Pointy hounds include-
Greyhounds (Grunds)
Whippets (Whippys)
Lurchers
Italian Greyhounds (Iggys)
Salukis
Afghans
And any others I have forgotten. If you are a new pointy hound owner, an old and experienced owner or looking into getting one of these fabulous creatures, come and have a seat (that's not taken up with a hound).

Jake
I didn?t really want you,
I wasn?t really sure,
And I?ll admit I had my doubts,
When you first came through that door.

Not small, or cute, or fluffy,
With big, soft puppy eyes,
But tall, and thin, and bony,
With bald, pink, bulging thighs.

You weren?t the kind I had in mind,
Not in any way,
?Perhaps it would be better if I took you back today,
Before we know each other,
It really won?t be kind,
To keep you here for one more day,
And then to change my mind.?

But against my better judgement, I decided you could stay,
And quickly I discovered you were kind in every way,
Your gentleness and patience, they really stole the show,
?Why these dogs are wonderful, I must let others know!?

For you?re my gentle giant,
Who just needed the chance,
To show us all what you could be,
To wipe away that history,
And dispel our preconceptions, which put us all to shame,
And so we come to know and love,
What lies beneath that frame.

And now I?ve come to understand,
What I missed right at the start,
That greyhounds need that great deep chest,
To house their great big hearts!

Yy to stair gates. We still use ours even though our ds's are now 5 and 8. It gives the possibility to separate dogs and children when we can't physically watch them. It also helps when the boys have friends coming over to play as we can confine the dogs to one area. We have another stair gate to our utility room to shut the dogs away when answering the front door (the dogs don't like the door closed on them).

Woody (our whippet) has a red blizzard coat. He likes it and it seems warm.

Also don't worry about crating seeming cruel - it's not. Must greys are used to being crated and it was a godsend when we got our whippet as he suffered such bad separation anxiety at first it was the only way we could leave him without the house being destroyed. Both ours love their crates and it gives clear no go areas for the dc's too.

MrSlant · 01/04/2013 23:12

I second stair gates, did feel a bit odd getting them out again but it makes leaving him home alone that much easier. YY to crate training too, we are staying in a hotel right now visiting DH's brother in hospital, this is our 6th week in a row and we have exhausted all our friends with dog sitting so the fact that he is crated at night and when we leave the room means we can bring him with us.

I wish I could work the link to whippety boy in his newest Milgi coat, he looks fabulous but it is on their FB page and I can't work out how to do that right now. She is a regular on this thread but I wouldn't have gone back for another coat if they weren't fabulous.

TheCunnyFuntIsAGrittersFiancee · 01/04/2013 23:20

Would you like me to link MrS? I'm on fb now, it'd only take a minute.

Scuttlebutter · 01/04/2013 23:24

It's really lovely to hear so many positives about Milgi Coats [bublush] - this is where I stand up and say I am Spartacus!

The Blizzard coats are nice (we have several) but for outdoor waterproof/weatherproof my own preference is for the Outhwaites ones. We have one of theirs for our biggest male - they are super warm, v hard wearing, and the Ming the Merciless collar is fab on wet, cold days. A bit more expensive but superb quality. They also do PINK ones [bushock] which I am eyeing up for the Norty Minx. YOu can get them on Amazon, and various websites. And no, I have no connection to them and as they are outdoor coats, no business interest in them, so can be completely neutral.

TheCunnyFuntIsAGrittersFiancee · 01/04/2013 23:35

We should get comission for all the good words we spread about Milgi Coats [buwink]

MrSlant · 01/04/2013 23:49

Cunny if you can link to the gorgeous photo of whippety boy please do, not that I ever try to show off my beautiful boy at all. Oh no Wink.

Scuttle, or Spartacus Wink you should be proud of all your return customers, you are doing a great job.

TheCunnyFuntIsAGrittersFiancee · 01/04/2013 23:53

MrS' Whippety boy. He's just gorgeous, no-one can resist showing him off!

MagratGarlik · 01/04/2013 23:55

He's almost as gorgeous as my whippetty boy, MrS.

I agree though, Scuttle, you are doing a fab job.

YourHandInMyHand · 02/04/2013 09:05

TBH it was also the idea of having a big crate somewhere in the house that put me off too! There is room in several places around the house for a dog bed but a crate could really only go in one place as they are so visually in your face. I am a bit soft about the idea of a crate but I don't think they are cruel, I know several families who use them and dog and owner are happy with them.
Dog is in kennels at the moment though so maybe a crate would be less of a huge adjustment? I will ask lovely rescue lady see what she advises.

Have been reassured they have a coat until I get one too so that's a relief, it's so cold at the moment I didn't want her shivering on walks.

Scuttle your coats are lovely, I shall definitely be a future customer! Smile

Can't get doggy picture link to work.

BehindLockNumberNine · 02/04/2013 09:39

Our not-a-real-whippety had to be crate trained as he suffered from separation anxiety and would howl and destroy the house when left home alone for the few hours I have to go to work.

The lovely lady at the rescue kennels we got him from recommended crate training after we had struggled and tried everything for six months and had a destroyed bedroom and living room to show for it and by jove it was a miracle.

Yes it is a large, unsightly crate. But an anxious wreck of a dog and a destroyed house (he chewed belongings, furniture, window blinds and skirting boards) was unslightly and unpleasant too.

He loves his crate. He goes in there voluntarily if we have guests (he is still a bit nervy with too much noise and with new faces) adn when he sees us putting our shoes on in the morning to get ready to go to school he grabs his cuddely pigeon toy and trots off into his crate.

Scuttle - you use other people's coats Shock Wink

YourHandInMyHand · 02/04/2013 10:05

"he grabs his cuddely pigeon toy and trots off into his crate" aaaw he sounds adorable! It sounds like he really benefitted from it too. The only space for one is in my room where it wouldn't be in the way, will definitely look into crate training. Smile

MagratGarlik · 02/04/2013 10:05

Funny that your Sam has a cuddly pigeon, Behind.

Woody had a cuddly spider and a cuddly dog. Never punctures them just carries them round and plays with them. My previous dog (a collie x) would have destroyed all soft toys.

BehindLockNumberNine · 02/04/2013 10:13

Sam has Wilbur the cuddely wood pigeon, Molly the cuddely cow and Frank the cuddely monkey.
He carries them around the house, there is always at least one in the same room he is in.
He takes Wilbur into his crate with him, dd ensures Frank and Molly are in there too, and when I come home from work Sam will spend a crazy few minutes running up and down the stairs transferring Frank, Molly and Wilbur from crate to my bed!
When we go on a walk he will often insist on carrying one of his cuddelies. We get quite a few smiles when he does this... [busmile]

As for the crate, we are lucky, it just fitted under the stairs in our hallway so whilst visible it is not so 'in your face'. And yes, Sam loves it, we are very luck we found a solution to his anxiety. [busmile]

MrSlant · 02/04/2013 11:43

I do love that photo, thanks for linking Cunny. We are going for a play with a couple of greys tomorrow and he will definitely be wearing it, although I think they will be similarly attired! Wink Very excited to be having some greyhound leans though.

Whippety boy loves his crate, having three rather 'spirited' boys in the house I impressed upon them that if he went in there that was his space and he was to be left alone so I is his refuge. That said he is much happier lying across a boy if he can only get then to keep still and he doesn't sleep in DS2's bed at all, oh no

He's also a collector of stuffed toys, his crate is littered with them and he naps cuddling a small Easter duck!

mistlethrush · 02/04/2013 11:57

We got a 'pet gate' from Argos when we were having potential SA issues with mistlehound - but even though its taller than a normal stairgate, she just goes straight over the top with ease. However, it is good at keeping her in or out of the kitchen if you are around (eg if she's eating something that needs to be eaten in the kitchen rather than taken into the hall (eg chicken wing).

For her we managed to stop the SA getting ingrained, and now she's pretty laid back about being left - she doesn't want to but you get back and she's been asleep on the sofa - clearly she now realises that we're coming back and that she's safe at home....

We got her a fitted, fleece lined waterproof coat from one of the LL people that makes them to measure - its been very practical over the winter and hasn't needed washing, although it gets rather wet on the sides when she lies down in the snow. We also got a martingale collar through them too - look on the lurcherlink on-line shop links.

We had a lovely run with her yesterday - to a large nearby park and she managed to have a good run with another pointy, and generally a lovely run around just because the sun was shining and she was in a big open area.... and then a spronk into an extremely muddy puddle just as we were getting close to the car.... [buhmm]

MagratGarlik · 02/04/2013 12:07

Ours could in theory both jump the stair gates. They don't though because they are too thick

They just stand and look pitifully at the gate, even when it's not clipped shut.

mistlethrush · 02/04/2013 12:15

Ours definitely goes over the top, despite lack of grey matter. Mind you, she is now starting to leap around a lot when on walks - we go to a park that has flower beds, some raised up on walls, and one in particular has a box hedge along the front edge as well as a 4' wall up to the box - she casually bounced up there the other day with hardly any effort - and all the fences that our last dog looked at as completely impassable barriers are an easy skip....

TheCunnyFuntIsAGrittersFiancee · 02/04/2013 20:22

We just have ordinary Lindam baby gates, Sprocket could probably get over but he's too lazy. Although tbf from inside the kitchen he wouldn't be able to get a good run up and from the other side he'd jump over and probably smack into the cupboards. The top of the gate is the same height as his back [bushock]

No problem MrS, he is a gorgeous boy, he looks so noble in that pic! Have a nice time tomorrow [busmile]

Yy Magrat, Sprocket does that too, just stands and stares at you over the top of it with really sad eyes, even if the gate is open with a 6" gap [buhmm]

mistlethrush · 03/04/2013 09:14

Mistlehound doesn't need a run up. She can make it onto the kitchen table in a little pop up if she wants to - like stepping up a step for us Hmm

I'm going to have to take her to the vets - she's got conjunctivitis and probably should see the vet at least this time... if its regular perhaps they'll let me get away with just the eye drops?

Scuttlebutter · 03/04/2013 14:43

Oh dear Mistle - yes, def the vet. I never take any chances with eyes.

We had a lovely morning today - met up with Mr Slant and her glorious, adorable bundle of whippet gorgeousness (who was wearing a very smart coat [buwink]). Took the Norty Minx and our lovely Callie and we had a nice walk with some off lead play by the river and then a gentle stroll round the Bay. Amazed at how much attention the dogs attracted, with a queue forming at one point of people wanting to come and make a fuss. Also met another very nice whippy. What a lovely morning. [busmile]

Also, Mr Slant's DC (and DH) are very nice.

mistlethrush · 03/04/2013 14:47

I think that you'll find MrSlant quite understands the envious looks at the dog, but if you continue to eye up her DH like that there'll be trouble Scuttle!

Vets booked tonight. Then have to sort the spare room out in case MiL is discharged from hospital where they've still not diagnosed what sort of cancer she's got. Confused

TheCunnyFuntIsAGrittersFiancee · 03/04/2013 16:01

Poor MistleHound, conjunctivitis is horrible. Shock at her jumping! Does she have springs in her legs??
Terribly sorry to hear about your MIL :(

Sounds like you had a great time this morning Scuttle, :o at the queue of people wanting to fuss the dogs, bet they felt like celebrities!

mistlethrush · 03/04/2013 16:31

Cunny - yes, she does have springs in her legs. In fact, even quite a lot of the LL lot look Shock and Hmm at her when they see her bouncing to see over things - because, without making any preparatory spring, she can easily get her head up at the same level as mine (and I'm 5'8") with her back legs not hanging down a lot lower than her front legs. Its one of the things that makes us think that she was in a barn or a shed and probably bounced to try to see out Sad although now she does it for fun things and doesn't do it out of the garden Grin. In fact, having steeled ourselves to possibly have an escapologist on our hands, she is definitely a home-lover that has absolutely no intention of going anywhere.

Scuttlebutter · 03/04/2013 19:07

Mistle, she sounds amazing. Smile Really sorry to hear about your MIL - hoping she can have TLC at home with you.

Yes, Cunny, we had a great time this morning - the girls were so good, and they lapped up the attention. It was lovely to see Mr Slant's whippy and Callie doing zoomies together and playing by the river - Callie went ot say hello to some canoeists who looked a bit surprised when a greyhound suddenly appeared next to them! Norty Minx stayed on lead - her recall is improving but is not yet rock solid. Girls are now having a very relaxing snooze.

MrSlant · 03/04/2013 19:50

Well that was a fabulous morning. I don't think Scuttle was eyeing up DH he is full if cold and looks rather pink of eye Smile. I am now totally convinced that we will have a Very Tall Whippet one day as the girls were utterly charming. One lady was making such a fuss of Callie she barely said hello to her friend and they hasn't seen each other for years Grin. I think I converted her son to Whippets though as he thought Silver was a puppy greyhound but when I explained he was a grown up smaller version he was entranced! It was lovely to see the dogs have a lovely time as well, he really needed a run and looked so happy with his new friends, thank you Scuttle (and I am now the proud owner of a new mad fabric bandana, there will be photo's!)
