Pointy hounds include-
Greyhounds (Grunds)
Whippets (Whippys)
Lurchers
Italian Greyhounds (Iggys)
Salukis
Afghans
And any others I have forgotten. If you are a new pointy hound owner, an old and experienced owner or looking into getting one of these fabulous creatures, come and have a seat (that's not taken up with a hound).

I didn?t really want you,
I wasn?t really sure,
And I?ll admit I had my doubts,
When you first came through that door.

Not small, or cute, or fluffy,
With big, soft puppy eyes,
But tall, and thin, and bony,
With bald, pink, bulging thighs.

You weren?t the kind I had in mind,
Not in any way,
?Perhaps it would be better if I took you back today,
Before we know each other,
It really won?t be kind,
To keep you here for one more day,
And then to change my mind.?

But against my better judgement, I decided you could stay,
And quickly I discovered you were kind in every way,
Your gentleness and patience, they really stole the show,
?Why these dogs are wonderful, I must let others know!?

For you?re my gentle giant,
Who just needed the chance,
To show us all what you could be,
To wipe away that history,
And dispel our preconceptions, which put us all to shame,
And so we come to know and love,
What lies beneath that frame.

And now I?ve come to understand,
What I missed right at the start,
That greyhounds need that great deep chest,
To house their great big hearts!

I posted a few days ago about my new rough coated lurcher which we picked up from the rspca last Saturday. We had a couple of Poo incidents but I think that was initial settling in. A few wet patches but I'm sure we will sort that out as well.

But what I want to shout about today is that I took the plunge on a massive walk today and let Trevor off the lead. With heart in mouth I watched him run as only a lurcher can. His recall was amazing. Straight back after a shout or pathetic whistle!

I am so giddy, can't you tell.

MrSlant · 20/04/2013 17:03

The sight of a pointy running (and coming back!) makes me grin and grin however I've been feeling before. They are like nature's Prozac Smile.

YourHandInMyHand · 20/04/2013 19:14

I haven't let my new addition off lead in a walk yet as she's still very jumpy - and now she's restricted to the garden for time being as it seems she's in season! I thought she'd been done!!

parno that's great your lurcher is settling in and has good recall. Smile

parno · 20/04/2013 19:22

I think I may have just worked out how to display some pics of 'r Trev. I think he comes back as he is totally besotted with me and my bag of cocktail sausages. Though I must admit I am also in love with him. Have been banned from getting him a bandana though I think he would look super in one.

MrSlant · 20/04/2013 19:46

parno he's beautiful! Looks pretty devoted to that lovely little girl too. Smile

MagratGarlik · 20/04/2013 19:52

What a lovely dog, parno. Lots of collie mixed in too.

We took ours for a pub lunch today, where they were dutifully admired by misty-eyed old men and young boys. They are now enjoying their dinner of pilchards.

parno · 20/04/2013 19:56

Collie? Do you think? I have been trying to work out his heritage. Thank you for your compliments, he is ace. Currently collapsed after his excitement today.

MagratGarlik · 20/04/2013 21:01

I thought so (could be wrong though), but the markings are a collie-ish.

YourHandInMyHand · 20/04/2013 21:16

Aaw he is lovely. How nice to see him settling in. :-)

mistlethrush · 20/04/2013 22:20

Perhaps even rough collie? Very lovely looking. I do like a scruffie.

I love the sound of galloping feet catching up after a whistle...

Bandana I think it probably only needs to be on specific occasions rather than all the time...

LadyTurmoil · 22/04/2013 17:49

Don't look at this if you love a scruffie mistlethrush and others Smile

TheCunnyFunt · 22/04/2013 19:28

Aww Trevor is gorgeous! Such a handsome boy and beautiful colouring too :) I think he looks like he has Collie in him as well.

Squee! Betsey how exciting!! You must all be very excited! Do you know how they're getting on then? No advice wrt bathing I'm afraid. Maybe Febreeze? :o

Well I'm back home now, got back this time yesterday and Sprocket came home at lunchtime today, he's now sporting the most amazing gift from his brother Andy, a Milgi bandana in the Yellow Magic Circles fabric. I must say it looks fantastic against his glossy black fur. I had a great weekend, Scuttle and her DH were very lovely and welcoming, and her DH is a marvellous cook. I could happily eat at their house every day :o
I rather miss Mick though, the lovely cuddle sponge :)

MagratGarlik · 22/04/2013 21:20

Doesn't Poppy the saluki x look gorgeous?

Glad to hear you had a good time, Cunny. Sprocket's bandana looks fab.

VivaLeBeaver · 22/04/2013 21:28

Can I please ask some whippet advice on here?

Are whippets prone to dental problems like greyhounds are?

If we got a whippet puppy is it likely to get on ok with the cats as it would be used to them from a young age?

TheCunnyFunt · 22/04/2013 21:49

I believe Greyhound dental problems are because when they're still racers, they're fed high protein, hydrating slop with not much hard stuff to have a good chew on. Also they wear muzzles so much which doesn't help. So a Whippet shouldn't have the same problems if they're given plenty of hard things to chew, like raw bones, nylabones etc.

Getting a puppy doesn't necessarily mean it will be good with cats just because it grew up with them. It may be safer for the cat(s?) to go for an adult Whippet who's passed a cat test.

TheCunnyFunt · 22/04/2013 21:51

Personally Magrat I think Poppy the toddler is a lot more gorgeous than Poppy the Saluki x Wink

MagratGarlik · 22/04/2013 22:00

Cunny, of course, Poppy the toddler is a cutie too - that goes without saying!

Viva, I'd agree with Cunny, an adult whippet would probably be better as i believe prey-drive is inherent rather than learned iyswim. A puppy may start off ok with cats, then turn on them when it hits puberty and prey drive kicks in.

VivaLeBeaver · 22/04/2013 22:04

That's interesting, I'd assumed the opposite and that if they grew up together they'd be ok but it makes sense that prey drive could kick in as they get older. Hmmm.

mistlethrush · 23/04/2013 09:31

Viva - I have pmd you due to your other thread. The rescue I got ours from (and several of their fosterers) have 'stunt' cats that are used to dogs and new dogs are tested for their cat-safeness with them... There's also lots of advice on introducing new dogs to existing cats and how to make sure that things go as well as they can do.

TheCunnyFunt · 23/04/2013 09:36

Oh Viva I just saw your other thread, I'm so sorry. It must've been an awful shock to you all.

MissBetseyTrotwood · 23/04/2013 20:31

OK. So they're (both!) home.

Billy is fine. A little smelly, but absolutely lovely. Everything healed up well and very happy to be home. Blissing out on his sheepskin after a dinner of liver as we speak.

Roxy is also gorgeous. She's curious, affectionate, playful and just amazing with the DSs. In fact, she seems to have settled in almost immediately! But... she seems to feel so at home that she's been very aggressive towards poor Billy. We've had two snaps and one snarl/growl already. It turns out she nipped his ear when they were kennelled together and she's already had a go at his nose since we've been home. She already seems to have learnt the house rules of no paws on worktops or the table and waiting nicely for food though. She just doesn't want to share...

We've done everything they advised us to: walk them straight out of the car, put them out in the garden straight away, not feed together, separate beds etc. But we've muzzled her now as every time she sees him she seems to start an altercation.

The kennel owner has been brilliant. She agrees Billy has to be 'top dog' in the relationship and she has to learn her place by having food, lead, going out the door etc second to him. She's reminded me Roxy's only on trial and that she's got no worries about having her back if things don't settle down! I desperately don't want her to be a return though.

Feel as though we've bitten off more than we can chew with her. (No pun intended...)

mistlethrush · 23/04/2013 22:47

New cat friendly Grew on LL that needs a home away from sheep.

Betsy - I hope things settle down - but as you say, this is a trial...

When we got our 2nd dog with our collie x, it was complete hell for at least 3 days - until colliex discovered that you could actually play with puppies - that was the start of the bond developing between the two of them.

MrSlant · 23/04/2013 22:55

Saw the Gray on LL, fell in love, realised that I live in rural Wales and it is wall to wall sheep!

Fingers crossed Betsey.

MagratGarlik · 23/04/2013 23:30

Sure it will settle, Betsey. I think a few misunderstandings are normal early on. From what I understand, girls often tend to be boss though. We did find it strange and crowded when Jessie came home though, but couldn't be without either now.

Scuttlebutter · 24/04/2013 00:30

Marvellous news, Betsey, and so glad to hear that Billy is now healing well. My only concern is that like others, I'd say it's completely normal for the bitch to be top dog - this has always been the case with us, both with our dear old Bootie, and now with the two girls we've got in, and is the norm with all the friends/volunteers I know. All the boys are very happy to defer to the girls and this is absolutely standard with mixed sex pairings.

I'm a bit worried by all the "rank reduction" advice you're being given too - hope you are not being advised to be the pack leader. Sad If things are so bad she is continually biting Billy and needing to be muzzled all the time, I'd be rethinking it urgently. A few "handbags at dawn" moments are natural in the first few days but this sounds a little more serious? If they don't get on, it is NOT a reflection on either you or Billy, just something that sometimes happens. We once had a foster like that - WW3 - after less than 48 hrs she was back in kennel and much happier - I'd been feeling like the UN peacekeeping force.

Sending you all lots of peaceful vibes Smile
