I had my name down with a breeder for a boy in August but she only had bitches and two boys in litter, I was 3rd on waiting list....Then I was waiting on a breeder who had had a pup returned after a few weeks as the owners 'could not commit' Confused, I mean wtf! Then after waiting a few weeks she decided pup would need an experienced owner. Ihave spent al my time since trawling rescue sites and applying for dogs that I want without success and looking for a new breeder with a pup ready NOW. It is totally exasperating. A breeder in Lewes had a liter with no yellow dogs. it is totally pissing me off tbh. I can see why people (of lesser characther Wink) resort to byb's and unethical breeders! I won;tdo that obvs but I am frustrated! Rant over

I've read your other threads. Your dog will come Smile, then you'll be posting on here going

Aaaaaaaaargh!!!!! Grin

LadyTurmoil · 22/10/2012 22:53

rach Clover is lovely too. Isn't it sad that there are such lovely dogs described as "leftover litter" All these have come from breeders - hundreds, no thousands of unwanted dogs, it's an absolutely ridiculous situation

LadyTurmoil · 22/10/2012 23:11

I know that they're not lab/retrievers type, but scroll down for Max and Lisa, they both look so sweet and both already in UK www.desperategreekies.com/adoption_4.html

It is LT.

I have a pup in foster her with me at the moment who has rickets an awful start at the hands of awful breeders.

We also took in 3 pedigree pups this week because their breeder couldn't sell them....

Yet people still breed.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 22/10/2012 23:33

I think you might find two labs would work well, OP - they will be great company for each other. We have a pedigree brown lab and a rescue lab-pointer cross, and they are great together.

HoneyDragon · 22/10/2012 23:36

Same ones that roll in dead seal SDTG? Wink

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 22/10/2012 23:38

Yup - the very same. Labs do have some truly disgusting habits, but I wouldn't be without them.

whistleingwaves - I would NEVER buy from gumtree or any other similar publication. I have looked at ads but they horrify me tbh. Some cannot even spell thenames of the dogs and you see they are advertising several breeds at the same address. No mention of Mum as she is probably festering in some Godforsaken concrete pit in Wales. Makes me so sad. I have no idea who you combat the relentless breeding of htese poor dogs either. I wish I knew how Sad

My dog was in the free ads. Woman said she'd never do it again as she had to reject people in droves. Sad

It's such a shame that getting a dog is like this, assuming people don't want to rescue or can't access a rescue (logistics etc for centres), they can research away, but puppy farmers and cash breeders are getting sneakier and sneakier.

With my pup, I contacted our absent friend for advice as everything seemed too good to be true. Between Vals advice and confirmation from a local rescue that they had heard of the woman, I went ahead.

I do feel a bit of a git though. The ops been looking and looking and I had a yellow Labrador puppy practically dropped on my doorstep Blush

Hey Angry

Can we please not assume that all dogs rehomed via free adverts, Gumtree, etc, go to bad homes or indeed come from them? Because Collie Dog came via a Gumtree advert, from a lovely cattle farmer who was breeding to get his next pair of working dogs, and most of the litter went to his neighbours as working dogs. Collie Dog is great, was brilliantly raised, we were thoroughly vetted, and he is really well cared for here too!

Yes, Gumtree has some bad people. So does the Kennel Club. Sad but true, some breeders just want the money, or the prestige, or both. Also, rescues are sadly not infallible and can rehome to bad people, who lie very well, or may make a mistake assessing a dog - I am giving one rescue the benefit of the doubt here, but they have made an awful lot of these mistakes tbh...

I advertised our puppies all over the place, vets, pet store, and yes Gumtree. All of the sensible applicants were the ones who found the advert on Gumtree, some after searching for the right dog for over two years. Only one had been looking for a short while - his dog had been PTS due to cancer the same day ours were born Sad His new puppy is the absolute centre of his life.

Yes, Gumtree also brought us some questionable types, but it is not difficult to tell someone that they cannot have a puppy if you deem them unsuitable. Free adverts are appealing to people who are selling as they are free, and to buyers as they can indeed look up the seller and search for similar adverts/evidence of dodgy stuff. That is what I did when searching for a pup, I knew I wanted a collie type and I narrowed down the list to those only advertising one litter, as opposed to several.

I did look into going to a recognised breeder, but was appalled by how many dogs they had bred over the years. And that their dogs were kept in outside pens when whelping and rearing, despite being part of the breeder's family...hmm, yes, family pets...

Seriously, please don't discount free ads. Just be sensible and visit unexpectedly about viewing puppies advertised. Find out how much the breeder has invested in this litter, vet bills, food, time, etc. Then calculate how much they are getting per puppy. Are they making more money than they put in? If yes, then walk away. If they won't produce proof of veterinary care, food bills, etc, then walk away. If they hide anything, then walk away. Puppies should never be profitable. Ever. Never ever, ever Sad

Sorry. Rant over. Shall go snuggle with Collie Dog who doesn't know he's been booked in to be neutered and not say anything else on this subject.

HoneyDragon · 23/10/2012 15:55

Rant away. As I said it's the deviousness that's the problem, not the advertising site itself. You see dodgy breeders on the specialist dog sites too as well as the free ads.

HoneyDragon · 23/10/2012 16:00

That sounded rude. I mean I share your rantiness, not your ranting is unjustified.

WTFwasthat · 23/10/2012 19:45

OMG!! I applied for Porridge and Many Tears have emailed meback asking me to ring further to my application! Does this mean I could be in with a chance? Or do they call everyone who applies? One problem is that the dog is in Wales and I am in Sussex. Wlll we really have to travel to bloody Camaerthan (sp?) to meet the dog?

OP posts:
rachmultiplemum · 23/10/2012 19:52

WTF- they will probably do a bit of a phone interview before arranging a home check.

Yes, you will need to travel, however for the right dog it is worth travelling miles :-)

WTFwasthat · 23/10/2012 20:12

so do you think I am on the first rung then? Grin

Floralnomad · 23/10/2012 21:18

It's not too far to Wales from Sussex . Good luck

LadyTurmoil · 23/10/2012 21:21

OOh how exciting! Sounds like you're in with a good chance if they contacted you, don't forget there's Pasta as well as Porridge. I think they usually want the whole family to visit before giving you the OK. Shame about other dogs but they often need homes where there is already one dog )MT ex-breeders as well) Does make it more difficult for first time owners though! Fingers crossed for you.

Lougle · 24/10/2012 06:48

Ooooh I'm so pleased. Porridge looks a lovely lad. If you do get him, please don't change his name!
