Pointy hounds include-
Greyhounds (Grunds)
Whippets (Whippys)
Lurchers
Italian Greyhounds (Iggys)
Salukis
Afghans
And any others I have forgotten. If you are a new pointy hound owner, an old and experienced owner or looking into getting one of these fabulous creatures, come and have a seat (that's not taken up with a hound).

I didn?t really want you,
I wasn?t really sure,
And I?ll admit I had my doubts,
When you first came through that door.

Not small, or cute, or fluffy,
With big, soft puppy eyes,
But tall, and thin, and bony,
With bald, pink, bulging thighs.

You weren?t the kind I had in mind,
Not in any way,
?Perhaps it would be better if I took you back today,
Before we know each other,
It really won?t be kind,
To keep you here for one more day,
And then to change my mind.?

But against my better judgement, I decided you could stay,
And quickly I discovered you were kind in every way,
Your gentleness and patience, they really stole the show,
?Why these dogs are wonderful, I must let others know!?

For you?re my gentle giant,
Who just needed the chance,
To show us all what you could be,
To wipe away that history,
And dispel our preconceptions, which put us all to shame,
And so we come to know and love,
What lies beneath that frame.

And now I?ve come to understand,
What I missed right at the start,
That greyhounds need that great deep chest,
To house their great big hearts!

The ECMO beds cost 6k a day to run, per bed. David was on it for almost 4 weeks! I estimate his ECMO alone to be 162k, I don't know what ICU beds cost with ventilator etc, and he had god knows how many drips, at one point he was hooked up to about 10 bags! He had about a month on ICU altogether, then about 3 weeks on a normal ward. He's gone through countless bags of stuff too. All in all that was one very expensive hospital stay!

I don't care how many people bitch about how crap the NHS is, they've done so much for my brother since he was a baby (born with a hole in his heart, had countless heart operations).

MrSlant · 30/03/2013 22:06

ECMO rocks though! Thank goodness we live in the UK. I think Bil's bed is probably more than £500 as he's in neuro HDU but I know that's the standard for a surgical bed. If only people knew.

MagratGarlik · 30/03/2013 23:17

sorry - still trying to catch up with thread, but this comment from MrSlant stuck out, "adjusts her venn diagram to include physics geeks who like pointy hounds and Terry Pratchett".

I'm not a physics geek, I'm a chemist geek - is that close enough? [bugrin]

TheCunnyFuntIsAGrittersFiancee · 31/03/2013 12:37

ECMO definitely rocks. David had less than 24 hours to live and the ECMO team saved his life, as soon as he got on the machine his heartrate went down from 148 to 89 [bushock]

I'm loving the irony of using these easter emoticons on a sighthound discussion [bugrin]

MagratGarlik · 31/03/2013 13:15

Agree with your comments about the NHS - completely undervalued imho. I used to live in another (European) country and I had to pay 120 euros per month for health insurance, but still had a 500 euro excess on my policy, so if I wanted to see my GP I still had to fork out 80 euros and if I wanted a repeat prescription that would cost me another 40 euros (till I'd reached my excess of 500 euros - which of course, unless you have major expenses you never actually reach). Getting rid of the NHS, as government after government seems to threaten to do, would not improve the quality of healthcare at all.

DS2 had various problems when he was younger and I have to say, whilst I didn't like the first paediatrician he had, they did give lots of support and specialist help was very forthcoming.

Cunny, hadn't thought about the irony of the Easter bunnies.... true though [bugrin]

Well, we passed the home check! The lady brought a hound with her who was adorable but not cat safe......so we got to see how nervous cat and bitey cat would react. Both were reasonably calm, but couldn't get too close for obvious reasons.

The cats were then put out of sight and the muzzle removed so we could see how dd got on. All was fine! They are happy to fnd us the right hound but I wish I had asked what happens when they find something suitable.....is it the norm that we could test drive the dog to see how the cats get on in closer proximity before we commit to anything??

Not daring to get my hopes up in case the mogs only like hounds at a distance and through conservatory windows.........

MagratGarlik · 31/03/2013 16:56

We don't have mogs, but when we got both our dogs, the rescues were very keen to make sure dogs/children all got on fine. We had lots of visits before either dog came home, took them for walks, had the children running and playing around the dogs to see whether it freaked the dogs out or not. We only committed when we were sure that we'd found dogs that both dogs and children were happy with. I'd imagine it's similar when looking for cat-friendly dogs.

Just think - you could soon have your very own hound!!!

MrSlant · 31/03/2013 21:22

Tries another inappropriate for pointy hounds [busmile]

YourHandInMyHand · 01/04/2013 19:34

Hi everyone Smile

I've posted before asking for advice on rescues who get in cat friendlies and it looks like Ive finally found the right match for our home. She will be coming soon on a one month trial and we are so excited!

Trying to stop myself getting carried away with the buying before she gets here but I need a coat for her right? Wink Will look at the links in the OP but are there any others anyone can recommend?

MagratGarlik · 01/04/2013 19:40

Oh, coats, now let me think....

This company called milgi coats seems to be pretty good. Try WWW.milgicoats.co.UK

We've had a couple from them and their service is very good [busmile].

MagratGarlik · 01/04/2013 19:42

What type of pointy are you getting?

CMOTDibbler · 01/04/2013 20:00

Yourhand - something you might want to consider is a stairgate for the kitchen so your cats can go over it, but pointy can't go through. This stops pointy eating the cats food, and gives the cats somewhere they can swear at dog feel safe but see the dog.

You will also need a martingale collar and a waterproof coat. We have a hi vis Blizzard one which helps see dog when he's running free

YourHandInMyHand · 01/04/2013 20:00

A GH girl, she's small rather than big but other than that just a standard greyhound. Smile

YourHandInMyHand · 01/04/2013 20:04

CMOT that's a great suggestion about keeping the kitchen a dog free zone. I was wondering where I would put the cat's food! Will a normal safety gate do as they won't bother jumping it, or would a bigger one be better? I've seen dogs jump the tall ones but I guess it depends on the dog. Grin

CMOTDibbler · 01/04/2013 20:13

Ours is just a standard one - I guess dog could jump it if he wished, but he isn't a jumper anyway and just stands there being pathetic.

Are you going to use a crate? We do, and it gives him a place thats his, and that I know where he is when he's left

YourHandInMyHand · 01/04/2013 20:40

I'm not sure about crating. I know a lot of people use them though. Will have to have a think about that option!

ZombiesAreClammyDodgers · 01/04/2013 20:50

Oh none of the above but would love to some day, don't care if a lurcher or a whippet or a grey :)

TheCunnyFuntIsAGrittersFiancee · 01/04/2013 20:58

Welcome YourHand, how exciting!! Wrt to coats, for now I think I'd just go for a cheap weatherproof coat from GRWE, or maybe the rescue she is coming from sells them? Our local one does. Then if she turns out to be the perfect dog for you then you can go for the all singing, all dancing one from AK creations, and a lovely snuggly housecoat from Milgi (fabulous quality, my hound has a milgi housecoat) [buwink]

Yy to a gate, we have 3 in our house as we have a toddler and they're incredibly useful for separating Sprocket and DD, and to stop her bugging him while he's eating. I think even when we don't need to stop DD getting up the stairs/into the kitchen we'll keep them for Sprocket!

Well done Eddie!! I really hope you get your hound soon, the waiting is the worst bit I think. We had our homecheck early November 2011, and didn't get Sprocket dog until 29th January!!

YourHandInMyHand · 01/04/2013 21:03

For now I need an outdoor walking coat and I want it to be waterproof so one with just fleece/flannel is out for now. I like my heating on warm so will get a house coat later. I quite like this one:

www.blizzardcoats.co.uk/blizzard-greyhound-coats/10-pink-greyhound-lurcher-blizzard-coat.html

The coats on Milgi are gorgeous! Are they made by a MNer?

Have emailed rescue to ask about sizes. Smile

TheCunnyFuntIsAGrittersFiancee · 01/04/2013 21:26

Wow, that is bright! You'll be seen a mile off [bugrin] The Milgi coats are lovely aren't they? My particular favourites are the lovely fresh green fleece, and the magic circles bandanas/walking out coats. The black model grey is my Sprockets big brother [busmile] Milgi is run by an MNer, no doubt she'll be along soon to say hello, she's a frequent poster on the cushion [busmile]

BehindLockNumberNine · 01/04/2013 21:31

The Milgi coats are fab. My beautiful whippety cross rescue houndie has a lovely bright blue fleece one and a matching blue star bandana.
Am hoping to buy him the magic circles or the blue star walking out coat next year....

TheCunnyFuntIsAGrittersFiancee · 01/04/2013 21:41

I love the magic circles one. I really do. I love bright, funky things. I think this will be Sprockets next collar.

YourHandInMyHand · 01/04/2013 21:42

I liked the Jade magic circles one best, will definitely be ordering it's more a case of how long I can resist for. [bugrin]

Yep the pink blizzard one is definitely bright! I think they have the same ones on the GRWE site, they are quite a good price for an outdoor coat.
