippety with the pointy ears)
I really really really want to win the portrait of him for dh's birthday but Sam is up agains some very stiff competition (mainly from a chicken!! Grin )

Thanks and sorry for asking Blush

Half term next week so when we are back from our weekend away I am going to sit with a cuppa and catch up on this thread...

TheCunnyFunt · 24/05/2013 08:32

YourHand I hope shydog is better, poor thing. Must be awful to be

MagratGarlik · 24/05/2013 11:19

Behind, I've done it. Love his collar.

YourHandInMyHand · 24/05/2013 12:22

Behind - I have liked the pic for you, Sam is very cute. Smile

ShyDog seems a little livelier today so hopefully she's feeling better.

YourHandInMyHand · 24/05/2013 12:29

Anyone else's pointies not want to go out in the rain? Shydog is not impressed by today's downpour and begrudgingly went in the garden, she keeps giving me mucky looks as if the weather is my fault. Hmm Grin

moosemama · 24/05/2013 12:50

Grin I've had a couple of dogs that don't like going out in the rain.

Lurcherboy isn't too bad with rain, but loathes the wind and it's blowing a gale here today. The dcs have an inset day today and were promised a walk across the fields. They're now all in a strop because I've told them we will only be going to the park instead, as it's more sheltered and Lurcherboy will be wholeheartedly unimpressed if I take him across the fields in a howling gale - he's such a wuss! Hmm Grin

My old Wheaten girl used to flatly refuse to go outside if it was raining, I would have to either pick her up and carry her to the lawn or give her a nudge off the back step, where she'd do a quick wee on the path and dart straight back to bed. She used to do the filthy looks as if I'd made it rain as well. Grin

Good to hear ShyDog is feeling better.

Behind, I'm not on FB so couldn't like your picture - but did go and have a peek anyway. What a gorgeous face!

I am very Envy of those going to shows over the next couple of weekends. We have a very boring family party this weekend and then Legoland next weekend.

June isn't much better, but things should settle down by the end of the month and I can possibly start getting some homechecks done.

Dh and I have drawn up a list of things we'd like to get done before the pup arrives if possible and I have ordered a stack of books to read. Hoping this will help pass the time, but a bit worried that dh will use not having completed everything on the list as a means of procrastination. Hmm

We had a long talk last weekend about whether or not he really wants a pup, as I felt he wasn't on board but he surprised me and said he's quite excited about it, but wants to do it right and not jump into anything with hearts ruling heads, iyswim. Which I suppose I can't argue with. I did put my foot down when he suggested waiting until next Spring though. Lurcherboy is really fed up without a friend to play with and spending a lot of time lolling around in his bed looking thoroughly depressed. Of course he may not be all that impressed with a pint-sized interloper either, but I'm sure it would be better for him in the long run than being an only dog.

TheCunnyFunt · 24/05/2013 13:13

Not sure what happened there Confused I'll start again!

YourHand I hope shydog is better, poor thing. Must be awful to be feeling so poorly. Sprocket is weird about the weather, he tiptoes around the back garden in the driest spots possible, but he'll quite cheerfully go out for a walk in the rain! Confused

Lock I liked the pic, those ears! I don't think I'll ever get over how amazing they are :o

cinnamongreyhound · 24/05/2013 20:19

Hi all, just looking around for any threads on poorly doggies and came across you. I have a lovely fawn greyhound called Nelly who is 12 1/2, she's an ex-racer and she's been with me nearly 9 years.

She was very odd this morning while out on her walk and she's gone down hill all day. She has had a salivary gland growth for 7 years but vet said its benign and it hasn't caused her any problems so we've left it. When I touched it earlier she tried to bite me. Took her to the vet and she has temp of 40.5 and the pouch under her chin is fluid filled. Vet isn't sure what's causing it as the fluid could be saliva because she producing lots to cool down or could be causing the high temp. She said it could also be a virus or some other bug. She's got anti inflammatories and antibiotics and we've got a fan on her. She's looking very sorry for herself and I'm really hoping I don't have to make a horrible decision tomorrow :(

moosemama · 24/05/2013 21:22

Hi cinnamongreyhound, I'm so sorry to hear about your poorly girl.

Hopefully the antibiotics and anti-inflammatories will do their work overnight and she will be much better by morning.

Not sure if it's the same thing, but my Mum actually has a problem with repeated blockage of her salivary gland and apparently it's blooming painful. She's needed antibiotics a couple of times to sort it out and I think she also has anti-inflammatories to reduce the swelling.

I wonder if the fluid filled pouch could be an abcess of some kind? If it is the anti-bs and anti-inflammatories should really help, in fact if it's anything other than a virus the anti-bs should help.

I'll keep everything crossed for you overnight and check back to see how she is in the morning.

TheCunnyFunt · 24/05/2013 21:36

Hi Cinnamon, I'm afraid I don't know much about your girls problem, I wish you and her all the best, keeping fingers and paws crossed here that it's nothing serious and that Nelly (fab name btw!) is back to normal soon. I hope you'll keep us updated.

Feel free to hang around on the cushion, it's always lovely to have new members :) we're a friendly pack Wink :o

cinnamongreyhound · 24/05/2013 22:28

I'd love to hang around, her racing name was Nells Turn so they rescue home renamed her Nelly. I will post tomorrow morning once we've been to the vets.

mistlethrush · 24/05/2013 22:41

I hope you have some good news tomorrow Cinnamon.

Mistlehound absent mindedly groomed me earlier this evening. Just for a very short time - but a definite groom...

She keeps on eating the peat-free compost in the tubs I've just planted up - any idea why?

MagratGarlik · 24/05/2013 23:52

Jessie eats the compost in our garden tubs too. She loves dead leaves as well. I always thought it was because she was found as a stray and therefore has some odd ideas as to what food is.

She grooms her people too (and once groomed, you stay groomed).

I hope your grey is OK, cinammon.

cinnamongreyhound · 25/05/2013 01:09

I have just got back from saying goodbye to my wonderful doggie. She was couldn't get up to go to bed so we decided not to wait until morning. Thank you for your kind words and give your doggies an extra hug from me.

TheCunnyFunt · 25/05/2013 08:16

Oh cinnamon, I'm so so sorry, you must be heart broken. Have a ((hug)) from me.

Run free Nelly x

YourHandInMyHand · 25/05/2013 08:32

Oh cinnamon so sorry to hear about Nelly. Sad

MagratGarlik · 25/05/2013 10:17

So sorry, Cinnamon. It sounds like you gave her a good life.

MagratGarlik · 25/05/2013 19:58

Met a lovely Irish wolf hound today. So massive, but just beautiful. They are now next on my wish-list Smile.

moosemama · 26/05/2013 10:57

Oh Cinnamon, I am so sorry. You did the right thing for her when it mattered most and she's at peace now - no more pain. I lost my old girl almost a month ago, it's heartbreaking. Sad ((hugs))

I am so cross that I didn't get a chance to log on to the net yesterday. Sad

cinnamongreyhound · 26/05/2013 11:31

Thank you moosemama! It was just so quick, she went from her usual happy self Thursday to a bit slow on our walk Friday am to not being at to get up at 11 Friday night. I'm glad we were able to help her but can't get over the guilt of letting her get so bad. It was less then 5 hours since we saw the vet and she was walking around then. She was a total couch potato so her laying down not moving a lot was pretty normal anyway.

My boys want to go and look at new dogs tomorrow! Dh agrees with them and I just don't know. I know what he means about filling the hole and giving another greyhound a home and improving their life but it just seems so soon. No dog with ever replace Nelly and it won't stop me hurting so much but I feel I've taken it much harder than everyone else. Having said that the three of them really want to have a look and only I am not sure so perhaps I should.

So sorry to have found your thread and come along and made it all miserable! I could share some lovely stories of my Nelly dog. She was never one for laps or sofas but if you stop stroking her you'd get a wallop to remind ou she was there! She love food of any kind! Much less playful in her old age but I still have the first cuddly toy I bought her in November 2004 when I got her, she was so gentle. She joined me when I started running early last year and gave up summer last year when I started going beyond 5k and she hated every moment. Dh once left the hate open and spent 2 1/2 hours in the forest trying to catch her, never out of his sight so she knew she was safe but not quite close enough, great game. She also ate my birthday cake a few years ago, an entire fruit cake!!! She never spotted a deer, squirrel, bird until it was right under her nose and then she'd go absolutely mad! She also loved sunning her self out in the garden and that's what she did when we got home from the vets Friday.

cinnamongreyhound · 26/05/2013 11:44

I have also liked you pic BehindLockNumberNine do you I know you from elsewhere on mn? Thinking mfp thread?

moosemama · 26/05/2013 14:00

Be kind to yourself cinnamon. There's always guilt, no matter how caring an owner you are. Sometimes they do just do downhill so fast, you couldn't have known. You did your best for her and your love for her comes through so clearly in your posts.

As you say, no dog will ever replace your girl and people are very different in how they handle things. For some, a new dog is a distraction and helps them cope with the grief that way, for others they need to do their grieving before they can contemplate sharing their life with another canine companion. It's difficult when you have both factions under one roof.

We are waiting until dd starts school full-time in September, but it's hard sticking to it, because our other dog is lost without oldgirl.

Don't you worry at all about sharing on the thread. I'm new here too, but I'm sure the others would agree that we are all here to support each other through everything that living with a pointy dog throws at us - good and bad.

Do keep sharing your lovely memories, if it helps. I know it helps me to keep talking about oldgirl and remembering some of her more colourful antics.
