Pointy hounds include-
Greyhounds (Grunds)
Whippets (Whippys)
Lurchers
Italian Greyhounds (Iggys)
Salukis
Afghans
And any others I have forgotten. If you are a new pointy hound owner, an old and experienced owner or looking into getting one of these fabulous creatures, come and have a seat (that's not taken up with a hound).

I didn?t really want you,
I wasn?t really sure,
And I?ll admit I had my doubts,
When you first came through that door.

Not small, or cute, or fluffy,
With big, soft puppy eyes,
But tall, and thin, and bony,
With bald, pink, bulging thighs.

You weren?t the kind I had in mind,
Not in any way,
?Perhaps it would be better if I took you back today,
Before we know each other,
It really won?t be kind,
To keep you here for one more day,
And then to change my mind.?

But against my better judgement, I decided you could stay,
And quickly I discovered you were kind in every way,
Your gentleness and patience, they really stole the show,
?Why these dogs are wonderful, I must let others know!?

For you?re my gentle giant,
Who just needed the chance,
To show us all what you could be,
To wipe away that history,
And dispel our preconceptions, which put us all to shame,
And so we come to know and love,
What lies beneath that frame.

And now I?ve come to understand,
What I missed right at the start,
That greyhounds need that great deep chest,
To house their great big hearts!

Ooh gorgeous collar Betsey! Loving that it matches Billy's :o

Hi Lakers! Welcome to the cushion :) how long have you had your Grunds?

parno · 14/04/2013 10:06

Hello all. New to this thread as we picked up our 4yr old (approx) rough coated lurcher from the RSPCA yesterday. Seemed quite settled last night - no whining, barking when we went to bed but I awoke this morning to 3 piles of poo in the room where he was supposed to be sleeping. I have decided not to crate him as the crate would be massive and we don't really have the space.

I know it's really early days but should I close the door of the room that he is supposed to be sleeping in rather than letting him have the run of the house downstairs at night?

I fed him at half 4 and let him out a couple of times (just a wee and lots of praise) before we went to bed at 12.

He has a lovely nature and we are just getting to know each other. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I suspect I will be on here quite a lot!

MagratGarlik · 14/04/2013 11:30

Welcome, parno.

No advise on house training, I'm afraid. Our lurcher won't wee in the garden because she seems to think that's only for whippy. She occasionally wee's by the front door instead...

Aside from taking her out more regularly we haven't really found a solution.

I love the look of the wire-haired lurchers though.

MrSlant · 14/04/2013 11:31

Welcome to the cushion parno Smile

I would say if you see him sniffing around or starting to squat get him outside ASAP and give him lots of opportunities to get it right and massively praise him when he does. Don't make a fuss of the mistakes as he won't have a clue in the morning if you are cross about something he did in the night! I would recommend a crate though, even if you borrow one for a short time, they don't seem to like messing up their 'space' so will make an effort to hold on, if no crate then at least keep him to one room for now. It shouldn't take long to sort out though, just stick to one way of doing things and he will get there quickly. Congratulations on your lovely new dog, I love a scruffy lurcher, any chance of a picture?

parno · 14/04/2013 12:06

Need some techno help. I have put some photo's in my MN gallery but not sure how you get to them.

MrSlant · 14/04/2013 12:11

Umm, I think you have to go to privacy settings? Not sure as I don't have a profile. I'll go and have a look.

MrSlant · 14/04/2013 12:13

If you go to mumsnet on the blue bar there is a purple dropdown for privacy settings and after you put your password in again if you scroll to the bottom of that page you can change your privacy to let people see. Is that what you are looking for?

TheCunnyFunt · 14/04/2013 21:05

Welcome Parno :) awww I love scruffy lurchers! Have no advice on toilet training I'm afraid, my Sprocket was already housetrained when we got him.

mistlethrush · 15/04/2013 08:32

Parno - we managed to housetrain our 2 yo (ish) scruffy lurcher last autumn... not an ideal time as fireworks were going off outside that really didn't make excursions outside easy!

Ours thought 'inside' was where you did things - rather than just doing things inside or outside, so the first afternoon we brought her home she managed to hold on (to everything) for 4.5 hrs, being taken out round the block and in the garden every 30mins, then did everything on the hall mat. We ended up with her in our room as she didn't settle anywhere else, and I woke up every time she got up and if she went out of the room I took her out. We had a lunge rein that I used in the garden so that a) I could keep an eye on what she was doing and b) she didn't simply go off on a good sniff and hunt in the garden. Every time we went out I encouraged her, using specific phrases, and praised when that happened outside. When inside you have to watch like a hawk - ours would go out of the sitting room and aim for a patch in the hall and if you caught her before the 1st circle was padded, you could get her out without an accident. Now, as long as you know the signs, you can tell when she needs to go out - she walks to the back door and back, and perks up when you ask her if she wants to go down the garden.

He might, of course, be just used to being in a kennel, and once he remembers what it is like to be in a house, sort himself out (our last dog was like that) but if he's never been in a house you'll be more likely to have similar problems to ours.

Racing on Sat was really fun - lovely sunny weather helped tremendously. Lots of lovely pointy hounds and a few others, lots of friendly (non-celeb) pointy owners. Mistlehound ran in a 425m for the first time and managed to get into the final (although she was last in that). It is very funny though - there were some dogs that were 1/2" taller than her - so in the 'over 23"' races, which she was a good 8" longer than!!! Grin

MrSlant · 15/04/2013 11:07

Mistle that sounds ace, she really is a 'long dog' isn't she Grin

I'm babysitting my boy's brother this week so we have just had a fabulous long run on the beach. I've trained them really hard over the weekend on recall so when I am on my own (like today for the first time) I can feel confident. Well they ran and ran together, people were stopping to watch them as they looked so beautiful in the sunshine and every time I called them they came and sat at my feet ready for a treat. I got told they had excellent recall by a man with two huskies Grin (the huskies were SO well behaved, they howled like wolves and then rolled over for a tummy rub!) Lovely morning.

mistlethrush · 15/04/2013 11:41

Gosh that is good recall... Mistlehound's can still be a little flakey at times, but its improving - as long as she's just pottering its no problem at all, its if she sees a potential playmate, particularly if they're playing with a ball, that the trouble comes.

Yes, she is VERY long. Then of course she has the normal lurcher length tail at the back too.... I'll try to put a tape from shoulder to top of tail later.

CMOTDibbler · 15/04/2013 12:17

Wow on recall! Mine is doing really well to the whistle now, but if he's actively playing its not so easy.

I've added a picture of cmotdog to my profile - cunny, you will note that pics of dpony are immediatly after he has been washed. He is a disgusting mud monster atm

MrSlant · 15/04/2013 13:39

My boy and his brother, not from today but I love this photo of them.

Mistle, you'll need a proper builders tape measure to get her all on Grin

Saying their recall was good today though, the brother is a notorious escape artist and we have had to practically razor wire our garden for this week. I just spent a frantic 5 minutes calling him in the garden panicking before I realised he hadn't gone out with the other two and was standing behind me in the kitchen Blush.

MrSlant · 15/04/2013 13:44

My pack for the week. The small one is actually a baby Ewok Wink

CMOTDibbler · 15/04/2013 14:11

That picture on the beach is amazing MrSlant, and I love the ears in the second pic

TheCunnyFunt · 15/04/2013 18:39

I had to Google Ewonk Blush

MagratGarlik · 15/04/2013 18:42

That shows how young you are Cunny!

TheCunnyFunt · 15/04/2013 18:48

Stupid phone.

I had to Google Ewok Blush I love the beach photo, amazing. They look like they're having such a good time! Very impressed at the recall!

The racing sounds great Mistle, you're really lucky to be able to do that! :o at mistlehound being longer than everyone else :o

CMOT :o at disgusting mud monster, can hardly blame him considering the lovely Hmm weather we've been having!

TheCunnyFunt · 15/04/2013 18:49

I'm 22 in two months Wink

MagratGarlik · 15/04/2013 19:20

I'm old enough to legally be your mum!

MissBetseyTrotwood · 15/04/2013 19:39

Love those pics Mr Slant.

Perhaps not quite legally but definitely biologically old enough here to be your mum Cunny!

TheCunnyFunt · 15/04/2013 20:22

Found out the other week I'm one of the youngest people LGT has rehomed to!

MrSlant · 15/04/2013 20:44

Sorry! No Ewok is not a breed of dog Blush. Oh dear, I was 17 when you were born, I can't believe people who weren't born when Star Wars came out are old enough to have children and dogs and stuff.

CMOT gorgeous dog and gorgeous pony, I am a bit Shock at the thought of having such a beautiful grey in this muddy weather, that must be a nightmare.

CMOTDibbler · 15/04/2013 20:55

TBH, the mud scrapes off, and we just don't talk about his mane. But its not like we show or go to pony club (am still terrified of pony club mums), so it doesn't matter really. But I love it when he's all clean and shiny - but as he lives out, it doesn't last long as he loves to roll.

I'd have been 18 when Cunny was born!

MagratGarlik · 15/04/2013 21:51

Me too CMOT, just. I'm 40 next month.

(Still wondering when I'm going to start feeling like a grown up though).
